Do I Look Skinny in This House?: How to Feel Great in Your Home Using Design Psychology Kindle Edition
Our homes are so much more than just walls, windows, and floors. They exemplify who we are. We wear our homes like we wear haute couture—and put them on display for all to see. In Do I Look Skinny in This House?, celebrity interior designer Kelli Ellis shows you how to use the principles of design psychology to turn your home into your ideal haven—an extension of yourself.
To design your home in a meaningful way, you need to start with the “why” rather than the “how.” Knowing why you adore certain colors, styles, and decor is so much more important than knowing where to place furniture in a room. Understanding the principles that create ambiance, feeling, and mood in your home are key to creating your ideal haven.
With the inspiration and framework Kelli provides, you’ll be able to reimagine your home with all the joy, fulfillment, and contentment you seek.

Design Psychology moves us beyond our basic needs of food, water and shelter - four walls, a floor, ceiling, door and windows - and explains why we want our walls, our rooms and our finishes to influence and perhaps change the way we feel.
What does your home say about you? More importantly, what does it say to you? What voices do you hear when you walk through your front door and do you like what they have to say?
And why is this so important?
I ask myself this question after every meeting with every new client. To this day, I am still amazed that even after all the DIY shows, home improvement stores and magazines, there are still thousands of people searching for the perfect environment and that certain feeling. They are still trying to create the spaces that speak to them. I needed to further understand why there is such a struggle. Why can't we find comfort and satisfaction in our homes and offices - is it so complicated? What is it my clients are really looking for? Is it more than just decor?
Design Psychology goes beyond the how - how to update your house, how to paint your walls and how to decorate your living room - into the why.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2014I am a fan of Kelli Ellis. Watching her on HGTV and other network shows has always been fun but I was pretty blown away by her new book. I wont give it away but the idea that your home should fit you and your personality seems like an easy thing to accomplish. The truth in practice is that many of our homes reflect playing it safe. Kelli offers some really practical tips and filtering down all the so-so, and likable design to find what is true to you. I think your buying decisions for your home decor is sure to be much more targeted and please YOU more that you ever thought. I know I have some shopping to do!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2014Sort of not what I was hoping for; totally unscientific. Like a magazine article in good housekeeping. I was wanting to hear research about why we are so tied up in our houses.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2014This book really helped my wife when we moved into our new home. Kelli's insight and ideas helped us create an amazing living space for us. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2015First off, this book doesn't have any photos or illustrations of interiors. If that's what you're looking for, you'll surely be disappointed.
However, if you're looking for a different approach to interior design, mostly based on how you "feel" about your home, what furniture, objects, colors, etc. have an effect on how positively you react to them, this will be a refreshing change from the usual DIY interior design books out there.
I found one piece of advice really helpful: How objects from a toxic household or person can have a negative effect on not only your home, but your mental state. I have some things of my late mother's that I might let go of soon, just for that very reason.
It's worth taking a look at. However, be warned that this book was either written in a hurry, relied on spell check, or poorly proofread, because I found some glaring typos:
Page 18: "Right down the brand name, style and product number, and then search for it online...."
Page 84: "Personally, I like warmer tones and when I think of orange, I think of my coy fish that I love."
Also, on page 59, Ellis states that "An ancient Chinese philosopher, Wabi Sabi, emerged during the Zen dynasty, and his philosophy aligns especially well with today's Design Psychology principles." I don't believe that Wabi Sabi was the name of a person. From what I do know, Wabi Sabi is a Japanese philosophy, and the words are translated as, "wabi" (subdued, austere beauty), and "sabi" (rustic patina). Anyhow, I was a little disturbed when I read this, and it did distract me from the good advice and examples given in the book. If I'm wrong, please don't hesitate to correct me on that one!!!
Besides that, it's a nice change and a fresh approach to the subject. Five stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2014Kelli designed the remodel on my home and I love the feeling and look of it, she listened when I said I want down filled sofa's, even though they tend to look sloppy, but she did a blend and they look great! Her choice of colors and fabrics, even the most comfy sleep by number mattresses! She is so knowledgeable, and guides you to the perfect combination of furniture, rugs, light fixtures. Meeting her and her husband John Ellis years ago put me on the path to health and fitness and I shall be forever grateful.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2014I have been a fan of Kelli Ellis for a long time! This book based on her concept of design psychology really provides a totally new spin on creating a home that inspires you to live your best life. I was fortunate enough to have Kelli do the design on my home and she practices what she preaches. She is super down to earth, fun and provides amazing design tips. This book is a must buy for anyone who is even remotely interested in interior design.
