4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 407 ratings

Narashtovik has been saved—but Dante and Blays' friendship has been destroyed.

Blaming the Gaskan king for the loss of his love, Lira, Blays infiltrates the enemy nobility. There, he schemes to bankrupt Gask and drive its ruler from the throne. But Dante's been waiting for Blays' return. If he finds and exposes him, Blays will be executed as a spy.

As they squabble, strange lights shine in the east. Harbingers of a long-forgotten threat. If the signs go ignored, Narashtovik will be annihilated by an enemy it never knew it had.

In preparation for this book, I reread the other two novels and what a ride I have been on. Each one brings the reader deeper into the world of Dante and Blays, each one adds new dimensions to the characters' creative relationships, and all of the books are a true joy to travel through.

In relationship Robertson's other two novels, I feel that The Black Star is the most mature in the trilogy. The fun banter between our heroes is nonsexist as they don't even see each other for much of the book. Not to say that there is no comedy in the book, but it is a clear departure from the first two. Now, where the jokes and verbal repartee is lacking, the novel makes up for it with moral, spiritual, and emotional depth that the first two take only glancing blows at.

As I have mentioned before, I reread the first two novels before embarking on this final road, and the conclusion I have come to is that Roberton has taken his readers on the classic heroes saga, complete with Campbell's heroic stages.

Dante has traversed from a character who justifies his murderous acts with mental and verbal gymnastics, to someone who weighs the deaths he is forced to commit with the social and moral implications that they result in.

Blays likewise grew in wisdom and character from hired street tuff, powerful sidekick, to master schemer and without a doubt the character with the most acute moral compass.

The trilogy is a fantastic work of fantasy and great character writing. While the ending of the novel is practically perfect in every way, I am sad that I will not be able to join with these adventures anymore. However, they will live on in my mind; and I hope, that that stands as the greatest compliment that I can pay to this wonderful and gifted writer.

:-) I would give this book five stars but for the foul language. I don't know why authors start out with the first book with hardly any bad language-if any, then as the stories progress deem it necessary to add more and more and more of it! Great story, plenty of action. Fun and drama. Just wish the swearing was eliminated!

I have just completed the "Cycle of Awarn trilogy. It was AWESOME!!!!!!! I loved this trilogy!! I'm hoping you make it into a series & don't just place these characters on a shelf. In your writing you have brought these characters to such lively personas that I've become invested in them! It's like becoming hooked on a reality show! :) I ( & I can only speculate but I'm sure your other readers as well...) care about these characters & their lives/stories. After reading the first book in the trilogy: the WhiteTree, I was hooked "hook, line & sinker"! I couldn't get to the next book fast enough! I didn't even stop to write a review of The White Tree before moving on! Lol...shame on me!! :) but again,in my defense, :) that's what happens when the story gets you excited about its characters & the storyline. It's bloody awesome!! :)
I love the 2 main characters Dante & Blays! I love the way they meet & then strike up this friendship that will stand the test of time. I tend to be one of those readers where I don't like to lose characters (by death) but I also understand that in order to make it real & not just lala land that you (the writer) have to be realistic & people die when they are a part of such life & death situations! But I do not like it when any of my main characters die! :°°°( it makes me super sad & I don't pay money to be made to feel sad! Again, I understand the reasoning but ....
I'm not going to say more than that because I don't like it when people write spoilers in their review. I will say this tho life (in reality) can be so sad & I think that's why I love fantasy genre because we all deserve a little magic in our lives! Hint! Hint!! :) These books give you it all! Thank goodness! Because believe me when I say that these books are really good! I'm one of those readers that if it stinks or if you make me super sad or the writing is just so-so then I may finish that book but as far as the series goes...I'm done! There are just too many really good writers out there to waste my time.
I think for me it always comes down to how well the characters are built& evolve over the series as well as the storyline. I love the intrigue in this storyline & I love the little details that make the story different & unique for example the game the entourage must learn to play. I think anytime you can introduce a new "type" of character that hasn't been written about before is really creative on the writers side. I mean there are millions of stories out there so a new concept is pretty cool & entertaining! I think that's what I love so much about the books, I was entertained! I was taken to this other world & just kind of became lost within the story. That's my kind of story! That's my kind of book! That's my kind of writer!!

Awesome wrap up for the trilogy. I personally think the Great Rift was better in terms of a buddy-cop feel between the Dante and Blays, but this book has them seperated for the bulk of the story and for the first time you experience the world through Blays and he's just hilarious. You also see that without his not so subtle tempering of Dante that he really is like borderline psychotic and doesnt value much above his own needs (made even better by the fact that he's touted as the best healer in the known world, and will straight up let someone bleed to death from a gut wound if saving them doesnt help him.)
Great read. Couldn't put it down.

Ill probably buy the other Cycle of titles in a collection some time next month.

The trilogy is worth starting and finishing. It is big and takes time but is well written and the story is really good. Enjoy

After three books I've grown used to Mr. Robertson's writing style, so this book was the easiest to read. I still found words spelled wrong, confusing punctuation and sentences that were too long or too choppy. The story itself was wonderful and the characters are delightful. They have become my friends and I can't wait to see what they do next. I hated this was the last book I would see them in....but, to my surprise, I found others felt the same way. Thank you, Mr. Robertson, for indulging us by writing another series with the further adventures of Dante and Blays.

As it says in the title of this review "Got to get to the end" Why ? Because it's a great story and any reader will tell you they need to get to the last page, the most important page in any book. Having said that it's just a very good read and temps me to look at your other books. THANK YOU.

well written, brilliant characters, superb storyline, which is unlike previous reads of the same genre, fantasy can tend to be the same sort of story written over and over, but this one is very new and refreshing, would definately recommend, it has war, intrigue, love, everything!! so would appeal to a lot of people

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good trilogy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 5, 2014
An excellent end to an excellent trilogy. It must be said that the first book is a bit 'unpolished' compared to the subsequent two volumes. Nevertheless, stick with it and you'll be rewarded with a very good fantasy trilogy.
