Lobel illustrates how food availability, immigrant cuisine, growing affluence and other factors combined to create a marvel of a food culture. She also weaves in a darker tale of unscrupulous vendors who ignored unsanitary conditions, resulting in innocent people paying a miserable price. Lobel has done us a service in providing a vivid and unique portrait of New York from such an important period in its development as a megalopolis.
