The Great Reformer: Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 503 ratings

A biography of Pope Francis that describes how this revolutionary thinker will use the power of his position to challenge and redirect one of the world's most formidable religions

An expansive and deeply contextual work, at its heart
The Great Reformer is about the intersection of faith and politics--the tension between the pope's innovative vision for the Church and the obstacles he faces in an institution still strongly defined by its conservative past. Based on extensive interviews in Argentina and years of study of the Catholic Church, Ivereigh tells the story not only of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the remarkable man whose background and total commitment to the discernment of God's will transformed him into Pope Francis--but the story of why the Catholic Church chose him as their leader.
With the Francis Revolution just beginning, this biography will provide never-before-explained context on how one man's ambitious program began--and how it will likely end--through an investigation of Francis's youth growing up in Buenos Aires and the dramatic events during the Perón era that shaped his beliefs; his ongoing conflicts and disillusionment with the ensuing doctrines of an authoritarian and militaristic government in the 1970s; how his Jesuit training in Argentina and Chile gave him a unique understanding and advocacy for a "Church of the Poor"; and his rise from Cardinal to the papacy.

Review

“In Austen Ivereigh's engaging work, we come to more fully learn and appreciate the circumstances and influences that shaped Jorge Bergoglio's journey: first as a young Jesuit leader, then as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and now as shepherd of over one billion Catholics. The many fascinating events and challenges recounted in The Great Reformer demonstrate that the key to understanding Pope Francis and his vision for the Church begins above all by recognizing his unfailing faith in the love and mercy of Jesus Christ.” ―Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York and author of Praying in Rome: Reflections on the Conclave and Electing Pope Francis

“Easily the best treatment of Pope Francis's Argentine background in English, written by someone who knows Catholicism inside and out. Masterful, indispensable, and gripping.” ―John L. Allen Jr., associate editor, Cruz and The Boston Globe

“Ivereigh has written the best available chronicle of the formative events in the life and thinking of Jorge Mario Bergoglio and demonstrates how his call for a ‘Church in permanent mission' extends and deepens the ‘New Evangelization' proclaimed by St. John Paul II.” ―George Weigel, author of Evangelical Catholicism"

“Well written, full of information; this is the best biography of Pope Francis to date.” ―Thomas Reese, Senior Analyst, National Catholic Reporter and author of Inside the Vatican: The Politics and Organization of the Catholic Church

“Austen Ivereigh paints the story of the momentous papal transition of 2013 with accurate, vivid, graphic, strokes and places the reader in awe before the brilliant canvas of contemporary Church history. The Great Reformer helped me to realize anew the sheer magnitude, power and influence of Benedict's humble and courageous decision and Francis' bold and daring revolution of tenderness inaugurated on March 13, 2013. If you wish to understand Pope Francis, read this book.” ―Father Thomas Rosica, CSB; CEO, Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation

“Probing, comprehensive, eminently readable and absorbing . . . In a growing list of books on the first Latin American pope, Ivereigh's is uniquely well informed and persuasive.” ―Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia

“Austen Ivereigh has produced about the best one-volume biography of Pope Francis that you'll find. The Great Reformer explores the fascinating story of Jorge Mario Bergoglio's life in Argentina, with its highlights and shadows. And in explaining where Francis came from, Ivereigh is able to give us a realistic and insightful account of what Bergoglio is up to as pope, and where he is taking the Catholic Church.” ―David Gibson, national reporter for Religion News Service and author of The Rule of Benedict: Pope Benedict XVI and His Battle with the Modern World

“‘You have to be normal,' Pope Francis told the Jesuit Antonio Spadaro, setting the tone for their long interview last summer. ‘Life is normal.' This is what's especially remarkable about Austen Ivereigh's biography of Francis: Ivereigh depicts Jorge Mario Bergoglio as an extraordinary figure by showing him in the settings of his ‘normal' life, from the Jesuit Colegio Maximo to the bus shelters of Buenos Aires bus to the Casa Santa Marta in Rome. No recent pope has gotten a biography as sensible, as culturally adept, and as attuned to the ongoing moment as this one.” ―Paul Elie, author of The Life You Save May Be Your Own and Reinventing Bach

