British Destroyers A-I and Tribal Classes Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

The 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, then moves to an extensive photographic survey of either a high-quality model or a surviving example of the ship. Hints on building the model, and on modifying and improving the basic kit, are followed by a section on paint schemes and camouflage, featuring numerous colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings. The strengths and weaknesses of available kits of the ships are reviewed, and the book concludes with a section on research references—books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. This new volume deals with the classes which represent the whole inter-war development of British destroyers, from the prototypes Amazon and Ambuscade of 1926—the first new post World War I design—to the powerful and radically different 'Tribal' class a decade later. These ships formed the backbone of Royal Navy destroyer flotillas in the Second World War.

3.0 out of 5 stars Partly good, but dated

As usual for this series, the description of major aspects of the various destroyer classes is very informative. There is however not much in terms of operational history (which is to be expected due to the large number of units and the restrictions on the book volume), and the changes to the various types during the course of the war are again not described in any detail. As most of the changes were about radar equipment and weaponry employed, some more details (photos, drawings - whatever) on those would have been very helpful for the non-expert - if you don't already know about ASW equipment used by the Royal Navy, you won't know any more about it after reading this book.
Due to the early publishing date, none of the newer plastic model releases of the past few years, both in 1/700 and 1/350 scale, are even mentioned in the text.
Recommended for those looking for a first introduction into the subject. Not much help in terms of a guideline to model a specific unit in a specific time frame, which is typically the strong side of the Shipcraft series.

Very old book. Avoid it if you want to build a tribal as it has no details on the newer offerings available
