Great biography of the man and a look into the operations and politics behind one of the most secretive organizations of WW-II. Nice selection of photos that lets you see Gubins from his childhood to latter days. If you are into WW-II and especially the secret squirrel organizations this is a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gubbins ...this Man had a gift of creating something from nothing and then picking the right people to make it work
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 13, 2017
The multi-talented hard working man who kept S.O.E. up to scratch asnd supplied on the cheap with a core of gifted enthusiasts manufacturing superb modern explosive equipment from it's own armaments factories who used them to mine and block for weeks the vital water network of the Rhune. and the show on the road with supplying all kinds of equipment to resistance movements of all colours and shades of opinion all over Europe who used what he provided to prepare a truly mighty shock for the German Forces in France when D Day arrived. He did this wondrous balancing act while his S.O.E organisation were looked upon as amateurs and constantly decried in the corridors of power by the real amateurs .. the calcified blimps of the military establishment and the clueless chinless wonders of the Foreign Office.

4.0 out of 5 stars A book worth buying

Certainly an intereting and well written book, well researched. Considering the difficulty surrounding accessing metrerial on such a secretive subjet it would be forgiven if the result were a dry read, The writer therfore has to receive credit for bringing the story to life and realting it in an interesting and readable way. For me the only real downside is the lack of an explanation as to the terminology. Just what does CD stand for ?.

Captain Basil Leader
1.0 out of 5 stars Huge and unexpected disappointment
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 30, 2017
An exceptionally 'dry' account, written with cumbersome sentence construction and concentrating on the myriad political struggles that befell SOE and very little of Gubbins himself. The account of Gubbins is at odds with the description of him as a man and leader as outlined in Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare by Giles Milton. It was after reading his book that I was prompted to buy Gubbins and SOE but it is clear that the writers, though extremely thorough, even pedantic, were primarily concerned with putting complicated facts before the reader, in which case buyers may prefer Professor M. Foot's History of the SOE.