“Readers...will revel in the intricate parallels between the personal life of the pope and the socio-political environment he was raised in and inhabits now...A meticulous and lovingly written biography that will please both knowledgeable and amateur readers.” ―Library Journal

“An admiring defense of the new pope...A quick, efficient job of fairly sketching this extraordinary life.” ―Kirkus

“Consider this book the cornerstone of any collection on Pope Francis and twenty-first-century Christianity.” ―Ray Olson, Booklist (STARRED REVIEW)

“[Ivereigh] is the ideal papal biographer...[A] detailed and well-written examination of Pope Francis. ...With its wealth of biographical information that offers an in-depth look at formative influences, this is the best examination of the current pope to date.” ―Publishers Weekly

“An in-depth picture of Jorge Bergoglio...already being spoken of as the definitive biography of this Pope. Ivereigh[is] uniquely fitted for the task by an Oxford University doctorate that was an investigation into the Church and politics in Argentina between 1930 and 1960. A fluent Spanish speaker, this expertise gained him unrivalled access to the Jesuits in Argentina during his research and enabled him to read everything Pope Francis has ever written. When he went on to attend and report on last month's synod, he had possibly the greatest understanding of any lay person there of what was actually going on, why, and what it would mean.” ―Christian Today

Austen Ivereigh is arguably the leading English-language interpreteter of the pontificate of Pope Francis. A British writer, journalist and commentator known for his bestselling biographies of Francis, 'The Great Reformer' (2014-15) and 'Wounded Shepherd' (2019), he co-authored with Pope Francis his bestselling New York Times reflections on the post-pandemic world 'Let Us Dream: the Path to a Better Future' (2020).

Austen is also a Fellow in Contemporary Church History at Campion Hall, University of Oxford.

His most recent book, 'First Belong to God' (Feb 2024), is a week-long retreat "with" Pope Francis based on the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius, which has a foreword by Pope Francis.

Austen writes regularly for The Tablet in the UK, as well as America and Commonweal in the United States, and is a sought-after commentator on the BBC, Sky News and other news channels. His articles have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Times, The Spectator. The Guardian, and many other newspapers.

In the early 2000s he was deputy editor at The Tablet before going on to work for the then Archbishop of Westminster (London), Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, as his public affairs director. Inspired by the cardinal's advocacy of immigration reform he campaigned and organized with Citizens UK. In 2011 he published a book on Catholic social teaching and community organizing called Faithful Citizens.

In 2010, he created a project called Catholic Voices to train young authoritative commentators to appear in the media during the visit to the UK of Benedict XVI. He went on to author, with Kathryn Jean Lopez and others, the book 'How to Defend the Faith without Raising Your Voice', which has been translated into many languages.

After the election in March 2013 of Francis, the first Argentine pope, Austen was able to draw on his Oxford University D.Phil.on the Church and politics in Argentina to embark on the first comprehensive biography of Jorge Mario Bergoglio. 'The Great Reformer' was the result of dozens of interviews and primary documents he obtained in Buenos Aires over many months. The book's success launched him on what has become the major focus of his life these days: interpreting the Francis pontificate.

When not in Rome or giving talks at home and abroad, Austen can be found with his wife Linda and many animals on his regenerative small farm near the Welsh border, from where he writes a regular column, 'Wild Faith', inspired by Francis's social-ecological teaching, Laudato Si'.

Austen speaks and writes fluently in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. He is on X as @austeni.

There is only one world leader in our day who is
consistently positive and uplifting in his gestures,
words and focus. He is Pope Francis. I have read
most of the books, articles and his writings that
have come out since he was elected and this book
    is the best.

It offers broad background on his life situations
that have made him the man he is and gives a
clear insight into his Jesuit spirituality which
has so directed and enlivened him.

The writing itself is beautiful and the historical
situations are made clearly accessible to anyone,
    Catholic or otherwise.

It is most encouraging to read about such a man,
immersed in the people, with God as his focus.
    A great book.

Facsinating - who knew that there are "bergolismos" in the Spanish speaking world (words that Card Bergolio coined to express precise actions that had no word prior)? A lot of Argentine history to set the stage for the youth, formation, and early experiences of the man who became Papa Francisco, and which clearly colours his view of the world today. The concept of "pueblo fiel" as the ultimate deposit of God's truth rather than some committee, or quasi-governmental body, at the Vatican, explains his going out to the people and embracing them (quite literally in some cases!), explains his desire to be with the pueblo fiel whenever possible, and when not to be at least with the world as much as possible. It is an easy, but fast paced, read for someone with a historical interest, a little more attention needed to get the philosophical and theological intent of his pontificate, but worth the study.

