The Ninja (The Nicholas Linnear Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
Raised in Japan by a British father and a Chinese mother, young Nicholas Linnear felt at home only in the dojo, where he gave himself over to mastering ninjutsu—the ancient art of the ninja. Over years of training, he ascended to the highest ranks imaginable—until a confrontation over the very meaning of ninjutsu changed his approach to martial arts forever, sending him on a journey that would take him across the globe.
Now, after years of success in the advertising business, Linnear quits his job abruptly when he feels himself yearning for the life he led in Japan. Searching for direction, he meets a striking beauty named Justine, but just as he is beginning to fall in love, something chilling draws him back into his past: the corpse of a coworker, murdered by a Japanese throwing star. There is a ninja loose in New York City, and as the body count rises, it becomes clear that people close to Linnear are being targeted. Only he has the skill to stop a twisted killer with a personal vendetta.
The first in a riveting series by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author who currently writes the Jason Bourne novels, this is “as gripping a tale of hatred and revenge as you will read . . . Superb” (News & Record).

About the author

Eric Van Lustbader’s first novel, The Sunset Warrior, was published in 1975. Since then, he has published more than twenty five best-selling novels, including The Ninja, in which he introduced Nicholas Linnear, one of modern fiction’s most beloved and enduring heroes, continuing his exploits in five subsequent best-sellers. His novels have been translated into over twenty languages; his books are bestsellers worldwide and are so popular whole sections of bookstores from Bangkok to Dublin are devoted to them.
Mr. Lustbader was born and raised in Greenwich Village, where he developed an interest in art as well as in writing. He lived downstairs from the young Lauren Bacall and built orange-crate racers in Washington Square Park with Keith and David Carradine. He is a graduate of Columbia College, with a degree in Sociology, but his real education came much earlier at The City & Country School where, as Mr. Lustbader, is fond of saying, “I learned all the important lessons that would stay with me for life.”
Before turning to writing full time, he enjoyed highly successful careers in the New York City public school system where he holds licenses in both elementary and early childhood education, and in the music business where he worked for Elektra Records and CBS Records among other companies. He was the first writer in the US to write about Elton John and to predict his success. As a consequence, he, Elton and Elton’s lyricist Bernie Taupin became friends. Writing for Cash Box Magazine, he also predicted the successes of such bands as Santana, Roxy Music, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, David Bowie, and The Who, among others.
Mr. Lustbader is also the author of two successful and highly regarded major fantasy series, The Pearl, published by Tor Books in the US and HarperCollins/Voyager in the UK and The Sunset Warrior Cycle. He is the author of a number of short stories, screenplays and novellas. Three of the short stories appeared in 1999: “Hush,” in Off The Beaten Path: Stories of Place for Farrar, Strauss and Giroux, “Slow Burn,” in Murder And Obsession for Delacourt Press, and “An Exultation of Termagants” in the millennial supernatural mega-collection 1999 for Avon Books. A highly successful short novel, Art Kills, was published in 2000 by Carroll & Graf.
That same year he was asked by DC Comics to write a graphic novel. Mr. Lustbader chose to write about his favorite childhood comic character, Batman. The result was “Batman” The Dark Angel,” which was the only graphic novel to be chosen as a Monthly Choice of the Quality Paperback Book Club.
In 2003, he was asked by Estate of the late Robert Ludlum to continue the series based on Jason Bourne. The Bourne Legacy, published in 2004 continues and updates the adventures of Robert Ludlum’s famous international assassin. Mr. Lustbader has gone on to write five more Bourne novels, The Bourne Betrayal, The Bourne Sanction, The Bourne Deception, The Bourne Objective, The Bourne Dominion (July, 2011).
In 2008, Mr. Lustbader wrote First Daughter to wide acclaim. The novel features Jack McClure and Alli Carson, Mr. Lustbader’s first continuing characters since Nicholas Linnear and Jake Maroc. The second novel in the series, Last Snow, was published in January, 2010. The third novel in the series, Blood Trust, is published in May, 2011.
Eric Van Lustbader serves on the Board of Trustees and is Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee of the City & Country School in Greenwich Village. He also tends his prized collection of Japanese maples and beech trees (which have been written up in The New York Times and Martha Stewart’s Living). He is a Second-LevelReiki master. He listens to music constantly and is ever on the lookout for new bands and artists. To see his picks, please visit his Web site: ericvanlustbader.com. He and his wife, the author Victoria Lustbader, live in New York City and Long Island.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2024"The Ninja" by Eric Van Lustbader is an exhilarating literary adventure that immerses readers into a world of ancient traditions, mysticism, and the art of the ninja. This captivating book unravels the tale of a young protagonist who embarks on a transformative journey filled with challenges, self-discovery, and a quest for mastery in the secretive ninja arts. Lustbader's storytelling is nothing short of brilliant, weaving intricate plots, vivid characters, and unexpected twists that keep you turning the pages eagerly. The way he delves into the profound philosophy behind the ninja way of life is both enlightening and thought-provoking. "The Ninja" is a must-read for anyone seeking a riveting blend of action, suspense, and deep insights into the world of ninjitsu.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2019Overall I liked the book; I thought it was a good introduction to the series and to the main character and the ninja culture. But there were a few things I strongly disliked:
-The female characters in the book are crazy (I don't how else to describe it); every single one.
-The main character is incredibly dense through the first half of the book (at least). It's so obvious that he is being targeted by the killer, you don't even need to understand the ninja culture of the book to get this.
