Immortal At Sea (The Immortal Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 137 ratings

"if you’ve been around for long enough, you’re bound to experience a few unpleasant things: fires, earthquakes, avalanches, volcanoes, sometimes all on the same afternoon. Boats, I can tell you from first-hand experience, sink. A lot. Sometimes it’s because whoever made the boat for you made a crappy boat. Maybe you made a crappy boat. There is also the occasional psychotically malevolent storm that doesn’t care how well designed your boat is. When you encounter something like that, and the thing you were relying upon to keep you alive ends up sinking, you really want to know you’re not too far from the safety of solid ground.

Oh, and here’s another thing to worry about when you’re in a boat: sea serpents."

--Adam the immortal

Adam's adventures on the high seas have taken him from the Mediterranean to the Barbary Coast, and if there's one thing he learned, it's that maybe the sea is trying to tell him to stay on dry land.

In
Immortal At Sea, the first adventure in The Immortal Chronicles Adam talks about what it took to make it back to shore safely, and why it's a bad idea to sail on a gilded ship.

This short story is a welcome addition to the adventures (or misadventures) of Adam, an approximately 60,000 year old immortal man. If you HAVEN'T read the novels about Adam, Immortal and Hellenic Immortal, you can start with reading this short story without being lost. And it will likely make you want to read those longer works. If you HAVE read the two novels, this stand-alone story won't disappoint.

One of the things I like best about Adam is how he always seems to pull a narrow victory out of the jaws of certain defeat. He does that quite literally and quite well in this short story, getting himself out of a nearly impossible situation through his characteristic quick thinking, and a lot of "blind" luck. Very entertaining.

I recommend this short story, and look forward to the other upcoming stories in the "Chronicles".

I binged through the Immortal series. No, it's not Dostoevsky, but it's good clean fun. Recommended.

Adam is old. Not a couple of centuries old. Not even a couple of millenia old. Adam's closer to 60k, though he doesn't look a day over 35. He's an immortal, and he has a lot of stories to tell. In this novella, we learn why Adam has an aversion to traveling by sea. After reading this, you can't really blame him. Seriously. It's creepy.

I loved the first two Immortal novels and am really looking forward to the third book in the trilogy, but it won't be released until October. So it was a nice surprise to learn about this quick hit. It's satisfying - for now - but I still want more. I hope the author will continue the chronicles even after the trilogy is completed. Adam is one of my favorite characters to come along in quite some time.

a lot happens in this story, but I didn't really care because the main character began as a cipher and ended as a rather repellent self-absorbed pragmatist. No compassion, no loyalty, no real humanity. He seemed interested only in preserving his own life, regardless of the damage others took along the way. Not an attractive character for me, so even though the story was well-written, I won't be following the series.

I liked this book, but I'm confused - was it meant to be a novel, or a short story? The author left me wanting more. The hero is a man who has lived through a lot of history.

The author is a good writer, with a good editing and proofreading team. The plot is very I good, and the characters are strong. The hero has a sharp sense of humor.

If you enjoy fantasy, or science fiction with a lot of action, adventure, history and humor, this is the book for you.

Unfortunately one of the weaker Immortal stories (so much so that I don't really remember enough of it from when I read it a couple of years ago to honestly talk about it). However if you are a fan of Adam and his adventures, and like the hordes of people playing pokemon - you have to have them all!

As usual, Gene Doucette never lets me down. Since the very first book, Adam - The Immortal has been one of my favorite characters to follow and I am thrilled to learn that ‘Immortal At Sea’ is the start to a longer series.

I love all of the Immortal series and this is a good short story about our trusty hero using his wits to get out of a tricky situation. It sits nicely within the main Immortal triology.
