Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Martin's (Silk and Steel) run-of-the-mill historical set in 1805 England and the Cape Verde Islands is strictly for readers who prefer their plot subordinate to steamy scenes. In lieu of creating a believable relationship between Randall Clayton, duke of Beldon, and Cait Harmon, an American, the author substitutes pages of hot, exceedingly repetitious sex scenes and a weak plot concerning an expedition to a deserted island to find the fabled necklace Antony gave Cleopatra. Needing to fund the expedition, Cait's father relies on a dubious baron/con artist whose previous business venture led to the death of Beldon's cousin. Is Cait's father part of the con? There's a lot of dangerous trekking through jungle to shake up the limping plot, but the padded writing is just a means to jungle seductions and dangers. How many times can the hero save the heroine from rock slides and wild animals? And can this relationship between two immature individuals, based on hot sex and inane secrets, be saved? (Oct.)

From Booklist

Notorious rake Randall Clayton, seventh Duke of Beldon, believes a fraud caused his young cousin to commit suicide after losing his family fortune. His search for the truth leads him to Caitlin Harmon, the daughter of an American archaeologist who is hot on the trail of a lost necklace of Cleopatra's and seemingly in cahoots with the man Rand thinks ruined his cousin. Cait, believing that she was responsible for her mother's death, has vowed never to marry so that she can take care of her father. Not wanting to miss out on experiencing passion, however, she enters into a clandestine affair with Rand, certain that she'll never see him again. But after leaving for a remote African island in quest of the necklace, she discovers that she's pregnant. Martin is adept at weaving sex scenes into the action as the lovers face tragedies that tear them apart until they finally realize that love has captured their hearts. Diana Tixier Herald

The book description is pretty awesome, so I'll skip a recap of my own.

What did I love? To begin with, everything.

Keeping this review short will be challenging.

    Cait Harmon
She stood out to me from other heroines I've read in Regency romance. Granted, the start of the Regency era is 1811, and Cait is American, not English, but still unconventional for the times. She was fiercely independent, and an adventurer! "She didn't play by society's rules. Cait lived her life as she saw fit. She'd been places, seen things that would make the average woman swoon." My gosh, I loved her already. I should mention her bravery, too. During an expedition in Africa, Cait hit a leopard on the head with a log to save her love from becoming leopard food. It was already dead, but she didn't know that! I swear, if I never get to travel to the coast of Africa in search of lost treasures and have my own swoony hero follow me across the seas and save me from getting my face bitten off by a nasty snake, I'm going to be hugely disappointed. Damn you, romance novels!

Randall Clayton, 7th Duke of Beldon.
The ultimate rake, indeed. It was absolutely satisfying watching him lose his ever loving mind over Cait. He lost more than his mind, he lost his damn heart. I love how it all started with the sound of her laughter. Before he ever saw her, he first heard her laugh, and that sound...changed his life forever. Gah! The list of things I enjoyed about watching Cait & Rand fall in love is long. I loved it when he'd call her Caitie. I can't explain, but something about him saying it *sigh* it turned my heart all soft and mushy. He absolutely, positively, without a doubt, adored Cait. He was possessive, but so was she! Sure, they differed in their beliefs--to the point I questioned how things could possibly work out for them--but what they felt for each other was soul-mate deep love. I can honestly go on and on about Cait & Rand, swooning all over this "review" but I'll move on.

    The problem with Rand was..
He was conditioned by his father not to give in to feelings. The gentle, sensitive side of Rand was ridiculed and condemned by his father. It was literally beat into him that feelings, especially those of the heart, showed weakness in a man, and should be suppressed at all costs. But what he felt for Cait could not be contained, and well, this was the catalyst for what was to come. The man didn't know whether to scratch his watch or wind his butt. Needless to say, the issues between them get extensively messy before they're resolved. I don't know why I eat up this frustrating stuff up with a spoon, but I do. And I love it.

