Depth of Field (A Pippa Greene Novel Book 2) Kindle Edition
Two weeks in New York City should be the time of Pippa’s life: she’s attending the prestigious Tisch Photography Camp. But what should be fourteen unforgettable days of bliss turns into chaos when her one and only nemesis, Ben Baxter, proves to be surprisingly more complex than she could’ve ever imagined, and her Tisch mentor, a renowned photographer, seems to have a lot more to do with her parents’ past than anyone wants her to know. Is Pippa out of her depth?
Picking up where she left off in The Rule of Thirds, Pippa Greene returns in Depth of Field, a story full of the same heart, comedic touches, and romance that made readers fall in love with Chantel Guertin’s charming YA series.
“Amusingly honest . . . Frothy yet engaging romance with a snapshot of the photography world to add color.” —Kirkus Reviews
“Pippa is an appealing heroine and this will find readers.” —VOYA
“Tight plotting, vivid characters, and an underlying thread of photography know-how make Depth of Field a smart and stylish read.” —The National Reading Campaign
“Guertin truly inhabits the world of a talented 16-year-old who, in spite of self-doubt, faces the world head on. And if the story is one that has been told many times, many ways, Guertin’s approach to it is creative and new.” —CM: Canadian Review of Materials

“For some strange reason, having a female protagonist almost always means more girls than boys will read a book. The subject matter in Depth of Field is also likely to appeal more to female readers than males. CHAPTER 1
THE PLAN
1. Go to NYC! For the first time in my life! (Aside from the 72 hours I lived there after traveling down the birth canal — TMI? probably — and being born, but I was 0 — 72 hours old, so I don't remember much. Correction: I don't remember anything.)
2. To Tisch photography camp! Yes! Because even though Ben Bastard (a.k.a. Ben Baxter) came first place at Vantage Point this year by using my photos, I came second!
3. Ignore Ben Baxter because there will be 22 other students there from the East Coast. And ...
4. There will be Dylan! A.k.a. Official Boyfriend. (Or OB, as Dace is now calling him, which makes him sound like a feminine hygiene product.) Dylan's going to work for his uncle, the Manhattan-based concert merchandise mogul, and totally see the ins and outs of working in the music industry. And meet a ton of bands. Maybe even pitch his own music to a record producer? Pipe dream, probably, but then he could forget about college — what Harvard? — and move to New York, with me (if I get into Tisch for college of course, small detail). Bottom line: Dylan + me + NYC = pretty much as awesome as it gets.
5. And Dace! Who's coming along to find an agent and start her path toward becoming the next Cara Delevingne. Minus the drug scandal.
6. So, in sum: 336 Hours. 1 Big Apple. 0 Rules.
THE REVISED PLAN
1. Go to New York alone. Why? Because:
2. Dace's mom decided that the likelihood of Dace becoming the next Cara Delevingne with the drug scandal was possibly greater than her becoming C-Diddy without. Or that all she'd end up doing was shopping. (Likely.) And that algebra was more important than all of the above. (Debatable.) And:
3. Dylan isn't coming either. Turned out Dylan's uncle isn't going to be in NYC because he's going to be on the road managing merch sales for the Cherry Blasters. Feeling guilty, maybe, about kiboshing Dylan's NYC trip, he offered Dylan the chance to join him and the Cherry Blasters on tour. And Dylan took it. (Obvi.)
4. So now I'm going to be in New York WITHOUT my BFF or my OB. And instead:
5. Stuck in New York WITH the single person I despise most in the world: Ben Baxter.
"I have to say, for someone who hasn't stopped talking about Vantage Point and Tisch and New York for, like, months, you are totally missing the point right now," Dace says, winding a section of my hair around her new five-attachment curling wand. It's the kind without the clamp, which gives you great waves, only you have to wear the glove or you'll burn your fingers off, which is why Dace is curling my hair for me while I moan. It's late Saturday afternoon and we're in my room — me on my desk chair, Dace standing behind me.
"I'd like to feel sorry for you," she says, "but I don't think I need to remind you that I'm the one who's stuck in Spalding, while you're in the greatest city in the world. Even your emo boyfriend is traveling across the East Coast with one of his favorite bands. So can I get a little pity party over here, please?" she says, making sad eyes at me in the mirror.
I laugh. "OK, OK. You have a point."
"Aaaaaand you're done. Shake it out." I flip my head over and shake my head as instructed, then flip it back again. Dace smoothes it and nods her approval just as the doorbell rings.
