Frank wrote his first story—it was a western—when he was five. It was really awful, as might be expected, but his mother kept that typed and spell-checked short story tucked away until the day she died.

Later, Frank became a newspaper reporter, thinking that books are written by authors which he most assuredly was not. He kept trying to write though, and eventually did it wrong enough to learn how to get it right. That first sale, a young adult novel published by Independence Press, was more than thirty years and a good many books ago.

As a journalist, the Colorado Press Association awarded Frank their highest award, the Sweepstakes Award, for the best news story of 1980, and the Western Writers of America has twice named Frank recipient of their prestigious Spur Award. Frank passed away at age 73 in December 2015.

Mr Roderus' three-book set hardly needs the benefit of my opinion but, for what it may be worth to others considering whether or not to invest time with this author's work, I go on record to say I truly enjoyed the entire set and intend eventually to read lots more of this man's work. Journey to Utah as well as The Herdsman were outstanding (Charlie and the Sir is strongly touted in other reviews so I'll leave it alone here). Strong, moral heroes and heroins. Minimal profanity and then only in an understandable context. Loved the story lines along with all the clever and well conceived twists. Great good guys - wonderful bad guys! Roderus, especially in The Herdsman, painted most of a grand canvass then deliberately left just enough for the readers imagination to fill in several choice portions. This touch was nicely done and did not in any way detract from my overall appreciation of the book, in fact, it served to enhance everything about the story and its characters.

His books are fast moving without the extra details that so many authors seem to think they need to make a good story long. His hero is usually a good guy with some flaws, but not a superman.

All 3 were good reading but "Charles the Sir" & The Herdsman were the best. Charles the Sir was a man from England who hired Charles to help
him with his sister ranch. Her husband had been killed. The adorning rancher wanted buy the sisters ranch but she would not sell. Won't tell anymore about the story.. It will hold your attention.

The Herdsman is about Jude Priest, who worked alone, he as hired to look after some sheep in Wyoming cattle country. there was trouble with
the cattle ranchers and the sheep that Priest was staking care of. Lots of troy;blue for Priest.

Each of the books had heart warming stories where you learned about the hardships of the old west. I( love the way Roderus develops the relationships between his characters. The love that develops between his main characters is not of sexual content but the reader can't wait to see them get married. He is a masterful story teller and he writes as if you were back in the old west. When I finished the first book I couldn't wait to start the second. I like how Roderus continues to include characters from his previous book.. Even though they are secondary characters in the story it is nice for the reader to see how their loved has developed through time. His development of the plot is easy to follow.I hated to see the last book end. I enjoy Roderus's style of writing. They are true love stories but without a lot of explicit sex. What a great read!!!!!

Frank Roderus has always been among my top five western author's, and I think I would rate him right alongside Louis L'amour as a great story teller. His main characters are generally everyday folks caught up in interesting situations, and Roderus does an amazing job of pulling you into the story. His stories usually, but not always, have some comedic relief when things become too serious. I have had a hard time finding new Roderus books, but thankfully these three were new to me and just as excellent as I expected.

Now the bad. Amazon appears to have created this Kindle book by scanning old paper books and using optical character recognition (OCR) to get the books into electronic format. No OCR is perfect, and the one used here is at best average. Words are misspelled, missing, or the wrong word instead of the one obviously intended by the author (e.g., scared instead of scarce). Amazon obviously did no editing at all! The OCR mistakes are a little distracting but not enough to affect my pleasure in reading these three books, and I would buy this Kindle version again.

Good reading except for the herdsman. So many misspelled words it was a very irritating read. I do like Roderus though. I don't know whose is responsible for all the mistakes in that book, but more proof reading is needed.

Frank Roderus writes great stories! This box set includes Journey to Utah, Charlie and the Sir, and The Herdsman. These read like golden era western classics! The dialect, the details and the dust are all authentic and make the action, suspense and characters come to life. I can’t get enough! Highly recommended 5-stars.
