The Living God (A Handful of Men Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 136 ratings

The final volume in the Aurora Award–winning author’s epic fantasy series. “Duncan’s plots add up and his characters have personalities” (Kirkus Reviews).

War had engulfed the whole world. The imposter imperor ruling in Hub was the tool of the paranoid and almighty sorcerer Xinixo, who wielded the combined power of thousands of sorcerer slaves. And yet, despite his seeming omnipotence, the pathetic few who resisted him were still at liberty, even making a little progress. Xinixo’s prime foe, Rap of Krasnegar, had rallied troll sorcerers to the cause and was about to try enlisting the incomprehensible elves. Fortunately, for his sanity, he did not know that his daughter, Kadie, had been carried off by goblin invaders or that his son, Gath, was heading for stark Nordland to deal with the fearsome jotnar, or that his wife, Inos, was in Guwash, negotiating with gnomes. Shandie, the rightful imperor, was with her, unaware that his wife, Impress Eshiala, believed him dead and had fled with Signifer Ylo, that notorious rake. And none of them knew about the sorcerers of Thume, especially the rebel pixie girl, Thaïle, who chafed against the secret binding of a thousand years. But the odds were still impossible and Longday was fast approaching. The sorcerers of the world foretold blood on Longday.

A follow up series to a throughly enjoyable series.
Full of characters you hate to say goodbye to, I was thrilled to find this second series.
I especially like how the author dealt with sensitive or gruesome topics (ie: intimate encounters, realities of war, abduction, torture). He didn't pretend like they didn't happen or have real and lasting impact on the characters (ie: Disney fairytale) but neither did he go into fulsome details (ie Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Saw, or 50 Shades of Gray).
I especially appreciated this bc it allows this book to be enjoyed by a broad age range. I don't need to hesitate to recommend it to young and old alike.

I love this series of books, can't put them down! part of me is horrified at the level of violence in them, but they are still a fascinating view of an alternate reality. And a really good story.

I love Dave Duncan, and this is one of his best and well thought out worlds. Also one of the only sequel series that stands up to the original

Can't get enough of Duncan's series. He always gives the reader a good ride with real characters and great plots!!!! Keep up the good work!

I loved all of the other books in the Handful of Men series. This one, not so much. A pretty disappointing ending to an otherwise great series. That said, as with all his other books, David Duncan is a great story teller and his books are exciting and very easy to get through.

After reading the first trilogy by this author, a man of his word, the second half of the trilogy was a big disappointment. It was poorly written and I found myself not caring what happened to the characters as their motivations were shallow and not well developed.

Great first 3.75 books and then the ending was astoundingly disappointing and really puts a pall on the entire series.

Spoilers: Three books of building up to this great climatic battle between the protagonist forces and the enemy and....the author has a god snap his fingers and it's all done. What a monumental let down. It truly ranks as one of the worst endings I've ever read. My mind just boggles that this was the end goal.

And the plot holes leading up to it were bad. Demigods are super powerful, but very very few people can handle it. Rap, one of the main characters, used to be a demigod and thus can handle it, but gave up the power. They find one demigod to join their cause, but it's not quite enough....so, just make the Rap a demigod again for the final battle and have him give it up again. What the hell, no one thinks of that?

Crinkly
5.0 out of 5 stars a great conclusion
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 13, 2013
I loved the magic casement series, and expected to love this quadrilogy too. But only the fourth book lived up to my expectations.

Books 1 & 2 plodded along rather like a scene setting travelogue. I found this incredible, because I have never before experienced Duncan's writing as so... Bland.

Things only started to perk up half way through book 3, and then the 4th was everything that I have learned to expect from him - tight, left field plot twists, interesting characterisation, unexpected compassion, unexpected clinical slaughter. Great stuff.

So, if you want to learn the conclusion of events started in the magic casements series, and you don't mind a dull first half, then go for it. On the other hand, If this is your first Duncan foray, I would recommend starting elsewhere.
