Editorial Reviews

Review

Fons has cobbled together a delightful book of instruction for making—and loving—quilts. Her quilts are “scrappy,” comprising little bits of fabric to create big (and hence time-consuming) bed quilts. “For those who want a quick quilt fix, this book will make an excellent coaster,” she jokes. Fons, editor of Quilty magazine and daughter of quilter Marianne Fons, backs her tops with grand swaths of yardage, and, unlike many quilt teachers, she shows those backs as part of the instruction package. The first part of her love letter to quilts covers “Theory + Practice,” with attention to fabric, design, and construction. She discusses quilts in this century, cotton broadcloth, and, in her straightforward writing style, why not to prewash fabric; she considers the “Patchwork Quartet” (cutting, sewing, pressing, ripping), as well as assembling and layering. Within “Finishing Up,”she often adds humor to directions, for example, after sewing and layering “Northbound”: “Crawl under for a long, deep sleep.” A dozen projects fill the second half, with romantic quotes added to the love lessons. (Publishers Weekly, 4/14/14)

From the Author

Hello, Reader:
This how-to book was written for quiltmakers, quilt admirers, hopeful quilters, quilters who seek real inspiration...and you. Plain old, extraordinary you.

Why do people make quilts? I stand by the theory that we make quilts for love, out of love, and with love, every time. "Make + Love Quilts: Scrap Quilts for the 21st Century" is a book that celebrates this quilt/love concept by offering designs for 12 original, color-curated scrap quilts to be centerpieces for your home. These quilts are big, meant for beds, and are each perfectly suited to take their place in your nest -- be it modern, traditional, or otherwise.
Clear instructions are provided; each quilt in the book you can make yourself. None of the patchwork is advanced and all is explained clearly and succinctly. There are instructions on how to make a quilt from first stitch to final binding. But alongside the schematics and the measurements is a touch of history, rich context, and warmth aplenty vis a vis quotes from lovers as diverse as Montaigne, Marilyn Monroe; even Nietzsche makes an appearance in this very special quilt book.
I sincerely hope this book serves as a jumping off point for creative types of all kinds, but of course and especially, for my fellow quilters. In a world of seemingly endless fabric options (welcome to the 21st century!) and designs aplenty, each one of us is capable of being an original creator. There are few activities more rewarding than creating an original quilt and "Make + Love Quilts" is here to help you do just that.
Piece,
Mary

I really enjoyed reading this book. I purchased it primarily because Mary Fons will be teaching 3 quilting classes I will be attending and this book is required. The writing is easy to read and flows nicely. I cannot say how great the quilt directions are as I do not take the class until mid. Aug. 2014, so I will update this review then. However, in looking over the instructions, I will say that based on similar designs, I have seen easier ways to cut and sew, but I want to see what she does in the class before I make a definitive claim here.

The book contains instructions for 12 different scrap quilts that all look interesting, and I plan to make some of those that will not be covered in the class I am taking. The color pictures are really lovely, and they show off the quilts quite well. The book includes many close-up pictures of the fabric and the quilting, which I particularly like, and Mary also includes pictures of the back of each quilt.

The first 35 pages (4-38) deal with what she calls "Theory and Practice" that are great for beginners and helpful reminders for experienced quilters. All the quilts in the books are for queen and king sized beds. As she warns in the beginning, these quilts "will stubbornly refuse to be finished in a day."

Love this book! And I'm speaking as someone who reads a lot of quilting books. There are so many books out there, yet Mary offers a fresh perspective that I haven't read elsewhere. The projects are gorgeous and I have several on my wish list already. In addition, she gets book basics right - great pics of the entire quilt, the entire back, and the quilt in use. Why doesn't everyone do this? Mary loves quiltmaking and quilters + is a true expert in the field. I am very happy with the purchase!

I was so excited to order this book, and it did not disappoint! I love love love Mary Fons' writing style. I have quite a few quilting books, but this is the first that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I appreciated the descriptions of her inspiration for making these beautiful quilts, and I even learned a couple of quilt construction tips I didn't know. I had never even considered making a bed-sized quilt before, but this book has made me want to get to my machine right now and make a beautiful quilt for my bed that my husband and I can cherish! One more quick thought: I appreciated that many of the quilts aren't feminine looking it can be hard to find quilt patterns that will appeal to both men and women, but this book is full of them!

I'm a young quilter, though I have been quilting for a long time. Initially I checked this book out from the library - then decided it needed to be part of my own personal library. I like these patterns a lot, and Mary's general philosophy of quilting. I also prefer making big quilts that can be used on beds (all of the patterns are for bed-sized quilts), and the styling and photography is fresh and interesting. I hope to make a few of these soon, but in the meantime, the book will be good inspiration to flip through.

I love this book so much that I can't shelve it! I have read it cover to cover, re-read bits and pieces or Mary Fons' writing, admired and coveted after the quilts inside, and finally decided I'm making each quilt in the book when I couldn't decide on just one! This is one of those books that you can really READ! It's not dry and boring, but fun and spritely! I love it! I can't say enough how much I love this book! I can't wait to try my hand at these great quilts to make love under . . . ;-)

I love this book... realistically I believe that I would make, use and love most of these quilts. Mary has great style, taste and a natural flair that she very comprehensively shares with her readers.

My copy of your book (finally) arrived today. I am very happy; now you know that I hate to be effusive, so that is high praise from me.
I showed Whisper (The name of a lovely white and neutral shaded scrap full sized bed quilt) to my husband and he said "I like that" ... and he is happy for me to make it.
(It may be the first quilt ever to grace our marriage bed and we have been married thirty years).

That's as good as it gets, in our house.

I love Mary Fons and I love quilting, so i thought this book would be one of my favorites. It is just okay for me. Her designs are nice, but nothing jumps out at me and screams 'make me!' I have seen a lot of her designs and quilts, and I guess i just expected more from someone so talented. I am happy to have it as part of my quilting book collection, but I don't see myself making any of the quilts in this book any time soon.
