"It was my pleasure to read this book and verify technical details for Carolyn, without spoiling the story. If you're a fan of magic and/or Las Vegas, you'll enjoy this book."
-
Johnny Thompson, magician and consultant, "Penn & Teller: Fool Us"

"The author highlights the flawed character of the protagonist who has everything in life but still indulges in bizarre and gory rituals with the belief that it will make him even more successful and will give him great riches. An unputdownable rollercoaster crime mystery that mimics the initial scene of the book which is a grand rollercoaster magical stunt that goes horribly awry and is the main trigger for the whole story. Once you start reading it, you are engulfed in the story and you don't stand a chance of stopping."
-
International Review of Books

"Sleight of hand abounds in this captivating murder mystery played out beneath the glittering lights of Las Vegas. Like a talented Vegas juggler, Hamilton does an impressive job of economically fleshing out her protagonist's character, weaving an intricate plot while never retarding pace, and keeping readers guessing not only about who's really the killer but also about what's really going on. In essence, this book is an enjoyable read from a writer particularly skilled in the art of entertainment."
- US Review of Books

"C.V. Hamilton appears to well know the milieu of the Vegas entertainment industry, magic shows, and how to craft the special overlay of a murder mystery set in this environment. Her attention to weaving humor into the story of two savvy investigators who interact with a host of other characters with their own special interests creates a vivid murder mystery with many satisfying twists and turns."
- Midwest Book Review

"The secrets revealed aren't always apparent, to even the seasoned mystery
reader, which makes
Magicide stand out from more predictable stories. Tight writing keeps readers both thoroughly engaged and happily off-balance about evolving relationships, motivations, and underlying angst. Anyone who has been to Vegas or seen a magic show will be especially captivated by the realistic backdrops of both environments, and will find Magicide an engrossing mystery of discovery and deadly truths."
- Recommended Reading, Donovan's Bookshelf

"A mystery, a thriller, a truly magical experience. The reader is immersed in the revealing world of magic, the life of the famous Las Vegas showgirls and performers, and the twists and turns of this case. We meet the ex-wife, son, friends and lovers, and other magicians who had reason to both hate and love Maxwell. Carolyn V. Hamilton has written Magicide with the perfect amount of intrigue. I became hooked from the very beginning and while several times I thought I had the case solved there was always a bump that proved me wrong. The ending left me with my mouth open in surprise. Magicide must be read by all want-to-be, wonder-how, wish I could be a magician readers, as well as by those who love a really good mystery, thriller, suspense story. Hamilton has written a sure winner and Magicide is a must-read."

Readers' Favorite review

"A complicated web of personal relationships in the life and death of Maxwell Beacham-Jones, a magician with a knack for conjuring enemies. I enjoyed Carolyn V. Hamilton's fast-paced mystery. Personal knowledge of the lives of Las Vegas performers paints every scene with the brush of realism, adding layers to the story. A fun and intriguing read! Just when you think you finally understand what's going on--PRESTO-CHANGE-O!"

Storytelling is my life...

well, maybe not completely...but I do love what I do, and I think that makes all the difference!

After a long career in marketing, graphic design & public relations—the real world of "Mad Men"—I joined the U.S. Peace Corps. In Suriname, South America, I lived for one year in an indigenous village on the northeast corner of the Amazon basin.

I admit to spending long hours in my hammock reading lots of paperback books other volunteers had left behind. Tons of storytelling inspiration.

In Suriname I learned the history of Elisabeth Samson, the first black woman in the 18th century Dutch colony to get legal permission from the government to marry white, inspiring my historical fiction, "Elisabeth Samson, Forbidden Bride."

And I was off and writing...memoirs, a book on art journaling, 4 adult coloring books (one of my other passions), non-fiction books for writers, and more novels.

If you would like to know more about memoir writing, you can visit my webpage, carolynvhamilton.com, where I blog periodically.

And please consider popping over to Facebook and joining our active group, Aspiring Memoir Writers.

On the personal note, yes it's true that In 2012 I emigrated from the United States to Cuenca, Ecuador, way up in the Andes. I love to travel and return periodically to Seattle to visit family and shop at Costco and Chico's.

Author Carolyn V. Hamilton moves around, from her home in Cuenca, Ecuador, South America, Las Vegas, Nevada and Seattle, Washington, and in doing so she absorbs the energy in each location and transforms those experiences into novels. Her `pre-writing' career was in advertising, marketing, graphic design & public relations, service in the US Peace Corps, volunteering in Suriname to teach rural community development in an Amerindian village. Now writing fulltime, she serves as Editor & Chief Adventuress for the digital magazine adventuress-travel-magazine.com, and has published five books, one of which is a memoir of her life in the 1970s while living in Las Vegas - a book that adds credibility to this current novel MAGICIDE in atmosphere, the jargon of Las Vegas, and the allure of the shows there that draw entertainment hungry visitors from all over the world.

