The Heart of Addiction: A Biblical Perspective Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 395 ratings

Nearly every common behavioral problem is considered to be a “disease” in American culture today: gambling, overeating, excessive time spent on the internet, excessive shopping and spending, stealing, rebellious behavior, and certainly drugs and alcohol.
God’s Word lovingly tells us the truth about the “Heart of Addiction”, yet it is a neglected resource for those who suffer from these so-called “addictions”. One of the reasons for this is that people choose to believe the theories and ideas of mankind that the “disease” renders them powerless to overcome the problem.
Non-Christians have no power to truly overcome an “addiction” to they really are “powerless.” But a Christian is not powerless if he or she has the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit to enable them to say “no” to choices that will mentally enslave them. When that occurs, the Bible calls it a “sin” problem.

From the Author

Sometimes, I simply have them read the entire book twice through, but in a program format, I assign the companion Heart of Addiction Workbook lessons, which correspond to each chapter in The Heart of Addiction, so that we can walk through the book together in a counseling context. The Workbook is a tool that encourages them to garner more "people-resource" support, to increase participation in a local church, and to be open about how they are "really" doing with their struggles while learning the Bible.

What I liked about this book is that it stresses the sufficiency of Scripture and the Holy Spirit to help the Christian addict win the battle against drugs and alcohol. The heart of the believer is the problem, and it needs changed by the Holy Spirit. Take this book and work through the chapters with that person fighting addiction, apply the what is taught to their daily life and with Gods help freedom from addiction and a closer walk with Christ will happen.

This book is an excellent book for those battling addiction whether they are personally battling it or battling it with a loved one.
This book gives a very clear understanding of the root ( heart ) of the problem. More often then not in todays church the church refers the addict to secular help, never truly understanding what addiction really is, or how to deal with it biblically. As a believer we are to stand firmly upon God’s word for every aspect of our lives.
This book is an easy read and uses biblical references for each point. It’s a must read for all believers regardless of their addiction or lack of addiction, this book helps equip us to understand addiction biblically so that we can help disciple our brother or point the unsaved to The Lord and the only cure for addiction.

This book is not primarily about “addiction” (the author himself makes this point at the end) because what a person may be “addicted” to is not the heart of the problem. The real problem is a fractured relationship with God. Hence, this book is primarily about a Christian’s trust in Christ, His Word, and their intimacy with the Lord. You see, as the author makes clear (pg. 138), the heart of addiction is prideful idolatry (sin). The good news is that there is hope and help for all “addicts” (sinners) because Christ is the One who saves sinners.

In the domain of nouthetic counseling, The Heart of Addiction is a valuable resource that does three things very well: (1) Make a sharp contrast between how secular counseling treats “addiction” vs. what God says about the problem in the Bible. In doing so, the author explains the inferiority of the former model because it merely manages outward behaviors and never addresses the root cause of the problem. God’s Word literally gets to the heart of the matter. (2) Provides a solid biblical foundation of what “addiction” actually is (in fact, the words “addict” and “addiction” are not biblical terms) and spiritually speaking, how it is far more dangerous and pervasive than most realize. (3) How the Christian, by God’s grace, can stand firm to fight against “addiction” and persevere as he or she is progressively transformed into the person God has called them to be (not an “addict.”).

Overall, the book is divided into four sections: (i) Teaching, (ii) Reproof, (iii) Correction and (iv) Training in Righteousness. Each chapter essentially performs exegesis on a Scripture or does a topical analysis of the issue at hand. The only negative thing I have to say about the book is that the author spends a large amount of time in the beginning (roughly 75 pages or so) refuting the secular model of “help” and establishing how “addiction” is not a disease but a sin that I am responsible for. Accordingly, if you are someone who already affirms the supremacy of what the Scriptures say, much of this content may feel like overkill.

Regardless, I think this is a wonderful book that all Christians will benefit from but there are two groups in particular that will likely obtain the most benefit: those who struggle with life-dominating sinful addictions and biblical counselors (whether lay or professional). In said groups, this is likely a book that you will refer back to again and again. Furthermore, this book makes a great resource to use in nouthetic counseling sessions itself as a homework assignment and/or a walkthrough text for the counselee. If for nothing else, the text is chock full of simple, practical biblical tools to help those who are in desperate need of Christ (this includes a prayer of application at the end of each chapter and appendices that will facilitate the counselee to apply the principles to their everyday life).

I have had an alcohol addiction for 10+ years. This is the first book & workbook I have ever read that put my addiction in perspective as a Christian living the life as a Christian but falling into sin. It is eye opening and the workbook has so much for you to answer and lookup in the Bible that you are convicted of your sin. I like how it compares the way the world views addiction and the way to handle it to what God says about addiction and the way to handle it. Thank you for writing this book and workbook. Be aware this is not a quick workbook to go thru it took me 1 1/2 weeks to go thru the 1st chapter of the workbook. To read the chapter it took me 1 day, that shows you how much YOU have to work on. God's battle but you have a responsibility to work on your sin. Remember quick fixes never last.

love helpful biblical perspectives and resources, relying on Christ and His power to help and change our sick, evil hearts that is opposite of worldly psychology that says people can save themselves and change themselves

This book was found at the perfect time. My whole life I have given in to different sins but ever since I was baptized in high school I have always felt a disconnect from God, a walk between him and I when I sinned. I have tried NA, AA which both led me back to God but it’s sole purpose was not biblical truth. This book clearly illustrated the power of God to overcome our SIN problems , which bring so much HOPE to overcome our “addictions” which are really just sin which separates us from God. Great book. I still love NA, but seeking God truth is priority

This book is all about blaming and shaming individuals with an addiction. I bought it for a family member and would not recommend.
