An FBI special agent finds her personal and professional lives colliding in this crime novel by a New York Times–bestselling author.

FBI Special Agent Christina Rossi had it all—for a while: a loving family, a career on an upward track, the works. Then a takedown of some eco-terrorists turned unexpectedly bloody, questions are being asked and the fast track is nothing but a memory as she doggedly pursues a slave labor case that might involve a Chinese mob and might be a complete bust. The family went away during an ugly divorce and her ex-husband’s high-end life with a beautiful, upscale new wife has lured her daughter into a risky social circle and turned her against her mother.

Things are almost too good to be true when a new man in her life, Jack Dexter, handsome, smart and very well-off, brings about a startlingly wonderful romance and a change in her day-to-day circumstances and even connects her to some information on the seemingly dead-end case she won’t give up.

Too good to be true turns out to be what’s going on when a pervert’s murder starts to unfold Dexter’s dark secrets, her case begins turning into an uncontrollable monster and her daughter’s life hangs in the balance.

Having read most of Dietz' sci-fi work, he honestly surprised me with this very tightly written crime thriller. I'm not a huge fan of crime or thrillers, but the writing is so tight and the situations so compelling that I was quickly drawn in. While there is always something to say that a writer might have done differently; for me, at least, the errors or issues with this book were minor and easily over looked.

This book opens with an assault on a University lab by eco-terrorists and Dietz keeps it real by not having the "good guys" win every round. From the opening action to the closing scene, I found the characters easy to buy into and I found my self continually turning the pages, not wanting to put it down. What more needs to be said?

I really enjoyed this book... So much so that I bought the paperback and later bought the kindle edition as well.... The female lead was one tough lady and she made the story happen. It had a good plot going for it and the action was superb. The only thing I didn't like about the story was the death of one of the characters just before the end....

I found the story to be engaging and I find William Dietz's writing style easy to read. Basic premise is a crime novel (human trafficking environmental terrorist) with main characters that have flaws.

Snake Eye (2008) is a standalone police thriller novel. It is set in the present within Seattle and its environs.

In this novel, Christina Rossi is a Special Agent in the FBI. She was married and has a ten year old girl. After a year long undercover investigation, she was divorced by her husband and lost custody of her daughter.

John Theel is a Supervisory Special Agent in the FBI. He is Rossi's boss.

Amy Haxton is an Assistant Special Agent in Charge in the FBI. She is Theel's boss.

Harley Demont is a Special Agent in Charge in the FBI. He is Haxton's boss.

Jack Dexter is a former SEAL officer. Dex had lost his left foot to an IED in Iraq.

Americo Lopa is the leader of an Earth Liberation Army cell. He is conducting an operation against a professor who is high on the ECODOOM hit list.

Marci MacDonald, Larry Shaw and Greg Aspee are the member of Lopa's cell. Greg is somewhat simple minded.

In this story, Dex is looking out the living room window with his Nikon telescope. He notices "Glass Eye" is peeking out through her curtains. Then he waits for "Amy" to return home.

Rossi is taking Missy back to her father. She had planned an overnight party for Missy, but the office called to send her out to replace a sick agent. Missy is very angry at her mother and plays the guilt card.

As Rossi is driving toward the stakeout, Larry knocks on the passenger window of the stakeout car. When an agent rolls down the window, the ELA cell member shoots him and his partner. Then he carefully withdraws from the car.

Marci rings the doorbell at the University of Washington lab. A grad student looks out the peephole and sees a pretty girl. Despite orders to admit no one except lab workers, he opens the door.

Marci shoots the grad student and reopens the door to admit Greg. He is loaded down with gasoline bottles. Then she waits for Larry.

Larry steps over the grad student as he walks toward the lab. The grad student fumbles out his cellphone and calls 911. Then he passes out from the shock.

The cell members shoot their target. Then they pour gasoline over the workbench and reagent containers and strike a match. As the lab starts burning, they walk back to the front door.

Rossi arrives and notices a crowd around the stakeout car. She orders the spectators to back off. A resident from the university hospital is examining the agents. She tells Rossi that they are both dead.

Then Greg walks out the front door. Rossi orders him to stop and fires at him as he ignores her order. The bullet knocks Greg down, but he is wearing armor and gets up again.

Greg grabs a woman in the crowd. He is supposed to shout ELA slogans before lighting the gasoline, but forgets the words. Then the pain kicks in and he just screams.

Lopa records the shootings and sends the video to several TV stations in Seattle. Rossi becomes an instant celebrity. She is put on administrative leave until the shooting review.

Demont comes to Seattle to review the shootings. Haxton tells him that Rossi is an exemplary agent. Demont suggests that Rossi be reassigned to another case.

Theel arranges a diversion for the media to allow Rossi to get out of her house. Haxton breaks the news to her. Rossi has been assigned to the Snake Eye task force, investigating methods used to smuggle illegal aliens into the Seattle area. This task force also includes people from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Seattle Police Department, and the Coast Guard.

This tale complicates Rossi's already hectic life. Dex falls in love with her. Rossi is beginning to return the affection, but then Dex becomes a potential witness. They say goodbye in bed.

The media are not portrayed in a sympathetic manner. They have several feeding frenzies in this volume. And they provide free publicity to the ecofreaks.

This story should have been made into a movie. It has terror, suspense, and romance. It also has beautiful, competent women in action roles and a child in danger. Perfect for Hollywood.

Insofar as I am aware, this is the only police thriller written by the author. At least it is the only one on sale by Amazon, but
Hitman: Enemy Within  is somewhat similar.

Highly recommended for Dietz fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of FBI procedures, sociopathic murderers, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!
