Kaleidoscopes & Quilts Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 58 ratings

Kaleidoscope - the very word promises surprise and magic, chance and change. Exploding with visual excitement, a kaleidoscope design organizes an abundance of light, color, form, and motion into a complex and coherent image, capturing a moment of infinity. This book is jammed with how-to's and why-not's, process and product, and an abundance of text and photos that explains elements of design and technique for creating the multifaceted, luminous, and random nature of a kaleidoscope's interior on the flat surface of a quilt.

The kaleidoscope configuration and its symmetrical repetition allows the quiltmaker to explore a variety of design possibilities using intricately printed fabric. With Paula as your guide, you will find that making kaleidoscope quilts is like making magic with fabric.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Anyone interested in color, pattern, and design--even those who aren't quilters--will be fascinated by Kaleidoscopes & Quilts. Paula Nadelstern, who confesses to being "mesmerized by the irregular order that emerges in a haphazard pile of fabric," creates astonishing, luminous quilts inspired by the kaleidoscope. The 20-page gallery of quilts shows off her creations superbly: against glossy black pages, the jeweled colors, intricate patterns, and stained-glass brilliance of these quilts positively sparkle. Keep in mind that this is not a step-by-step introduction for the novice; previous quilting experience is presumed. But the coverage of all of the technicalities of this specialized technique--from figuring the pattern angles to planning, cutting, and arranging the design--is clear and extensive. A final, brief photo section salutes the item that started it all, the kaleidoscope itself.

From Library Journal

The kaleidoscope was invented in 1816 by Sir Davis Brewster and was originally intended as a design tool for artists, though it later attained wider use as a children's toy. Nadelstern has used the kaleidoscope as a take-off point for the breathtakingly gorgeous quilts featured in this book. This is a personal book dedicated to one purpose: teaching techniques for making kaleidoscope quilts that the author had to learn through trial and error. If, along the way, that same reader is entertained by Nadelstern's wit, so much the better. Recommended for all textile collections.

I have four of Paula Nadelstern's books and this one is by far my favorite. The variety of the kaleidoscopes shown in this book are amazing. Although I love all of Nadelstern's work, these represent a completely different palette of fabrics (since here more recent books show works that are largely done from fabrics of her own designs). This book really inspires you to look at fabric in a new way and to create using wedges of different sizes within the same quilt composition. It really inspires you to combine geometric, novelty, batik and traditional fabrics and to view them from different angles. In many of the works displayed, the backgrounds are integral to the design and not just a kaleidoscope against a constant background. I bought my copy used and couldn't be more pleased by the condition of it. (I must admit, it's not in as good shape now that I've been reading it so often!) Well worth the purchase even at full price!

I was looking for a challenge; and this is definitely that. It is fascinating to study Paula's kaleidoscopes and discover the different fabrics she used in each triangle. Her instructions are excellent; very detailed. I learn something new each time I read it. It is definitely challenging to find the fabrics, decide which ones flow together by motif or color, and to decide the shapes of the pieces for each fabric you use. I am very happy to have this book.

This book is driving me crazy, but in a good way. I keep picking it up and looking through it and being wowed. On the other hand, it is - I think - a very challenging technique to actually do.

I am a kaleidoscope quilt fanatic, and Paula's book is very understandable. It was well worth my investment... and has caused me to go through a lot of fabric. This I rate as a couple of bobbins for not-quite-a-beginner-quilter's book; but. The designs and tips are doable and you will get hooked too.

I am a quilter from way back and I have not seen the likes of this book since. I still can't put it down as I am constantly awed by the beauty of such quilts and best of all they aren't all that hard to make. This is my favorite book for intermediate quilters and advance.