Now let me address the elephant in the room:
The reason this book gave many reviewers a conniption is that Rand cheated on Cait when they were married, following a tragic event. If you've read those reviews, you got the gist. I know, it sounds terrible but probably more so when you read the details out of context. However, after reading the book, I can say I'm 100% convinced Rand deserved a second chance. What is even second chance romance without characters that make mistakes? Of course, each reader gets to decide which ones are redeemable in their eyes. Because it's all subjective, as we know, or should know. No doubt, Rand fell from grace, to put it mildly. But I also understood the reason behind his destructive behavior. It wasn't callousness, but cowardice . It was an ingrained defense mechanism. Born of fear, and a soul-crushing misery. His behavior was an escape, and yes, that included an ex-mistress among all the other bad habits he lost himself in to numb the pain. The pain of losing his newborn son, and the realization that Cait had become his everything, the only person in the world who had the power to--as he believed--turn him weak. I'm not excusing him, but I'm not screaming, "Off with his head!" either. Watching him betray Cait was gut-wrenchingly devastating. Yet, it was clear to me he was also betraying himself in the process. He lost Cait as a result, and he hit rock-bottom.

I'm rambling. Enough with deconstructing Rand. Look, the man took a bullet for her at the end. What more do you people want? LOL Yeah, I know, one bullet may not be enough for some of you.

I almost stood on my bed to applaud his friend when she told him be following:
“Your father was right, Rand. You aren’t a real man. A real man would never have acted the way you did. A real man would never have left the woman he loved.”
And yet, the waterworks fell from my eyes for Rand, because I felt every bit of his repentance and misery in that moment.

HEA √ Epilogue included. The epilogue wasn't exactly grand but it still left me happy.

Having read about Rand in Nicholas's story, I expected him to be a little bit more honorable. Oh, I know he was a rake and so determined not to marry. Caitlin comes along and because she is American he assumes, quite rightly that he can get her into his bed without the commitment. They both are totally in lust with each other. I have no problem with any of that. She is committed to her father and his research, Rand is committed to being independent. She then leaves England and Rand lets her go. Fortunately he does learn she is with child. He goes after her and manages to convince her they should marry. Wow, what could possibly go wrong after this? Of course heartache and sadness just seem to be with this couple. And the way they deal with it I guess is what I found disappointing with Rand. Up until that point he was pretty much a stand up guy. But going back to his mistress was just so disappointing for me and of course when Caitlin finds out she is devastated. This book is at its most intense then and you really wonder how it can ever resolve itself. Of course Caitlin rejoins her father in the jungle a broken woman. Rand just continues to wallow for a long time in self pity. Another trait I did not expect from him. However eventually Nicholas gets him back on track to go after the woman he loves. Caitlin is not happy at all that he has returned and fights him every step of the way. Well, until he puts his life on the line for her. I guess that was finally enough to convince her that he really did love her. The sub plot of the dangerous Tallmadge taking over the exhibition is a good one. The element of danger is felt and that always heightens a good romance. I was glad this one worked out. Very emotional in certain parts. Well done by Kat Martin.

I enjoyed reading about Rand and Cait, and the adventure they had. The danger and trials they faced. And the search for the necklace was very exciting. I can understand what Cait felt finding Rand with Hannah. It's hard to trust again, the pain and worry of it happening again is hard to face. Thank you.

I found out as I started reading this book I had read it before but enjoyed it just as much. Rand Clayton Seventh Duke of Beldam hears someone at a ball laugh. The laugh captivates him she finds out she is Caitlin Harmon. Her father Donovan was a professor of Antiquities he had come to raise money. He wanted to go on an expedition to find Cleopatra's necklace. Rand and Caitlin do have a short affair but he likes his independence and she leaves to go with her father. They are going to Santa Adamo Island to search for the necklace. A friend of hers tell Rand she is pregnant. He goes after her and keeps her from marrying another man to give the baby a father. They come back to England and are happy until she loses the baby. I did not like him during this part of the book instead of staying with her and giving her comfort. He goes back to London and resumes his pre marriage life style. He even takes back an old mistress. Caitlin is told about this and she goes to London to see for herself. She finds a note left at his home where he will be she goes and sees him dining with his mistress. She leaves and rejoins her father on the island. He does nothing but drinking and then begins to have rages .Rand may have done it this time can he will her for the second time and get a HEA for them.
