White Ninja (The Nicholas Linnear Series Book 3) Kindle Edition
A sadist haunts the back alleys and sex clubs of Tokyo, picking up women, horrifically mutilating them, and leaving behind a calling card written in blood: This could be your wife. He kills fearlessly, certain the police will never catch him.
The only man who might stop this fiend is Nicholas Linnear, a martial arts expert whose childhood education in the dojos of Japan has made him one of the country’s leading practitioners of ninjutsu. But Linnear fears that his illness may have left him Shiro Ninja—stripped of his power and discipline. With the killer growing increasingly brazen, Linnear must summon all his strength and training before his own family becomes the next target.
“Compelling [and] highly charged with action,” this is a chilling tale of menace, crime, and corruption featuring the half-British, half-Chinese hero of The Ninja and The Miko, by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of the Jason Bourne series (Publishers Weekly).

About the author

Eric Van Lustbader’s first novel, The Sunset Warrior, was published in 1975. Since then, he has published more than twenty five best-selling novels, including The Ninja, in which he introduced Nicholas Linnear, one of modern fiction’s most beloved and enduring heroes, continuing his exploits in five subsequent best-sellers. His novels have been translated into over twenty languages; his books are bestsellers worldwide and are so popular whole sections of bookstores from Bangkok to Dublin are devoted to them.
Mr. Lustbader was born and raised in Greenwich Village, where he developed an interest in art as well as in writing. He lived downstairs from the young Lauren Bacall and built orange-crate racers in Washington Square Park with Keith and David Carradine. He is a graduate of Columbia College, with a degree in Sociology, but his real education came much earlier at The City & Country School where, as Mr. Lustbader, is fond of saying, “I learned all the important lessons that would stay with me for life.”
Before turning to writing full time, he enjoyed highly successful careers in the New York City public school system where he holds licenses in both elementary and early childhood education, and in the music business where he worked for Elektra Records and CBS Records among other companies. He was the first writer in the US to write about Elton John and to predict his success. As a consequence, he, Elton and Elton’s lyricist Bernie Taupin became friends. Writing for Cash Box Magazine, he also predicted the successes of such bands as Santana, Roxy Music, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, David Bowie, and The Who, among others.
Mr. Lustbader is also the author of two successful and highly regarded major fantasy series, The Pearl, published by Tor Books in the US and HarperCollins/Voyager in the UK and The Sunset Warrior Cycle. He is the author of a number of short stories, screenplays and novellas. Three of the short stories appeared in 1999: “Hush,” in Off The Beaten Path: Stories of Place for Farrar, Strauss and Giroux, “Slow Burn,” in Murder And Obsession for Delacourt Press, and “An Exultation of Termagants” in the millennial supernatural mega-collection 1999 for Avon Books. A highly successful short novel, Art Kills, was published in 2000 by Carroll & Graf.
That same year he was asked by DC Comics to write a graphic novel. Mr. Lustbader chose to write about his favorite childhood comic character, Batman. The result was “Batman” The Dark Angel,” which was the only graphic novel to be chosen as a Monthly Choice of the Quality Paperback Book Club.
In 2003, he was asked by Estate of the late Robert Ludlum to continue the series based on Jason Bourne. The Bourne Legacy, published in 2004 continues and updates the adventures of Robert Ludlum’s famous international assassin. Mr. Lustbader has gone on to write five more Bourne novels, The Bourne Betrayal, The Bourne Sanction, The Bourne Deception, The Bourne Objective, The Bourne Dominion (July, 2011).
In 2008, Mr. Lustbader wrote First Daughter to wide acclaim. The novel features Jack McClure and Alli Carson, Mr. Lustbader’s first continuing characters since Nicholas Linnear and Jake Maroc. The second novel in the series, Last Snow, was published in January, 2010. The third novel in the series, Blood Trust, is published in May, 2011.
Eric Van Lustbader serves on the Board of Trustees and is Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee of the City & Country School in Greenwich Village. He also tends his prized collection of Japanese maples and beech trees (which have been written up in The New York Times and Martha Stewart’s Living). He is a Second-LevelReiki master. He listens to music constantly and is ever on the lookout for new bands and artists. To see his picks, please visit his Web site: ericvanlustbader.com. He and his wife, the author Victoria Lustbader, live in New York City and Long Island.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2024I was surprised when I learned that not only did a third book in the Nicholas Linnear series exist, there are 8 😳
I was taken with Ninja and Milo both and it has been no less exciting to read the white ninja.
Lustbader has a way with words, sometimes too generously strewing them in the story, but somehow never boringly?
To be fair The White Ninja holds more magic that the previous two did , a detail that I did not expect and even if it was, for me, less credible in the Linnear world. I was able to accept and enjoy the story, probably because Lustbader has this way with words.
I noticed at least two typo’s in the book, so it could probably use a read through by an editor - at least as a Dane I believe there is a difference between catching a Martin and a Marlin when fishing off Florida’s coast?
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2016Nicholas Linnear is enjoying life in Japan with his wife Justine. He has surgery to remove a tumor in his brain. Once he wakes up from the surgery, he discovers that all of his ninja training and expertise has been lost to him. This makes him shiro ninja (white ninja) and he has no idea how to recover. Then he discovers that there's a new enemy trying to not only destroy him but destroy all his business interest and friends. He must find a way to overcome his lost ability and defeat his powerful foe.
This is a very well written story with many diverse characters and plot lines. This is a really enjoyable series (even though it sometimes shows it age). Recommend White Ninja to all fans of Lustbader and mystery/thriller stories in general.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2016Lustbader's Nicholas Linnear series is as satisfying today as it was when I first read it thirty some years ago. Sure, nobody uses phone booths anymore and the description of the computer technology gives away how long ago this was written. Nevertheless, the plot is well thought out, the characters developed through a series of flashbacks and the suspense is maintained throughout the book.
Years ago i read this first trilogy - The Ninja, The Miko and White Ninja and thereafter didn't have tome to go back to Linnear's adventures. now, though, I'm anxious to pick up his subsequent adventures and get lost in these books for a few hours at a time.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2014I started reading Lustbader with the Sunset Warrior trilogy when they first were published as a young soldier and never lost the reading flavor for his books. The Nicholas Lannier character development is entriging and the story line is very good (in my opinion). Lustbader seems to have done a lot of historical study which adds to his presentation. As one who dabbled in the martial arts in my youth I really appreciated the read. I have started revisiting Lustbader books and found that Amazon is the only place I could find them. Thanks Amazon!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2025The third novel in the series comes with a very important message: yes, we all reach nadirs, and need others to help us out of our slumps, yet concurrently we must appreciate that our mentors too remain vulnerable to temptation … the 3rd book of the ninja series dealt w / precisely this … our titular character fell into a slump which his first sensei aided him to surmount … only to discover that the mentor himself became the true villain
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2020Enough mystery, action, and twists to keep me reading non stop as the conflict moved to the final confrontation between light and darkness
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2013I loved this book, yet at first I hated it. The prose, as always, was amazing, but the plot was very different from the first two books, and that made me skeptical. Turns out I was skeptical for no reason at all. It's a real thriller, with our hero being challenged in new ways.
