4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 1,653 ratings

A teenage girl faces her evil nemesis in the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland-inspired trilogy that “should sweep readers down the rabbit hole” (Publishers Weekly).

After surviving a disastrous battle at prom, Alyssa has embraced her madness and gained perspective. She’s determined to rescue her two worlds and the people and netherlings she loves. Even if it means challenging Queen Red to a final battle of wills and wiles . . . and even if the only way to Wonderland, now that the rabbit hole is closed, is through the looking-glass world—a parallel dimension filled with mutated and violent netherling outcasts.

In the final installment of the wildly popular Splintered trilogy, Alyssa and her dad journey into the heart of magic and mayhem in search of her mom and to set right all that’s gone wrong. Together with Jeb and Morpheus, they must salvage Wonderland from the decay and destruction that has ensnared it. But if they succeed and come out alive, can everyone truly have their happily ever after?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Alyssa may have survived the epic battle at end of Unhinged (Abrams, 2014), but things are still looking grim. Her mom is trapped in Wonderland while both of her love interests, human Jeb and magical Morpheus, are stuck in AnyElsewhere, a horrifying in-between world full of outcasts and mutants. Accompanied by her father, Alyssa must prepare to do final battle with the Red Queen while rescuing her loves. But when it turns out that Jeb and Morpheus have their own agendas, Alyssa is heartbroken by each in turn, leaving her unhinged as she enters the final ordeal. Though the story is convoluted and the writing overblown, this series has gained traction among teens. Fans are highly invested in the Morpheus-Alyssa-Jeb love triangle, and most should be happy with how Howard resolves the series. Librarians feeding a strong interest in goth-fantasy-romances may wish to take a second look at the trilogy. Otherwise, this conclusion is recommended only where the first books were popular.—Eliza Langhans, Hatfield Public Library, MA

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

A.G. Howard was inspired to write SPLINTERED while working at a school library. She always wondered what would've happened had the subtle creepiness of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland taken center stage, and she hopes her darker and funkier tribute to Carroll will inspire readers to seek out the stories that won her heart as a child.

When she's not writing, A.G.'s pastimes are reading, rollerblading, gardening, and family vacations which often include impromptu side trips to 18th century graveyards or condemned schoolhouses to appease her overactive muse.

The end is here Splintered fans, and it's all you could ever ask for! Ms. Howard continues to amaze me with her ingenuity and madness, and I never wanted to stop reading this final installment in the Splintered series. My mind was dizzy with the splendid wonder of the world Ms. Howard has introduced to us, and every single scene came alive. The writing was phenomenal, and the words flowed beautifully off the page. Get ready for a darker, different version of Alyssa, and prepare for the unexpected. Nothing is as it seems, and major twists are around every corner.

One of the best parts of these novels has always been the rich characters. Ms. Howard breathed life into these characters from the first book, but in Ensnared she goes above and beyond what she has set up previously. Every single character is nothing like we have known because of the events of the last novel, Unhinged. However, the events are not the only thing that have affected these characters. Alyssa has grown into a much stronger, darker version of herself. She has finally accepted her netherling side, and realized it is a major part of her life. Alyssa has blossomed into a true queen, one who is willing to go to any length to right her wrongs, and save those she loves....even if that means sacrificing herself. She is brave and true, and I feel that she made a satisfying choice in the end, for herself and for fans. Morpheus, that boy makes me love him so much! He still has his wonderful snark and sassiness, but you see a very different side to him in this novel. We see a person who truly loves Alyssa, and realizes that she is a strong, independent woman. And finally we have Jeb, who also has my heart (I'm very much like Alyssa in this and can't choose between them). Jeb has changed dramatically, and for awhile I was worried. There is something different when we see him again (I'm not going to spoil anything though), but you'll be screaming for the old Jeb to come back. Nevertheless, the development of each of these characters was amazing. Each one is incredibly relatable, and must go through extreme tests and trials to come out in the end.