"It's your big night," she says excitedly.
What she means is it's my final date with Dylan pre-departure. He's planned something — no idea what

- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2015I flew through this book. That's funny, since I felt the ending got rushed for a second, but not long enough to mar the story.
This book was a total love story for me. I was rooting for Ben and Pippa from the get go, forget Dylan. Yeah, it seems a little heartless to say, but if you read the story than you'd probably end up feeling the same way too. Again, this is funny since the last story I hated Ben. Seriously.
Great writing at work. First you hate a character, then you love them in the next book. That's real development at work. Takes a talent, especially for a voracious reader like myself.
Can't wait to get onto book 3 now!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2015I'm really glad I got the chance to get back into Pippa's world. Much like The Rule of Thirds, Depth of Field is a short and sweet read that has a little more going on than you originally think. In fact, DoF takes it even further, which made it a great read about a girl finding her place - in more ways than one.
There are two major plot focuses in this story and they intertwine perfectly. Pippa is in New York for the Tisch Photography Camp to pursue her passion. What she finds there in her mentor is a lot more than just some photography tips, though, as he has a very interesting and unexpected tie to her parents' past. I loved reading the parts about the Tisch camp (and the NYC setting was so fun, though I could have done with a little less of the constant street name dropping) because Guertin made their assignments fun and interesting but also gave room for character development within their structure. The biggest impact on Pippa, though, comes from getting to know her Tisch mentor, David. A college friend of her late father's, David holds a lot of secrets about the past that he shared with her parents and while Pippa goes in looking for a way to connect to who her dad was in college, she gets a lot more than she bargained for when she uncovers one of David's - and her parents' - biggest secrets. This was a great twist and I think Guertin played it out in a smart and impacting way. For a short book, the plot really moved well and kept me interested and invested.
The characters really help Guertin's story shine as they feel quite realistic, if slightly dramatic on occasion. Pippa herself continues to be an interesting and very real main character. She certainly makes mistakes but at least she tries to learn from them. Honestly, I think that's all you can ask of a teenager. She came alive in DoF much like she did in The Rule of Thirds and seeing her grow here - learning to forgive and mature and come into her photography even more - was wonderful. Her best friend Dace, while not present for most of the book, still has her moments and proves once again to be a fantastic friend to Pippa. I hope to see more of her and more of their friendship in the next book (and I'd love to see Pippa support Dace through something since Dace is always there for her). The new boyfriend from the end of TRoT, Dylan, isn't in DoF much either, which I was bummed about, but this let he-of-questionable-character Ben Baxter have his moment in the spotlight to show Pippa who he really is. I very much enjoyed seeing him become much more three-dimensional in this sequel and I'm interested to see where he goes from here. Pippa better sort out her feelings!
With a cliff-hanger ending that leaves Pippa's and readers' hearts on the line, I'm definitely looking forward to what should be an intense third book for our dear main character. Anyone who is looking for some quick and fun reads but still wants to find a reason to get invested in a story and a character's journey need look no further than Guertin's Pippa Greene series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2014I really enjoyed this book and read it in one day.
Pippa Greene is named after the city of Philadelphia. She never thought that was weird even though neither of her parents were from Philadelphia nor had either of them ever been there.
She loves photography and has an amazing boyfriend Dylan. Pippa gets the opportunity to attend a prestigious photography camp for two weeks over the summer in the hopes of eventually getting into the Tisch Photography School after high school graduation in a year. The only problem is, Ben Baxter is also going to this camp.
Pippa knew this would be a life changing experience, but she never expected her life to change in quite the way that it does over those 14 days in New York.
This was a great read. I haven’t read many contemporary novels, but I’m happy that I chose this one to review. This is the second book the Pippa Greene series and I haven’t read the first one yet, but I will definitely be looking into it now.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2014Disclaimer: I received a print copy from ECW Press in exchange for an honest review.
I too have dealt with the death of my father, so I related to Pippa's emotions and found Guertin's descriptions of her grief refreshingly understated. I predicted the story's major plot twist, but its fallout was compelling. The romance aspect was what didn't ring true to me, since Dylan and Ben are both relative ciphers here and I didn't find Pippa's reactions to them (detachment and attraction by turns) entirely convincing given her situation. (Admittedly, I hadn't read THE RULE OF THIRDS first; there is some recapping, but this is not an ideal standalone.) I enjoyed the city and photography studio settings, and would have liked to see both played up a little more. Thanks to the cliffhanger, I am curious to see how things play out for Pippa in volume three.
