Liza thought she was prepared to lose her father—but coping is harder than she ever imagined

When Liza’s dad finds out he has less than a year to live, he asks his family to help him make his remaining time as happy as possible. After the initial shock, twelve-year-old Liza, her three siblings, and their mother resolve to make her dad’s last year wonderful—especially on Christmas, his favorite holiday.

Liza tries hard to prepare herself for living without him. But after he’s gone, she finds that she is still not ready—and maybe she never will be. The family, now faced with financial problems, has to move into a smaller home, which adds to their tension and anger. As another holiday season approaches, Liza feels celebrating without her dad is disloyal, and boycotts the holiday.

Liza’s search for the courage to face her grief, anger, and guilt will resonate with readers of any age who have survived the loss of a loved one.

This ebook features an illustrated personal history of Ann M. Martin, including rare images from the author’s collection.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Martin's fifth novel brings readers into the world of real, recognizable peopleboth adults and children. Through narrator Liza O'Hara, 12, we experience the seasons before and after the death of her father. Knowing he has less than a year before his heart fails, Mr. O'Hara wants his family to help him make his remaining time happy for all. Guided by their gallant mother, Liza and her teenage brother Brent involve younger sisters Carrie and Hope in planning a joyous Christmas and special days until spring. Then the father dies, a tragedy his widow and children bear with their mutual support and the kindness of friends. It's hard, though, to endure grief as well as worry over money, moving into a small house where Liza, particularly, feels cramped. She also thinks the family is disloyal to Mr. O'Hara as another Christmas approaches and she alone refuses to participate in holiday preparations. By the end of the poignant and quietly humorous story, however, Liza understands how she must live, "without you" as she had "with you."

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8 Liza O'Hara's family is abruptly confronted with the news that Mr. O'Hara is dying from heart disease. After the initial shock the family unites to make his last months as enjoyable as possible including an elaborate Christmas celebration. Following his death the grieving family is burdened with financial debt which necessitates their moving from the large home that has been in the family for years into a smaller house. For 12-year-old Liza the most difficult change is facing the emptiness caused by her father's absence, which is magnified as her first holiday season without him approaches. Martin presents a sugar-coated struggle of a family enduring the terminal illness of a parent and then adjusting to his death, and the minimal amount of conflicts among family members robs a few of the characters of their credibility. Also, some of the elements fit together too neatly. However, these flaws are subdued by the author's skillful exploration of the fear, guilt and confusion that plague adolescents and young children experiencing the loss of a parent. This will be of interest to counselors and librarians, who will find it a fresh source of brief, read-aloud excerpts for group bibliotherapy, as well as to the intended audience. Cynthia K. Arrived quick. Good book. Passionate story about the death of a loved one through a child's eyes. Ann M. Martin used to write heartfelt books!

This book is written by Ann M. Martin. This is the story about a young girl who must face life when her father is dying. The family tries to make his last months enjoyable. Then they deal with heartbreak after his death. The family must move and deal with the changes and the grief. There could have been more conflict in my opinion. It is a fast read and a good story but not as realistic as I thought it would be. Sure, it toys with the different emotions after a parent dies and the world crashes around you. However, it’s too simple. I think it works well for a young reader and they would appreciate the simplicity more than others. I did cry but that is just me being emotional and having dealt with someone close to me being sick and passing away. Overall it’s an okay story and written well but could be more complex.

This is an excellent book, but do not start it if you're not in a good mood. It's definitely emotional.

If you mostly know Ann M. Barton through the Baby-Sitters' Club, this will be a lot different. However, it is very good, especially for young people who may be going through the death of a parent. She does a good job of showing how people grieve differently, and how that's okay. It also just has a bunch of moments that made me teary-eyed, including one that I felt was a little gratuitous - although it helped one character learn a lesson she was going to need later, it was pretty rough on the main character. I won't lie, it made me cry.

I read this book first when I was about the age of the main character, 13, and it really resonated with me. I read it again in my 30's after having lost my father, and I am again amazed at how realistic and well it is written. This is a great book on dealing with the death of a parent for teens and pre-teens to read. It does a great job of helping to understand what it is like to lose a parent, and also how much compassion and kindness can affect others. It is dated, written in 1986, but if you can look past that it is a wonderful read.

It reads like a diary

Having recently lost my father within a span of four weeks to an aggressive and fast-acting cancer, I remembered this book that I read as a child and decided to look it up. I am sad that this title is no longer in print. This book had so much emotional impact for me when I read it at the age of 12(?), long before I would ever know what it would be like to lose a parent 26 years later. I remembered that I cried so hard reading it that I had a bloody nose and actually bled on pages of the book! What I appreciate most about this book is that it depicts the lives of the O'Hara family before and after the father's passing. By allowing the reader to follow the protagonist through such a journey leaves you hopeful in the end--hopeful that even the most painful periods of one's life are just as temporary as our most cherished. I have decided to write this review over two decades after first reading it because I am amazed at how, as an adult and mother myself, certain books that I have read as a child still stick with me and impact how I continue on through my own life's stages.

I don't care how old you are but whether old or young, losing one of your parents is one of the hardest things you will ever do. Anne did a marvelous job in expressing her feelings about doing so. Thank You so very much for doing this.

Family, Friends, love and loss. A wonderful and tender struggle of the loss of a family member. Everyone heals and copes with loss differently. This book shows all of this. The story is funny, sad and bittersweet, I enjoyed it very much.
