- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2014For a period in my life I had a growing passion for baseball when Canada had representation in both the National and American leagues. I was a bit fickle - starting with the Expos but getting wrapped up (as many Canadians did) when the Jays became a strong contender. So it was with interest I opened Prime’s latest offering to refresh my memories about the team’s history and some of the colourful participants like George Bell, Dave Stieb, Roberto Alomar and (briefly) Roger Clemens. The author sketches out biographies and anecdotes of many of the players and several of the off-field personalities in the back office or from the broadcasting business. Prime has deep knowledge of the game, writes well, sustains your interest and offers up regular items of interest or anecdotes that are very amusing. Do check it out.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2017I would have to disagree with the thoughts of another reviewer which stated that the info in the book could have easily been found on Wikipedia. Some parts of the book are extremely detailed; much more than a wiki article would have, and that's what the "Tales From The....." series is all about. However, all things wiki aside, this book shortchanges some players in the Blue Jays history with a short write up, sometimes two sentences, and it leaves the reader wanting much more. Granted, the most popular players would likely have multiple pages and lots of info - and they should - but it felt a bit empty at times. If the author was using many sources and interviewing people connected to the team, it seems that more information could have been obtained for the book. Overuse of the word "Yup" runs throughout as well, and that gets old starting with the very first time you see it! Also the other reviewer mentioned the "Jay Happ" debacle. Was the author using a speaking system for writing?
This "Tales from the Blue Jays Dugout" book chooses to have players listed alphabetically, while also putting things like Exhibition Stadium and Skydome within their respective letters in that same alpha list. Both stadiums severely needed to have longer write ups for being such a big part of the history. The issue I had with a straight-up alpha listing is that it makes for herky-jerky jumping around, all over time from one year to another, so it's harder to get into the flow of team history.
For those who enjoy the "Tales from the" dugout/sidelines/locker room series, check out the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Saints books in the series. These feature the best presentation in a nice chronological format. They are informative, historical, with lots of great in-depth information and accuracy. They are written by different authors and some even have clever section names of the book, and then chapters that deal with certain points in time. The Detroit Pistons and Denver Broncos ones are not far behind in terms of execution and delivery.
These books are advertised as having 'hidden stories' and inside the locker room type stuff in a teams history. The Blue Jays one is good, but isn't in the top level of this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2014I'd really like to give this book a 2.5 or a 2.75. It's really not a terrible book, but as a lifelong Jays fan it made me cringe to see some of the basic errors the author made. For example, he said that Major League Baseball has 26 teams when they have 30. He implied during Tony Fernandez's section that the Jays won the 1984 AL East, and he also said a player made his MLB debut on 2 separate dates. He also called JA Happ "Jay Happ." Excellent book but it would've been better with some better proofreading.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2017Ok book about multiple Blue Jays players.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2014I've read pretty much every book related to the Toronto Blue Jays and this was the worst. I could easily look up the names that this author has decided to write about and read about them on Wikipedia. It's almost like that is what author has done. Some of the players, he has written only one sentence about. These are not "Tales from the Dugout", these are already known facts about Blue Jays players. Brutal.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2017Only redeeming quality are the quotes from Jerry Howarth but otherwise a very sloppy book, clearly wasn't proofread, and poorly planned. Stories are random and many players are spoken about too much whereas others are left to be a footnote. Only reason I completed it was because it was a gift from my wife.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre tales
On the whole, Tales from the Toronto Blue Jays Dugout is worth reading. The writing style is reasonably clear and I came away after reading this book with at least a cursory understanding of some of the "key" Blue Jays players, past and present.
I came into this book hoping to read anecdotal stories by players, coaches, and others, pulled directly from the Jays dugout. What I got, however, was a hodge-podge of newspaper-style summations interspersed with occaisional player quotes. What I wanted was to understand what it was like for the players who played for the Jays - to put myself in their shoes - preferably in their own words. Tales, on the other hand, is largely a collection of newspaper journalist stories rather than stories told by the players in their own words. The views expressed in Tales are usually either those of the author or other journalists with anecdotes supplied to support them. I think this was a collosal missed opportunity to write a book about the Jays done with a lighter touch and consisting mainly of stories told by the players themselves.
Missed opportunities aside, Tales is still worth reading for 3 reasons: 1) If you are a fan of the Jays, you will probably learn something you didn't know. 2) Casual fans (such as myself) will learn about events that took place before they started following the team or missed along the way (I was interested to read about the longest game in Jays history for example). 3) As a reference work. Although this is also the weakest reason to read Tales (some of the player descriptions are literally a single paragraph describing one thing the author thought important about them and that's it) it is useful if you are trying to recall some piece of baseball trivia about a particular player.
Overall I recommend borrowing though not buying this book. It is neither a comprehensive history of the Toronto Blue Jays nor is it a particularly interesting collection of stories. I frequently disagreed with the author's assertions on the relative importance of particular Blue Jays players as well as their place in history. Perhaps the author's fondness with a certain well-known baseball team based in Boston coloured his telling of the Blue Jays' stories. But regardless of the author's background, reading Tales did accomplish one thing: It left me wanting to know more - to know more about the people about the lives, hopes, and accomplishments - of those who played for the Toronto Blue Jays. 3/5

1.0 out of 5 stars Book cover
This book arrived with the cover in bad shape. Appears to have been read and returned. Unhappy customer. Didn’t have time to return and gave to Grandson the way it arrived.
