- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2015As an avid reader of the Xanth series, I am predisposed toward reading anything of his. This book does not disappoint.at all.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2015This is Piers Anthony and he always talks about controversial subject matters in his novels, not to mention he was ahead of his time. Anthony however brings a thoughtfulness and maturity in his plots that it really makes you think and see things from a different point of view. The book's pace is a bit slow at times, but it's a great read. He writes about Reality TV before it was invented, the implications, the direction it can take in the future, the utter madness of it, and how real people can find each other in the madness.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2011I'm a big fan of Piers Anthony ever since I was a child, and I try to read all of his books if I can (except for Xanth, which I gave up on somewhere around book 25). I remembered his other erotic novels (such as Firefly and Pornucopia) being pretty good when I read them years ago, so decided to check this one out.
It starts off pretty good, with the game context reminding me greatly of the games in the sci-fi half of the Apprentice Adept series. However, I quickly lost interest, as the later chapters took place in completely different settings with completely different rules. Names are re-used for side characters, and we're told they're the same people, even though they are acting out completely different roles in different bodies (not that they had any memorable qualities to begin with). Even the sexy scenes, which are described in great detail early in the book, are glossed over in most of the later chapters. It probably doesn't help that the game setting itself isn't really concerned with the enjoyment of it, treating the act like a button you have to push in order to pass challenges.
I understood why when I got to his traditional Author's Note, where he admits that the whole book was just a place for him to toss his extra ideas when he couldn't figure out how to make them work as standalone short stories. It really shows. This is the same reason I gave up on Xanth, where each book only exists to string together the vast list of puns he is sent by fans every year.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2012how much can possibly be said about a piers anthony book? i have read every single book he has written (i hope i havent missed any) and this is just as good as the very first one. its no wonder he has been my favorite author for so very many years. all i can say is if you ever liked one of his book then you dont want to miss this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2013I grew up reading Piers Anthony. He has written many, many amazing novels...stories that pulled me right out of myself and into fascinating, imaginative worlds. I cared about his characters...and he even turned me on to advanced math. Also, I love reading erotica. So, I figured, why not? No. And NO. This was pretty awful. As other reviewers have said, the sex is ridiculously explicit, but it's written in such a simplistic, juvenile fashion that it didn't turn me on at all. And I didn't care much about the main characters, even though they were initially appealing. There was too much of this unsexy copulation going on. It was like pressing a button or sticking your finger in a hole...that's how artful it was. Also, that restaurant scene was disgusting. I can imagine what he was trying to do with it, but I barely made it through. It was somehow both absolutely revolting and predictable at the same time. I only finished it out of respect for the many hours I've spent reading his better books.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2013I have read several of Piers Anthony’s other books and I believe him to be an outstanding fiction or fantasy writer. Eroma was a bit on the odd side for me. The whole idea of a sexual video game viewed for entertainment seemed like a good idea but after reading Eroma my thoughts started leaning towards, “this is a bit weird”. So, be forewarned good storyline, good character development, but the concept is a bit weird.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2011I read a lot of Piers Anthony in my mid-to-late teens and so I thought I would see if I still enjoy his work 20 years later. Eroma might not have been the best test case. I am no stranger to erotica, so the adult material is not what bothers me, if you can call this adult.
The story revolves around a virtual reality game in which players compete in a series of sexually-themed challenges for a huge prize. The scenarios depicted are juvenile -- the sexual encounters depicted within the game so overly simplified as to be completely untantalizing. As a woman, I was completely put off by the decision of where the female avatar's trigger point was located -- on a real woman that experience would be painful, not delightful. I had hoped that reading page after page of repetitive encounters all barging straight for that unrealistic trigger would lead somewhere more interesting, but instead, the scenarios were ever more juvenile and idiotic -- to the point that even the imbicillic characters had to comment on it.
Oh right, the imbecillic characters: "Hi can you tell me how this all works?"
"Sure! You seem nice!"
"Wow, thanks you were so kind to me that I love you now!"
"Really? Gee, you're sweet and I pretty much love you too now and I'm going to do whatever you do!"
I'm not even kidding. If you think that sounds bad, don't bother with this title.
It may be that this is intended more as a work of satire rather than eroticism, but at just past the halfway point, I don't care to find out anymore. The two main characters have now been through a real life experience that was just as stupid and unsexy as the supposed game world, leading me to think it never gets better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Piers Anthony lets it all hang out.
There has always been an edge of sexual tension in Piers Anthony's work. It's one of his stock ingredients in the mix, and doubtless has added to the popularity of his many books. In 'Eroma' he has a go at soft porn. The writing style is familiar, as is the plotting (an elimination contest I remember having been done in a more elaborate and interesting way in 'Out of Phaze (Apprentice Adept)'). As with all porn, this book stands or falls (so to speak) on its effect on the male member. I give it 2 stars, but other readers might disagree. Very readable, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and hilarious
Loved all of it. Tons of laugh out loud moments. Lots of sexy ideas. Wish there was a sequel or series.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok but no it's not Xanth
I read it all and the story is OK, and I am only disppointed because until then I had only read books from the Xanth serie and I was expecting a sense of humour and play on words that is missing from this book.
It is however well written and with a hint of voyeurism....
Back to Xanth for me...
