This Can't Be Happening at Macdonald Hall! (Bruno and Boots Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 250 ratings

In the #1 New York Times–bestselling author’s first book, the troublemaking team of Bruno and Boots wages war—and school will never be the same.

The basis for the movie now streaming on TubiTV

Bruno and Boots are always in trouble. So the Headmaster, aka “The Fish” decides it would be best to separate them. Bruno must now room with ghoulish Elmer Dimsdale, plus his plants, goldfish, and ants. And Boots is stuck with nerdy, preppy, paranoid George Wexford-Smyth III.

Of course, this means war. Because Bruno and Boots are determined to get their old room back, no matter what it takes.

When I was a child, my mother read me these books and I loved them. Now, I am reading them to my children (ages 8 and 10) and they love them too. The amazing thing about this book is that the author wrote it when he was only 12 years old. Amazing! The later Bruno and Boots books get better and better as the author gets older.

I am not sure why Scholastic stopped printing these books. Sure, some technology in these books are a little dated but they are still great fun.

Every writer and reader of YA fiction should read this book.  Not because it's the best book in Korman's long career, but because it's the first.  And he wrote it when he was twelve years old.  Many publishers publish books by kids because it's a great media bonanza -- Korman was one of the few child prodigies who turned out to be a prolific and talented writer.  In this first book he introduces Bruno and Boots, two smart alecky kids who get into loads of trouble through the course of the novel.  The plot is simple.  Bruno and Boots get into trouble.  Bruno and Boots find a clever way to get out of trouble.  But the fun is in the humour and the light-heartedness of the book.  Korman obviously liked these two characters because he went on to write several more books based at Mcdonald Hall.

I loved this book when I read it in my youth and I just bought it for my kids. This book is hilarious and while pranks are played, no one is injured and all characters are shown to be multi-family. Even the stern principal has a sense of humor. This book made me laugh 30 years ago and still does. It is a timeless classic and a great way to get kids to read

I read many of Gordon Kormans early books when I was a kid 40 years ago, and loved them. I just decided to read his first book again, and at 57 I still loved and enjoyed it. Even though the book is for kids, anyone of any age will enjoy it if you like a fun innocent good time.

Hilarious first book from Gordon Korman. Boots and Bruno are best friends at a boarding school and they are very creative about causing trouble. This book is silly and a little contrived and perfect for kids who like books that make them giggle! My kids are grown now but this one stays on my shelf for my grandkids!

This book is his first, and I think it's among his best! I wish the series were still in print in the US, but any you can snag are very good. Not exactly life-changing, but always lighthearted and hilarious.
