"This was beautifully detailed with an almost cinematic quality. [...] a fabulous blend of adventure, romance, suspense, action, and erotica - it bends genres and keeps the reader on their toes."--The Smutsonian
About the Author
Artist, Writer, Dog Lover - http: //www.beydeckard.com
Canadian indie author Bey Deckard wanted to be many things when he grew up: veterinarian, vampire, paleontologist, crane operator, sniper, ophthalmologist, brain surgeon, marine biologist, lawyer, forensic anthropologist, set designer, underwater archaeologist, mortician, rock star, philanthropist... but writer was not on the list. Artist wasn't there either because he'd been drawing and paintings since he was a tot and figured that made him one already.
Freelance graphic design paid the bills while Bey levelled up with a BFA in Art History (minor in Anthro). However, he landed in the tech world where the degree was worth FA, and stayed there for over a decade before leaving, thoroughly sick of working for The Man. That's when the writing started, and Bey still can't believe it wasn't on that list above because he absolutely loves doing it and can't really imagine doing anything else.
Bey's books aren't quite romance and aren't quite erotica, and they jump from genre to genre, but they're all character driven and he likes to think they're interesting.
These days, if Bey's not writing or working on graphics, you'll find him posting pics of his best buddy and constant canine companion Murphy, cooking up some tasty vegetarian eats, hanging out on facebook, or sitting back to watch a movie with a drink (or many).
As a reader, Bey's usual staples are biographical works, medical research papers, all sorts of history books (nautical, medieval, and medical being his favourites), science fiction, fantasy, horror, KGB/CIA thrillers, and graphic novels.

Bey Deckard has created a lavishly rich world full of sailing ships, grand adventures and a little bit of kink to heat things up.
There is so much to love about Caged and the most notable that stick out in my mind are its three main characters. Jon, Captain Baltsaros and Tom.
Young Jon lives a sheltered life beholden to his stepfather. Jon has the unique talent of being an empath and his stepfather uses that talent over and over to keep his tiny town safe - and Jon under his thumb. When Jon gets sent to the local tavern on an errand he ends up being kidnapped by Captain Baltsaros.
The narrator, Michael Ferraiuolo, is a new narrator to me and I can say for certain that he’s snared another fan.
Ferraiuolo captures each character so distinctly it’s absolutely amazing to hear him perform!
I am completely smitten with his voice for Tom. As I finished a chapter with “Tom’s” voice I went back and listened to it again. Michael’s accent for Tom is perfect and embodies each of his characteristics, bringing Tom to life. I could catch all of the different inflections in his voice...when Tom is mocking Jon you can even hear the humor. And Tom’s interactions with Baltsaros are titillating, edgy and kept me wanting more.
The thing I appreciate most about Baltsaros is that he’s got layers. There’s an air of mystery and secrecy that surrounds him and the longer Jon is with him the more he comes under that power. I love hearing Jon flourish and stumble under the Captain’s attentive eye and he really grows as a man and a character. The listener is always left wondering just who Captain Baltsaros really is. What drives him to do the things he does and what his reasons are.
It takes a skilled narrator to capture a character and, in my eyes, Michael Ferraiuolo did just that with his portrayal of Captain Baltsaros; displaying his very essence.
The Captain has an inner confidence and skill and is also a very sexual man. Listening to Michael speak as the Captain made me feel like I was actually on board Baal’s Heart with the crew. Baltsaros’ interactions with Jon are at times deeply sensual and I could hear that tone throughout Ferraiulo’s narration.
Each man in this tale has demons and I loved learning about all of them as well as getting a chance to live in their heads. Jon is an innocent and has been sheltered all his life. Tom has a painful past. And Captain Baltsaros lives with secrets and harbors a fascination for the “darker” things in life.
The character's are written in a way that the listener cannot help but fall in love with each man; and when all three men come together it’s powerful and beautiful.
Adding to all this magic is the fact that the erotic moments between all three men are very sensual and sexy. No doubt about it, Bey Deckard certainly knows his way around writing a menage scene.
Deckard creates an elaborate stage with his descriptive words and intriguing main and secondary characters. These aren’t your typical pirates, meaning they’re not all about raping and pillaging. Our lovely Captain Baltsaros seems to have an agenda and the author’s writing grabs you and quickly immerses you.
Caged has many twists and turns and Bey does an outstanding job crafting the “pirate world” and setting it up for further adventures. I genuinely hope that Mr. Ferraiuolo continues with the Baal’s Heart series. He brings such energy and warmth to Bey’s tale and kept me thoroughly engaged the entire time. This is definitely worth listening to again!
I'm a sucker for hot, historical pirate adventures. And excitingly written debuts.
Bey Deckard's storytelling and dialogue drew me and sped me along in their travels. I especially enjoyed the journey of the three MCs' relationship, as well as their different characterizations, each having it's own journey, so that I did end up understanding and liking them. Now, some may shiver in their timbers at the light bdsm and m/m/m...not me, I did a different kind of shivering.
Sure, I would have liked it to be a true historical set in the real world, but it's evoked well enough. Maybe a little more umph to the action scenes. And the murderous MCs made me pause, but that's what I get with pirates.
I appreciated that it didn't end in a cliffhanger, but wrapped up the storyline nicely in this start of the series, while also setting me up nicely for book 2.
Another thing that really bugged me was a writing style quirk. The characters, in thought or conversation, would refer to an event in the past (often the near past). Rather than incorporating the exposition in conversation, or just maintaining a linear timeline with those events occurring in context - to be referred to later - the author instead cuts, plays out the scene the characters are referencing, then cuts back to the “present” timeline. It happens repeatedly and it’s a pretty annoying way of going about things.
I don’t know. It wasn’t bad - I considered DNFing it but ended up finishing it - but I don’t think I’ll be continuing the series.
