- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2014A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:
'In this work, originally published in 1993, the Wilks, both British academics and Second World veterans, take a revisionist look at the role of British troops in Italy in the aftermath of the disastrous Italian reverse at Caporetto. They stand between the traditional versions of the events established in the immediate post-war period, in which the English and French claimed that only their troops saved the situation, while the Italians argued that no help was necessary. Although their concentration naturally is on British operations, they fill in the background to the events leading up to Allied intervention quite well, give a good, clear explanation of the causes of the Caporetto disaster, and an unusually good treatment of the largely overlooked Italian struggle that stabilized the front, with proper attention to the roles of the Austro-Hungarians and Germans in the crisis. The Wilks discuss the complex negotiations that brought Allied reinforcements, the politics of command and strategy, planning for further operations, and the final battles of the Piave and Vittorio Veneto. This is an excellent work, and at times almost amusing, as when the authors comment upon how in their accounts of the war in Italy all participants often omitted the contributions of the other side. A very valuable work, made available again.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Researched. Well Written. Easy to Read
Accurate accounts of the British Army's involvement in the WW1 Italian campaign are hard to find so this book should be a starting point for anybody interested in the subject. My own Grandfather was in the Italian campaign. As such I have become something of an amateur historian on the subject myself. Wilks' efforts to portray the British Army's deployment from a chronological perspective, supported by primary references in the form of British soldier's diaries, backed up by data from offical histories, leads to a terrific level of detail while being relatively easy to read. Of particular interest to me was the accounts of troops, 26 to a cattle car, being railed to Italy from France via the Modane Tunnel and the change in climate experienced from travelling under the alps one side to the other. This aligns perfectly with my grandfather's oral history of his transportation and allowed us to narrow down which army division he may have served in.
