The Defiant: The Forsaken Trilogy Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 50 ratings

In this gripping conclusion to The Forsaken Trilogy,Alenna’s loyalties are put to a test of life and death.

Alenna Shawcross and the others who escaped the wheel are working toward an all-out assault on the United Northern Alliance. The plan is to dismantle it from the inside—and Alenna is one of the few people who can access the organization’s inner sanctum. But when she returns to the home she has nearly forgotten, she encounters old friends and is swept into a secret plan that puts everything she loves in danger.

Knowing what is at stake for her and her friends, Alenna ventures into the heart of the treacherous UNA. She’s determined to bring them down, because freedom is the only choice. Or is it?

“Reminiscent of both
The House of the Scorpion and The Hunger Games,” says VOYA, who recommends The Defiant if you “enjoy dystopian tales with a touch of science.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Forsaken presents a classic dystopian theme, with a corrupt government becoming overpowering and tyrannical, with the twist of science-fiction robotics and genetic manufacturing... Stasse has brilliantly combined two popular teen genres into a world of action and suspense that most teen readers will not want to put down." (VOYA on The Forsaken)

"In a genre that has been overwhelmed by a plethora of new titles, Stasse offers a fresh and unique contribution. Alenna is an immensely appealing protagonist; she is tough and resolute, and tolerates hardship in stride. The plot is carefully developed and a palpable sense of urgency propels the narrative forward. The novel is bursting with unique and imaginative STEM-based elements, which contribute to the eerie and sinister tone without being gratuitous. These unusual elements enhance the story and make the novel vivid and unforgettable." (VOYA June 2014)

Lisa M. Stasse was born on a farm in a small town in upstate New York. Bitten by the travel bug, she has since lived in twelve different states and four different countries. She graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Political Science and English literature, and is currently a digital librarian at UCLA. Lisa loves watching science fiction movies, cooking Spanish food, and dancing around her house to 80's music (when no one is watching). She lives in Santa Monica, California with her husband and their two-year-old daughter. All three of them are learning how to surf.

Karen at For What It's Worth and Mary at The Book Swarm occasionally post twitter-style reviews. Karen calls hers Short and Tweet, and I am going to borrow that review style here.

Fast paced, action packed conclusion. Aleena is stronger than ever & also put to the test. So many twists including betrayals. Somewhat HEA.
Okay, I will explain in a bit more detail my "somewhat HEA" since its the series conclusion. This is a story with an uprising, a story about trying to take control of a corrupt government. So yes, some people do die, a lot of no names on both sides in fact. And the country is pretty torn up after the decisions of leaders on both sides. But its hopeful, and it left me satisfied.

A great end to this trilogy. There is much loss, violence and death; Alenna, Gadya and Liam face horrific challenges. It's a fast-paced read with loads of action down to the last sentence. A perfect end to The Forsaken.
