This is the first tale of the Nedao people, told from the perspective of Nisana, and Aeldra of the cat kin. The story is left to her, as one of the few witnesses of the trials of the brave young queen Ylia, the Lady of Nedao. As she trains Ylia in the arts of her powers, Nisana is the only mind to have full access to all of Ylia’s feelings and emotions as she is thrown into exile from the city of the king and subjected to dark magic and a dangerous journey through unfriendly lands.

I was very excited to find this book in kindle. I read this when I was younger and have been searching for it for years. I highly recommend it to young adults who like books with strong female characters.

"The Tales of Nedao" is one of my favourite fantasy series of all time. I read them when they were first released in the late 1980's, attracted as I was by the cover art of Martin Springett, who had also illustrated the covers for Guy Gavriel Kay's epic, "The Fionavar Tapestry". Ylia very quickly became one of my favourite fictional heroines. Over the years, through multiple moves of my household, my paperback collection found its way into long-term storage, but when I discovered an out of place box about 2 years ago that revealed itself to be part of that collection, I was happy to be reminded of Ru Emerson's work. Sadly, only one of the books of "The Tales of Nedao" was in that particular box. I was very disappointed to note that "The Tales of Nedao" had not achieved a measure of popularity that allowed it to remain in print, or to be offered in ebook format, so when I discovered recently that they had finally become available on the Kindle platform, I was overjoyed. I immediately purchased the first volume.

To say that I am disappointed with the quality of the transcription would be an understatement of the highest order. At first, I was willing to overlook the occasional seemingly typographic error, but as I progressed through the first two books and began the third, I could no longer take it. It is quite clear that these transcriptions to electronic format were produced either via optical character recognition, or they were transcribed by some third world service employing people who are obviously not entirely fluent, shall we say, with the finer points of the English language. These errors are not typographic, so much as they are structural errors arising from a deeply flawed production process.

As I began the third volume, the title page gives the subtitle of the book as "The Third Take of Nedao". In the second paragraph of the first chapter, we are presented with the following sentence, "Two small rowboats were fled to the long stone mole on the inland side." Clearly, these versions were not so much as given a cursory proofreading or momentary comparison to the original text. I have seen more accurate work from book pirates.

The outright transcription errors are compounded by layout errors that have erased intra-chapter scene changes, so that the reader is left confused as to how two characters that are spearated by an ocean seem to be in the same scene, as well as errors of typography that confuse the difference between Nisana's chapter ending narrations and the main storyline.

Open Road Media should be ashamed of themselves--they have no care for the integrity or quality of their product, and it shows. Amazon should demand better standards from their vendors. While I am thrilled to see that this series I love is available to a new generation, I cannot in good conscience recommend the purchase of this version. Prospective readers would do better to hunt down the original paperbacks, which will give them the additional benefit of Martin Springett's artwork. Clearly, Open Road Media was uninterested in licensing Springett's images for this edition. Unfortunately, Ru Emerson herself will not see any of the profits from sales of used paperbacks; I can only hope that she is receiving royalties from this edition. In today's world, however, that is not by any means a certainty.

Ru Emerson's excellent work deserves better treatment, and so do her readers.