The setting is wondrous and fantastical, just as always, but I truly felt the setting came alive in this novel. I felt I was right there with the characters, and I would give anything to be there. The romance is also a stand out in this book. I don't typically like love triangles because I find most times they aren't done properly. There have been maybe 1 or 2 love triangles that I have actually enjoyed simply because they were written beautifully. This book can be added to my list of love triangles I love. Both Jeb and Morpheus are perfect for Alyssa, as they each complement their respective sides in Alyssa. There are scenes that will have you swooning, and I think the way Ms. Howard went about choosing who Alyssa ended up with was both creative and fitting for the story. Trust me, you'll be happy.

This is a must read for fans of this series! It will not disappoint! With an exquisite setting, fun adventures, and amazing characters, you can't go wrong. I hope that Ms. Howard writes more novellas or a spin-off for this series (I don't know what it would be about), but I want to go back to this amazing world she has created. This is a absolutely amazing ending to this series, and I can't wait to read whatever Ms. Howard writes next!

    Happy reading :)

Ensnared was such a stunning and beautiful conclusion to the Splintered series! I started Unhinged and finished it in two sittings and then immediately jumped into Ensnared. I just couldn't believe that cliff hanger at the end of Unhinged and this book picks up a few months later.

Alyssa has decided to finally embrace her madness after her mother, Jeb, and Morpheus are taken away from her. She spends a few months where her mother once spent years. She practices her Wonderland abilities and forms a plan to get back what was taken from her.

I loved that Alyssa was finally able to embrace her madness and figure out who she is and who she wants to be. She grew a lot throughout the first two books and this time she learns the rest about herself. She even learns more about the Red Queen and her father. But through it all Alyssa doesn't give up. I enjoyed watching Alyssa learn how to use her new abilities and figure out her relationships with the people around her.

Jeb and Morpheus are both back and trapped in the same world...together. Jeb and Morpheus have such an interesting relationship and I enjoyed watching the two work things out. Jeb is not the same as he was when he was in the real world in more ways than one. His mindset is different and he is more upset and bitter with everything that has gone on in his life. While I understood where he was coming from and even felt bad for him, his attitude kind of got on my nerves at times. He was very upset with Alyssa and that's understandable but he didn't really want to hear her out either. In the end he does grow and come to realize who he really is and who Alyssa really is. He sees things from Wonderland's perspective and I love who he comes to be at the end.

Morpheus is such an interesting and complex character as well. He doesn't really change too much in his actions or thoughts but at the same time he kind of does. He starts to become a little more human in a way. He is, at times, hard to figure out because you never know what he is going to do or what he really means. He is still apart of Wonderland and definitely crazy but we start to see his affections for Alyssa grow as well as his thoughts for others. I loved seeing him interact with Chessie and hearing his love for Wonderland. His relationship with Alyssa grows because she is finally able to admit that she does share affection for him. And let's not forget about that future that was seen between the two of them. :)

Besides are familiar characters we learn a little more about the ones we didn't know too much about. Alyssa's mother and father for example. Her dad is so awesome and it is great to learn more about his past and the part that his family plays with Wonderland. Alyssa learns that she does have more family than just her immediate one. She also learns more about Red and it was interesting to see Red's reasons for her actions.

Ensnared was such an intoxicating, compelling, and suspenseful read! I cried tears of sadness and joy and I could NOT put this book down! I finished it way to fast and was sad to see one of my favorite trilogies over. The ending is amazing and scary all at once. There is action and romance and awesomeness. :) I absolutely loved this trilogy and I can't wait to see if Howard writes any other intoxicating books.

Wow...what and ending to this trilogy! I really loved this new and original part of the Wonderland realm and I most of all loved the development of Jeb, Morpheus and all the relationships. For me this was a very satisfying ending to the story and I'm already longing to return and start the adventure again with the very first book.
