Although I've never been much of a fan when it comes to paranormal fiction, I do like a good story and the way it is told. And that's what you get with Larry Deibert's Fathoms: A Novel of the Paranormal.

As one reviewer already pointed out, the characters in Deibert's fiction are ordinary folks caught up in extraordinary situations. I would like to take this one step further and point out that this is one of Deibert's major strengths as a writer. He comes up with these interesting story lines and then has fun telling the story. And that's what makes a good story. You keep on reading, engrossed in the story and the characters because everything does seem so real.

If you like a good story, a good ghost story that is, I recommend this book.

This story pulls the reader into a mind bending situation. Grandpa vanished at sea during WWII aboard the USS North Carolina, and now in 2014 his grandson goes to visit the ship, which has been turned into a museum. The reader is kept guessing as two parallel stories unfold. In one chapter, the sailors are manning their guns aboard the USS North Carolina far out on the Pacific while Japanese ships and planes attack. In the next chapter, it's 2014 and the grandson is aboard the ship/museum and he's seeing ghosts while channeling his long-lost grandfather. All along, the reader keeps picking up clues about the inn keeper, the blind lawyer, grandpa's lost gold and the sea bag that came home to Grandma over a half a century ago. If you are as much of a nut for ghostly sea stories as I am, then you might give this story a try.

Larry Deibert has a knack for the paranormal. Much like his novel, The Other Side Of The Ridge, this book also captures ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events. The author knows how to keep the reader's interest, and he knows how to keep them in suspense from the first page to the last. A great story with a wonderful ending. Congratulations Mr.Deibert for another fascinating read.

Good use of history and real locations to tell a story of the supernatural.

Fathoms by Larry L. Deibert is a well-crafted supernatural thriller focused on events surrounding the demise of Al Pederson aboard the battleship North Carolina during World War II. His grandson Brandon and wife JoAnne set out on a quest to find out what happened to him over a half century ago, and it leads them on a supernatural journey in encountering the ghosts of the past. Al’s widow Eleanor joins Brandon and JoAnne in Wilmington, Delaware in their search for truth. They cross the paths of those in the physical world and the spiritual realms in their quest for justice, and find their own lives compromised along the way.

Deibert uses his ‘been there done that’ acumen in presenting the narrative, even including the real-life Laura Beck in the storyline. The tenacious patrolwoman teams up with Lieutenant Marvin Greene of the Southport Police Department in following up on the Pedersons’ leads. Only the investigation stretches as far as Kashima, Japan where Yoshiro Nagata discovers the final resting place of Al Pederson. Stirring up the ghosts of the past comes with a price, and soon cancer patient Larry Scott becomes suspect when it is found he was a shipmate of Pedersen’s harboring a grudge. Yet a near-fatal car wreck nearly claims the lives of Scott as well as Eleanor and JoAnne. Will Brandon be the last man standing when the truth is finally told?

Pick up a copy of Fathoms by Larry L. Deibert. It’s an intriguing read you won’t want to miss.

This was my first experience of a paranormal thriller so wasn't sure quite what to expect, but must say I throughly enjoyed 'Fathoms'. The storyline was good, and the final revelation of the man behind the strange goings on on board the old battleship came as something of a surprise. My one small criticism would be that I would have liked to have been told more background information on the characters, and how they came to have their ability to interract with the departed. I think this would have added more depth to the story and given the reader something with which to identify, and made the central characters more 'human'. Having said that, this didn't detract from the overall quality of the story telling, and the link from present to past was skillfully manitained by the author. His knowledge of history and the descriptions of the wartime scenes on board the ship came across with a reality and a pathos that made the reader feel for those who served in these great leviathans of war during a time of intense conflict. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable read, and an author I will definitely read again. Well done, Mr. Deibert.

This fast-paced paranormal read was a fun ride. Author Larry Deibert weaves a modern tale filled with twists and turns that are nothing short of a ghostly rollercoaster romp.
In this novella, the pace seems to quicken as each page is turned. The reader has little time to take a deep breath or relax before the next thing goes bump during daylight and darkness.
Larry Deibert creates a fantastical reality by making his main characters believably human and alive...even his ghost show signs of living.
    This was an enjoyable read.
    Well done Larry Deibert!

Fathoms is a well written book by author Larry Deibert which immediately pulls the reader into the midst of supernatural and paranormal! From page 1 I was drawn in as a dead grandfather's spirit uses his grandson to make things right! A feel good ending made it complete!