Flavor is the magic Carolyn adds to her writing, no matter the subject, but in this novel MAGICIDE she dips right into the secrets of the plot to come with her opening paragraphs: `Her hands tight on the wheel, Larissa Beacham-Jones maneuvered her Mercedes into the valet parking line at Las Vegas' Dunes Park Resort & Casino. With one hand she nervously brushed aside the long blond strand she'd purposefully left separated from her coifed French twist. Her son, Peter, leaned forward in the passenger seat to stare through the windshield upward to where the steel track of the Heldorado Hypercoaster, the world's tallest and fastest roller coaster, dipped down to pass through the porte cochère and startle arriving guests. Three stories higher, the electric marquis flashed, "MAXWELL PERFORMS DEATH-DEFYING ROLLER COASTER ESCAPE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT." "I hate bloody roller coasters," Larissa muttered. Her nervousness made her native British accent more pronounced and haughty. Peter sighed. "I know. Your father forced you to ride that Rolly Polly when you were five." "And when I threw up he laughed. And tonight the world's most famous magician, Maxwell Beacham-Jones--" Sarcasm laced Larissa's pronouncement of her ex-husband's name - "will be handcuffed and chained to the track, with seconds to escape those speeding Hypercoaster cars." Characters have thus been painted instead of just sketched and the core of the story is dangled before our eyes.

The author's synopsis gels her plot well: `Maxwell Beacham-Jones, the world's most famous magician, has reached the zenith of his success. Now he's planned the most daring, outrageous trick of his career. But when Maxwell dies in a Las Vegas roller coaster escape stunt before a national television audience, it's no accident. He was hated by his contemporaries, and all of the suspects are magicians--with plenty of secret motives for murder. MAGICIDE introduces Las Vegas Metro Police detective and single mom, Cheri Raymer, and her vegetarian partner, Tony Pizzarelli. Together they follow a trail through the world of magic and show business that leads to intrigue and shocking revelations. Raymer will face the most devastating personal threat in her career when her teen-aged son, Tom, fascinated by magic, becomes the protégé of a suspected killer.'

MAGICIDE is a most apropos title for this mystery and Carolyn's handing of both the questionable death vs. murder by the magician's detective ex-wife invites us into family secrets and fascinating turns of events that should satisfy even the most critical mystery/thriller lovers. This a very well written, very exciting book. Grady Harp, July 15

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this book. I had it on my Kindle for awhile and had not opened it to read; I wish I had sooner. The opening is good at engaging the reader but really takes reading a little into it as the author starts making hints at secrets that you really get hooked, asking yourself, 'What is going on?' in a good way.

I did guess 2 of the secrets but I'm one that even if I guess it and think I'm right, I still con't to read to make sure that I am. I wants to see how the author reveals it to the reader. However, if you are one that doesn't like to be able to predict the ending, you might not like this one too much. However, if you give it a try, I think you'll like the author's unique plot. I'm not sure I've read anything quite like this one.

A wonderful, entertaining, hilarious at times thriller. Carolyn Hamilton has written what I consider to be a real roller coaster ride, most of the main characters are magicians they will enthrall you as they go about their everyday lives.

Detective Cheri Raymer, is the main character, but there are several other authentic characters that help make this at first, seemingly impossible, plot work. There are several side stories that moves the whole novel along before it culminates in a stunning twist which I feel you as the reader will appreciate. It is the ultimate twist in the tail.
The novel is based in Las Vegas, and Carolyn Hamilton the author of Magicide has gone into great detail to quantify several stunts that magicians could and probably have carried out in Las Vegas.

I would recommend the reading of Magicide as it is a well paced, unique thriller. I could not put it down. It grabs you from the first page and continues till you reach that ending that will stay in your mind for a long time to come.

Like many people, I've always enjoyed magicians display their talents: from my cousin the amateur to a variety of professional performers on stage, television, and film*.

This book told an interesting story of a Las Vegas performer and the cast of supporting characters. The background was a bit shallow, as if everyone knew what Las Vegas life was all about, but the characters were pretty solid. I highly recommend this book.

    * Go see The Prestige for a good film; stars Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson and Michael Caine. Another film to see if you can find it is the 1950s Houdini, starring Tony Curtis.

Rivals battle and vie for media attention. Those who protect—or should protect—in the name of family or friendship are abandoned in the quest for fame and fortune. When the greatest magician of all, Maxwell Beacham-Jones is killed while performing an escape from a speeding roller coaster, all bets are off the table. No one is left untouched. The search for the killer only uproots secrets that threaten to destroy the most innocent. Magicide is a fair read for someone seeking mystery and mayhem.

If you love magic as much as I do, you're going to love this book! It takes you behind the scenes and shows you just enough to be enticed but not so much that it gives away all the secrets. After a magic escape trick goes horribly wrong, every magician in Las Vegas is a suspect, along with their families and friends. It's a great mystery with lots of plot lines and twists and turns. Highly recommended! I was given a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review and hope it is helpful to both the reader and the writer.

Reviewed in Canada on July 18, 2015
Combine magic and homicide and voila, you’ve got the aptly named book Magicide by Carolyn V. Hamilton. Set the magic and mayhem against the backdrop of Sin City and you’ve got a high-octane mystery that’s got you at page one and doesn’t let you go until the very last page has been read. Magicide starts with a highly-publicized – and very dangerous – roller coaster escape stunt by the world famous Maxwell Beacham-Jones; a stunt that goes horribly wrong, ending in the death of the famed magician along with six others riding the roller coaster, as the entire country watches in horror. Seasoned Las Vegas detective Cheri Raymer is sitting in the stands with her teenaged son, a fledgling magician, watching in disbelief as the tragedy unfolds. Much like the roller coaster stunt she’s describing, author Hamilton, does a great job sucking the reader in, building the suspense in such a way that the reader is powerless to stop reading. In a city known for its action and over-the-top entertainment, Hamilton’s protagonist, Cheri Raymer is about as ordinary as they come – just another mom dealing with a willfull teenage son – while trying to solve the murder of a man whose list of enemies appears to be longer than his list of successful stunts. A highly enjoyable read!
