You and I are living in one of the greatest times in history. Take Terrys counsel and apply it to your daily life. You will be able to go to places you never dreamed possible. --Mark Victor Hansen, Co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul
Jumpstart is the perfect title for this cornucopia filled with essential information that writers need more than ever to succeed. His easy-to-read, generous advice comes out of his passion for helping writers and his decades of experience. Jumpstart will enable new or published writers to kick their career into high gear. I learned a lot from it. --Michael Larsen, AAR, partner, Larsen-Pomada Literary Agents; author of How to Write a Book Proposal and How to Get a Literary Agent
Terry has years of experience in traditional publishing makes him uniquely qualified to write this book. The 3rd paragraph on page 61 is worth one hundred times what you will pay for his book and I recommend you buy two copies: Buy one for you, and one for an author you know whom you feel has lost hope in their ability to promote their book. --Alex Mandossian, author, trainer and CEO/Founder of Heritage House Publishing

- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2015I am new at this process but Mr. Whalin gave me a great outline and some great tips to get me started writing. This book gave me the confidence to start.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2011Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams: Insider Secrets to Skyrocket Your Success by W. Terry Whalin, is a delightful collection of inspiring, true stories combined with powerful yet easy to implement marketing strategies. In his words, "Through the pages of Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams, I'm giving you a window into my own experiences in this market, combined with my practical how-to write information about the writing world."
Typically, the first time I read a nonfiction book I will skim through the book to see what catches my attention. I'll make notes and then go back to reread each section in detail. In reading Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams I often forgot that I was reading a nonfiction book. It is highly entertaining and is like reading a novel. I was riveted and read each section, in detail. Each chapter includes two personal application sections. The Dig Deeper section provides recommendations of additional resources, such as books and Internet sites, while the Awaken Your Dreams section asks a series of self-evaluation questions to help you make personal use of that chapter's material.
I had the good fortune to interview Terry on a live conference call. Members of my author community loved the interview and one of our members, Chuck from Florida, shared that he read Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams and applied the section of branching out and trying different outlets for his writing skills. This has increased his self-confidence in ways that he never thought possible!
Terry tells the story of one publisher that received 6,000 unsolicited manuscripts over the course of a year. Their staff reviewed the manuscripts and of the 6,000, they published zero of the unsolicited manuscripts. He goes on to share specific strategies for building relationships, so that someone is expecting our manuscript as a way of getting our foot in the door!
There's another story about a woman who had a book deadline she was trying to meet. In order to find quiet uninterrupted time to write, she sets her alarm for 3:00 A.M., because in her home that's a time when she can have peace and quiet and not worry about anyone or anything. I found this encouraging because I often set my alarm for 4:00 a.m., for that same purpose.
Terry shares that a powerful way to gain skills in becoming a successfully published author with a growing audience of people who want to buy your book and attend your programs is to learn from those that come before us. We can certainly apply this advice to this very book, a masterpiece in its own right. My favorite chapter was on engaging the marketplace. I especially enjoyed the section on online marketing, since that is a primary area of interest to me. Terry takes you through a wide selection of online marketing practices and provides you with strategies for each.
I highly recommend this book, not only as an enjoyable read, but as a practical how-to guide for achieving your publishing dreams.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2015Written by an experienced publishing insider this book will take you through the steps you need to take to become a better writer and get yourself published.
The book covers all areas of the writing and publishing process. It is easy to read, very well written, well laid out with handy tips and references to more information at the end of each chapter. I am sure I will refer to it again and again over the years.
I originally learnt the process of editing the hard way and could not have got through my M.A. without having someone review my work and suggest changes that were difficult to take on board. Ultimately this was a rewarding process. A couple of years on, I now enjoy writing and have started a blog simply for the pleasure of writing and putting it up for public view.
I was therefore delighted to received this review copy in a Goodreads First Reads draw. It showed me how to develop my blog and gave me some very useful tips that I would not have otherwise thought of. It emphasised the importance of editing and having someone you respect review your work before sending it off.
The author, Terry Whalin, writes with a generosity that clearly shines through. He adopts a pay forward approach, whether in giving advice, recommending other authors books or useful websites. He makes excellent suggestions as to how you can get yourself noticed and remembered.
Terry demonstrates that writing is a craft to be developed. If writing is viewed as an ongoing process you can remain open to making opportunities and taking advantage of any offers that may come your way. He offers advice on how to stay focussed on your goals, handle rejection, explore different avenues whilst developing your writing, reviewing and editing skills.
He explains how actively engaging in these processes helps you to make contacts and to learn what editors and publishers are looking for. Ultimately I do not know where I will take my work, but whether you are already published as an author, just starting out, had articles published or are writing a blog, this book will be useful.
