- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2014In his "Bomber Command: Reflections of War, Vol. 4: Battles with the Nachtjagd (30/31 March - September 1944)" Martin W. Bowman paints a detailed picture of the air war raging over the Reich at night between the RAF's Bomber Command, on one hand, and the Luftwaffe on the other. The book's first two chapters are on the disastrous raid against Nürnburg on the night of March 30/31, 1944. During this battle no less than 95 RAF heavy bombers were shot down by German night fighters and flak. It then goes on to cover the operations in the Spring of 1944 in preparation for Operation Overlord, including the bombing of French rail and marshalling yards, besides targets in Germany itself. Chapter 4 covers operations in support of the D-Day invasion, and Chapter 5 covers daylight operations, when Allied air superiority enabled the RAF to switch back to daylight raids. Finally, the book concludes with an appendix detailing the RAF Bomber Command order of battle on June 5, 1944.
The main strength of the book is the numerous first-hand accounts of the bombing raids by RAF and German aircrew. One fully appreciates the terror of the RAF aircrew being stalked by German night fighters over Nürnburg, for example, as scores of heavy bombers plummeted flaming out of the midnight skies. It is also a good source on the general conduct of the strategic air war.
Overall "Bomber Command: Reflections of War" is a good resource to own on the RAF's strategic bombing campaign.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent series of books on Bomber Command
This series of books covers the operation of Bomber Command in WW2. They are written in a easy to read style and cover a complex topic in a way that is readable, rather than just lists of dates and events.
