Paw and Order: A Chet and Bernie Mystery (The Chet and Bernie Mystery Series Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,810 ratings

In the seventh installment in the brilliant New York Times bestselling mystery series, canine narrator Chet and PI Bernie Little journey to Washington, DC, and the dog-eat-dog world of our nation’s capital.

Stephen King has called Chet “a canine Sam Spade full of joie de vivre.” Robert B. Parker dubbed Spencer Quinn’s writing “major league prose.” Now the beloved team returns in another suspenseful novel that finds Chet sniffing around the capital city and using his street smarts to uncover a devilish plot.

Chet and Bernie pay a visit to Bernie’s girlfriend, Suzie Sanchez, an ace reporter living in far-off Washington, DC. She’s working on a big story she can’t talk about, but when her source, a mysterious Brit with possible intelligence connections, runs into trouble of the worst kind, Bernie suddenly finds himself under arrest.

Meanwhile Chet gets to know a powerful DC operative who may or may not have the goods on an ambitious politician. Soon Chet and Bernie are sucked into an international conspiracy, battling unfamiliar forces under the blinking red eyes of a strange bird that Chet notices from the get-go but seems to have slipped by everybody else. Most menacing of all is Barnum, a guinea pig with the fate of the nation in his tiny paws.

As Harry Truman famously quipped, “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.” Too bad he didn’t get to meet Chet!

Bernie and Chet books are a fantastic series of mystery novels starring Bernie a private detective, West Point grad and ex military and his dog, Chet, who is the narrator of the stories and maybe one of the best dogs in the world. The books are told from Chet's perspective, great plots plenty of humor great characters LOVE

You really have to love this series to put up with the corny titles — but I do love it.

This book takes Bernie and Chet to Washington DC where Suzy Sanchez, Bernie’s girlfriend, is working for the Washington Post. The cast of characters includes politicians, spies, “insiders,” and cops of course. Amazing things happen to Bernie and Chet, who are not at home in big cities.

Chet’s stream of consciousness is amusing, as always. But stories involving spies and politics don’t interest me as much as missing person cases and murders. So this isn’t my favorite book in the series. But I still enjoyed it — and look forward to the next book. I wouldn’t want to miss any developments in Bernie’s love life, or another great fight scene, or Chet’s opinions on food, human nature, and so forth.

This is the 7th book in the series featuring Chet (dog) and Bernie (human). Bernie is a private detective, and Chet is his assistant. All the books are narrated by Chet, which makes for some interesting reading. As a dog, he is sometimes not real focused: he doesn't count beyond two, for example. So he misses a lot that's going on or doesn't understand what he's seeing. On the other hand, he often senses things that Bernie misses. What I like most about the books is the humor. When Chet narrates, he often refers to other incidents, some of which the reader is familiar with, but some the reader would like to know more about. Often he’ll allude to a previous incident where he did something he shouldn’t have: “I paddled to shore, shook off, beads of water shooting everywhere, kind of like the pearls off Leda’s necklace when I—but forget that part—and sat beside Bernie” or “I remembered that day, a bad day—flunking out of K-9 school just before the leaping test, my very best thing! Was a cat involved? Blood? Those parts were pretty hazy. But a real good day, too, on account of that was when I got together with Bernie.”

These books are just great fun to read, and, while the earlier ones take place in the Southwest, this one takes the action to Washington, D.C. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

This whole delightful series is narrated in the first person by a dog, but done so humorously and naturally that you end up thinking, "Yup, that's exactly what a dog would be saying (or writing) if it had the ability." Several times it had me laughing out loud. I can't speak for Scents and Sensibility, the most recent book in the series, but have read the others. I can't recall specifically what each one contained in the way of violence or sex, but I didn't feel that the author had dwelt on anything violent in a way that seemed aimed at selling more copies of the book. No gruesome descriptions: Something happens, some person or the dog may get hit over the head, for instance, or the dog is kidnapped and has a scary experience, or you learn that someone has been killed, but the story moves right on to the detecting part. As for sex, there are no "sex scenes" to speak of. At most, the human detective that the dog considers to be his partner might happen to have his girlfriend stay over, but there are no seduction scenes, kissing, or bedroom details. Her visit is a very minor thing, if mentioned at all.

it is always a sad day when i finish the latest chet and bernie book, because now i have to wait a whole year to hang out with chet again. and this was one of the best ones yet, so i really dragged my feet as i neared the end.
as always, beautifully written, with a voice that is pure delight, as well as full of astute observations about people, slim jims, and the vast world of smells. my husband always knows when i'm reading a chet and bernie book because i'm laughing out loud so often. and also muttering in trepidation when things take a turn for the worse. if you like to read, appreciate excellent writing, a subtle and terrific sense of humor, and especially if you are partial to animals of any kind, including the human kind, do yourself a favor and read chet and bernie.

This is still a great book, but I don't love it as much as the others in the series. The 3star rating is in relation to other books in the series.

    ***HERE LIE SPOILERS***
Spencer Quinn goes to great lengths to keep reminding us that Chet is a dog. This has never been more clear than when you try to figure out a crime involving politics and international espionage spanning multiple countries. From the perspective of a dog that can only count to two... the best you can do is give up and dream of bacon and leave the so therefore to others.
But, I'm not Chet. I want to know who committed the crime and why.
However, even that I could forgive were it not for the emotional roller coaster that was the Guinea pig!
After a huge buildup, we only meet the pig I'm the last chapter and even then only get 20 words of interaction and zero contribution to the plot . Some of the best bits of Chet are his interactions with other creatures - remember Peanut and Brandon? - and I was really hoping for epic scenes with the Guinea pig.

Another fabulous story in the life of Chet. He loves life and is always feeling tip top. I love all the expressions-you can bet the ranch, take it to the bank, out the ying yang etc. It can get a tiny bit repetitive. I think I loved the stories of princess and peanut more.