At age 78, this is the first book review I have ever written and I am a book worm from way back when. This book on Pope Francis, the Great Reformer has truly made an impact on my life. His person, words and deeds has brought freshness to my religious life on this year of my Golden Jubilee of religious profession. One fundamental truth that I have grasped so powerfully is the Pope's insistence on the cross as the source of God's merciful love. Where before I barely took time to gaze on a crucifix, large or small, because I was so afraid, ashamed, intimidated by the sight of it more so from what I have learned, preached about, on my participation in such ignominy. I could only think of my sinfulness. With this book I have discovered a new way. I have started to look at a crucifix more closely and directly. I have began to feel the love Jesus has for me in undergoing such inhuman degradation. I can now pray with Him, to Him and in Him, to ask forgiveness for all the sins I have committed, continue to commit and will commit, believing deeply that He has first felt all that before me.
To Austin Ivereigh thank you for all that you have invested in this endeavor, you have gained a reader and look forward to your other books.

“The Great Reformer” by Austen Ivereigh is a splendid biography of Jorge Bergoglio, the Argentine prelate best known to the world as Pope Francis. Ivereigh is a Catholic journalist and an expert on Argentina, and so well positioned to write authoritatively about church and politics in that country.

Each chapter intercuts the linearly told account of Bergoglio’s life with anecdotes about Pope Francis and about his ascension to the See of Peter. This helps leaven what can at times be an occasional slog, especially the thorough examination of the politicohistorical backdrop of Bergoglio’s life. I, for one, appreciated the historical context since I knew so little about it, but I still would have appreciated more treatment than Ivereigh delivers of the contemporary religious issues. When Ivereigh does address the roiling ecclesiological, theological and pastoral debates of Latin America, he does so with passion, albeit without the fullness of his political expositions. A little more storytelling might also have enlivened the biography.

At times the writing feels rushed—one senses the pressure of getting out a Pope Francis bio before others do—as, for instance, when the author repeats phrases. On pp. 40 and 41, he writes of “exuberant” pilgrims, and on pp. 384 and 387 he describes Pope Benedict XVI as a “father figure.” There is also the inconsistency: on pp. 69 and 71 Ivereigh talks of sports in the Jesuit formation house in Chile, Casa Loyola, where the young Jesuit Bergoglio spent his “juniorate,” as being basketball and volleyball in one place, and then just basketball in the other. These are minor blemishes in an otherwise well written work, but they are indications of the haste of publication and lack of sufficient editorial attention.

While future biographers will focus on the Pope’s pontificate, this book will yet remain as a solid English-language introduction to Bergoglio’s years before he was elected pontiff. The reader is left better educated about the Pope’s relatively conservative theological outlook and his embracing of popular religious practices, as well as his commitment to the poor and oppressed. I remain deeply impressed with the Pope, and Ivereigh’s book has made me smarter about Francis’s thinking behind his sometimes controversial--but in the end not really surprising--decisions, interviews, and writings.

You hear and see a lot about Francis and the Roman curia in the news, but this book takes you in detail to what is actually happening. Beneath all the gossip you learn that Francis keeps his eye on the prize: leading all people of good will to engage with he poor and with saving the planet. It also tells a different story than "Two Popes", charming as that story may be. Benedict did not install Francis in his seat and Francis did not convert Benedict to humanity. If you want the whole story on Francis, you need to read both volumes of this bio. You will wade through a lot of Argentine characters and history, but that's where Francis became who he is.

This is a big book and heavy to hold, but I hardly wanted to put it down. The author knows Argentina well and of course fluent in Spanish, and has studied material both written and by interviews in detail. Yet the book was not boring at all, and all the details built up a xonsistent picture. Some facts about Bergoglio's career within the Jesuit order could be disputed, and have been, but the author acknowledges some of these in part as possible to be interpreted differently. ~For anyh one who is serious about finding out about the new pope this book can be highly recommended.
