British Warships in the Age of Sail, 1714–1792: Design, Construction, Careers and Fates Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

The 2nd volume in this comprehensive naval history details the design and employment of British warships through the 18th century.

The Hanoverian dynasty that came to power with the accession of George I in 1714 inherited the largest navy in the world. In the course of the century, this force would see a vast amount of action against nearly every major navy, reaching a pinnacle of success in the Seven Years War only to taste defeat in the American Revolution. This superb reference book outlines the service history of every ship that fought for the Royal Navy in the great wars of the eighteenth century—well over 2000 vessels.

The book is organized by Rate, classification and class. The technical and building data of each ship is followed by a concise summary of its career. This includes commissioning dates, refit periods, changes of captain, the stations where they served, and details of any noteworthy actions in which they took part.

It will enable anyone to follow up a casual reference to any warship, and will provide the researcher with a solid core of information on which to base further study. With its unique depth of information, this is a work of the utmost importance to every naval historian and general reader interested in the navy of the sailing era.

From an American point of view, it is helpful to know facts about the British Royal Navy in the American Revolution and the years before it. This book is as complete a view of all the British naval ships of the period as can be assembled, and the information it contains has been sought by researchers for a long time, so this book is extremely useful for that small niche of people.

Excellent reference source laid out in an entirely useful and presentable manner.
A good base for any additional information as it turns up. Couldn't be any better.

The book is good. It is complete and wide. But, due to the large number of ships that the book refers to, the information about each one is so summarized. In other words, the information about each ship is little. If you want, for example, several information about a specific ship, you'll have no more than few lines. But if you want a general view of the ships in the period 1714 to 1792, this is the right book for you. Because it works like a dictionary of the ships in this mentioned period.
Perhaps this book might have the "Look inside" resource. Or, at least, an image from the back cover.

Très complet et informatif, une excellente histoire de la Royal Navy de la période, juste un peu dommage qu'il n'y ait pas plus de plans de navires.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthy Kindle experiment

A thoroughly excellent book, but somewhat limited by kindle format (large line drawings etc). It is usable on a big-screen pc, and is an excellent book, so I will have to save the pennies for the (expensive) physical book. A worthwhile experiment, nevertheless.
