The Nightmare Dilemma (Arkwell Academy Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 95 ratings

The thrilling fantastical mystery series, Arkwell Academy, from YA author Mindee Arnett continues in The Nightmare Dilemma.

Dusty Everhart might be able to predict the future through the dreams of her crush, Eli Booker, but that doesn't make her life even remotely easy. When one of her mermaid friends is viciously assaulted and left for dead, and the school's jokester, Lance Rathbone, is accused of the crime, Dusty's as shocked as everybody else. Lance needs Dusty to prove his innocence by finding the real attacker, but that's easier asked than done. Eli's dreams are no help, more nightmares than prophecies.

To make matters worse, Dusty's ex-boyfriend has just been acquitted of conspiracy and is now back at school, reminding Dusty of why she fell for him in the first place. The Magi Senate needs Dusty to get close to him, to discover his real motives. But this order infuriates Eli, who has started his own campaign for Dusty's heart.
As Dusty takes on both cases, she begins to suspect they're connected to something bigger. And there's something very wrong with Eli's dreams, signs that point to a darker plot than they could have ever imagined.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—In this follow-up to The Nightmare Affair (Tor Teen, 2013), Dusty Everhart returns for a new school year at Arkwell Academy for Magickind, and it feels like just about everything in her life is confusing and difficult. Her biggest problem is finding out who attacked her friend, the mermaid Britney Shell. Dusty is also falling for her classmate Eli, complicated by the return of her ex-boyfriend Paul. On top of all that, there is the mysterious secrecy of her roommate, Selene. Arnett's novel is well plotted and paced, carrying the reader forward into the ongoing mystery of the unknowable TerraTribe and the impending threat at the Beltane festival. The growing romance between the Nightmare Dusty and the Dreamseer Eli makes their friendship more difficult—and it doesn't help that every night when Eli falls asleep, Dusty has to climb on top of him to enter his dreams. The story and setting are original, and the magical boarding school is impressive for its differences from other famous wizarding academies. Teens looking for supernatural relationships will find much to like here, even if the characters are underdeveloped. This series will keep readers returning for more, with its punchy dialogue and steamy romances.—Pete Smith, Pioneer Valley Performing Arts CPS, South Hadley, MA

From Booklist

In this sequel to The Nightmare Affair (2013), tensions between the naturekind, darkkind, and witchkind at a high school for supernaturals continue to intensify—as does the star-crossed relationship between half-breed Nightmare Dusty and hunky Eli, a supposed “ordinary.” Here the near murder of a schoolmate puts the two amateur detectives onto the track of an ugly scheme to send the magickind government off track. Though the book is waaaay too dependent on urgent but inscrutable dreams and messages, and characters refusing to reveal motives or feelings as tricks for heightening suspense, the racial conflict adds a thought-provoking theme to this steamy paranormal romance thriller. Grades 6-9. --John Peters

i feel like maybe 5 stars is a little overrated...but amazon says that's "i love it" and i really did love it. the heroine can get on my nerves a bit but i think she's gaining some maturity as she goes through the story which is good character development and also helps me to like her more. there's an interesting twist with the two main characters which makes me excited for the next book. as with the first, i thought the background/world building was very clever. fun read and much recommended.

The sophomore curse is avoided in this entertaining sequel to The Nightmare Affair.

Dusty, Eli and Selena create the “Dream Team” which kinda reminds me of the Scooby team from my Buffy the Vampire Slayer watching days. When Britney a mermaid is attacked on school grounds Dusty is asked to dream walk with her to see what happened. What she finds is not what she expected and so she keeps it to herself.

To make matters even worse Lady Elaine asks that Dusty get close to her ex-boyfriend Paul again. As he is now back at school, even though in the previous book he was incohots with the Red Warlock. Her keeping an eye on Paul does interfer with her and Eli’s budding relationship. As does him sending mix singals.

Dusty is growing in her powers and in her confidence of herself. This book shows that growth which is entertaining to read. She is still as sassy as she was but now she is letting her sassiness show more. Selena is a great balance to Dusty. Selena is keeping a secret from her bestie though, a secret that needs to be shared. Her friendship and trust in Eli does take a hit in this book.

There is tension between the two- relationship tension. Eli keeps sending out mix messages- one second he is into her and the next he is not. This does cause Dusty to become a little boy crazy, but ultimately the mission she has been assigned does prevail. Eli’s indeference is explained later in the book and boy is the explaintion a dozy.

The Nightmare Dilemma is a fun read that allows you to escape your reality for a bit of time. I do recommend that you read the first book The Nightmare Affair before you tackle this one, as this is the sequel in the series.

The second book is awesome but really frustrating. There is a lot of moments where your just like,"no, don't do that" "STAPH. YOU REALLY DONT WANNA DO THAT" "*face palm times 22*" and then the characters are like "maybe we shouldn't have done that" and I'm just over here like 😑

I like this author. The story is well written. The narrator does a good job, I just am not a huge fan of her voice.

It has been 2-3 years since I've read the 1st book of this series. I don't know why I never continued, I guess I just never felt like it. Even though it's been awhile I still remember a good amount of what happened in the 1st book so I wasn't very confused reading this. I liked being back in this world, it's very fun. Dusty is great and Eli is pretty ok. I like that their mystery service is called the "Dream Team"- very cute! I think overall this is just an ok, fun series. Not my favorite, but enjoyable. I look forward to the next and last book. I also really like the covers and am happy they all match!

I didn't read the first book, so I was a somewhat of a disadvantage reading The Nightmare Dilemma. There was enough information for me to follow the story, but I was a bit perplexed at the very opening when Dusty is so rebellious that she isn't trying to help a friend who has been attacked. Not having read Nightmare Affair, I wasn't sure if there was a reason for her reluctance, or if she was just being immature. Throughout the book, her rebellious nature is often reactive, but as she is a younger teen, I felt it was the appropriate maturity level. However, I sometimes had to rationalize myself through my annoyance. I did like how her character could own up to her shortcomings and how her friends could call her on it. Eli was also typically male reactive in his responses to Dusty and Paul. It was interesting to see that Paul, despite being the bad guy, seemed more mature than the others. The story itself was engaging with a lot of grey areas and unknowns adding to the mystery, and takes a political turn into something much bigger than just the school. It was great seeing how Dusty and her friends had to work together and create alliances. I think Nightmare Dilemma is a terrific book for the younger teen audience as it depicts some of the harder realities of the world that they will just be discovering in their own lives.

It was entertaining. Not as enthrall in gas the first book, but i still read it in one night. I'm drawn more to the characters than to the world Miss. Arnett has created. If she could expand on the world a little bit more in the next book while still maintaining her characters, she'll knock it out of the park.

Dusty and Eli are a team when it comes to dreams and investigating. But unfortunately for Dusty, they’re still not more than friends. Eli leads her on a bit until he finally comes clean about why he can’t date her. Meanwhile, Dusty’s former boyfriend comes back into the picture to stir things up. And Dusty has to stick close to him in order to learn who’s behind some recent attacks.

The Nightmare Dilemma is the second installment in the Arkwell Academy series. This YA, dark fantasy series is now a must-read for me. The characters are vivid and engaging. The setting is a school of magical creatures with a twist. And story is a captivating mystery with an overlying arc that kept me wanting more. I hope to see many more in this series as well as others from this talented, newly-published author.