There were also some things I really liked about it:
-The action is top-notch.
-The culture and history shown is incredible and the way the multiple cultures are intertwined is really interesting.
-The pace of the story is really good and kept me reading.
All in all, it was a good book that could have been a great book. But it was entertaining enough that I purchased the next one in the series. On a side note though, if you are offended by graphic scenes (of a violent or sexual nature) this book probably isn't for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2020Might be wrong of me to title this ninja action as it is so much more, it is drama, history, caracter building and of course action but is very well done and the best iv read in the genre so far. The author has really good knowledge of Japanese history, martial arts/filosofy and dose a good job to mix this with fiction to create the most deadly assassin. The storyline follows Nich who grew up in Japan in the aftermath of WW2 and his involvement in martial arts as a root to the story that unfolds. He now lives in US but as strange murders happens to people close to him he realises his past have come to hunt him in the form of a especially deadly and vengeful Ninja. I really enjoyed reading this book and have already downloaded the second installament in this serie
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2024I picked up The Ninja hoping for the literary equivalent of the old Cannon schlock-action Ninja movies. And at its’ best, The Ninja is that. But the problem is that too often the book is something else, something less good.
The book starts with a bang, as a ninja assassinates... some guy. But then, ugh, this book gets awful. The next hundred or so pages or so are a romance. We spend time getting to know our leads, Nicholas and Justine as they get to know each other. I hated them.
Nicholas was a vapid Mary Sue who made major life-changes for no discernible reason at all. Early on he abruptly quits his advertising job on the brink of wild success. But no worries, he is offered a job as a teacher at Columbia despite his lack of qualification or any interest in the job.
Justine came off as a snob who speaks like Mrs. Howell and also casually refers to homosexuals with British slang for cigarettes. I understand the book was written in 1982, but even in the 40's, authors knew that having their femme fatale casually use at-the-time acceptable slurs would be a turn-off.
I finally understand what is meant by 'florid prose'. It's almost like two writers wrote this book: when the POV is on a minor character, the writing is decent enough. But when the POV shifts to our hero, oh buddy. Such gems as "He was quite startled to see that her face in profile seemed remarkably different, as if he was seeing her now from the perspective of a different age, some other life." A little of this would be fine, but it is paragraph after paragraph. We're talking romance novel levels of turgidness.
I was also surprised by the porn-y detailed descriptions of sex. Hey, I enjoy me some smut. But the graphic sex combined with the purple prose made me laugh out loud at least once.
Also, the book wallows in the 'inscrutable Asian' stereotype. Or, to be generous, Romantic Orientalism. The idea that Asian mindsets were just so different from our Western ways that we just couldn't understand. And this book was published several years after Shōgun was a pop-culture juggernaut.
The Ninja is overly long. It could easily have lost two hundred pages, as it spends time covering the history of Japan from the end of World War II which is all interesting, but at best tangentially related to our New York story of a ninja hunting down a scummy billionaire. On the other hand, the love story of Nick and Justine wouldn’t have kept me reading. The extra bits and bobs did. So maybe it was a smart move.
Finally, after far too many pages, the ninja remembers why he’s in the story and that’s when I finally started to get my Golan & Globus cheesy action film goodness. Lustbader doesn’t write the best action scenes, but they were good enough.
Lustbader doesn’t stick the landing though. The book comes to a natural end, but it is stretched out with an unsatisfying plot twist and set-up for the sequel.
In the end, eh, it was fine. But the negatives outweighed the positives. I doubt I’ll read the sequel.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2007I read this book as a young child.(was taught to read at two.)
And it immersed me in the world of Japan and martial arts.
Ever since then I have studied various types of martial arts.
At first I thought the 'magical' stuff was untrue. In the course of study I have learned that certain things can be harnessed. One just must have the perception to do so.
I digress....
Eroticism, action, martial arts lore, japanese culture and history, fact and fiction in an excellent twirl. Lustbader is an awesome writer. The only other people I read on a regular basis are Lovecraft, Nietschze, Sun Tzu, and Musashi.
Not for everyone, but geared towards those who have a certain itch in their soul. After reading a few pages you will know if this is for you. Will be in my collection until the day I die.... or trancend. If you want authentic ninja training, look up Steven K. Hayes, Masaki Haatsumi, or Shoto Tanemura.

5.0 out of 5 stars An old favourite.
I read this back when it was first published as well as the rest of the books about Nicholas Linnear and totally fell in love with them. Yes they are a bit dated now but still worth reading for the action and atmosphere that you find in these books. Be aware though that Mr Van Lustbader does include rather graphic sex scenes in his books so if you get offended by those kind of things then perhaps you should give these books a miss or better still when coming across one of these scenes you could just skip that part, just a suggestion as otherwise you might end up missing a story that you would enjoy. Good reading to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, well worth a read for any fan of the genre.
The book that took the Ninja mythology to new heights and started an excellent series that remains unmatched in the genre. Any fan of martial arts films and fiction, owes it to themselves to read this book and at least the next two in the series. I also highly recommend his Sunset Warrior series of books, another series that breaks the mold of fantasy fiction.
