Crush (The Karen Vail Series, Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 733 ratings

In the USA Today–bestselling author’s “addictive second Karen Vail thriller,” the FBI profiler tracks a serial killer through California wine country (Publishers Weekly).

In this follow-up to the standout bestseller
The 7th Victim, Karen Vail ventures to Napa Valley, where a serial killer has been crushing his victims’ windpipes and leaving their bodies in caves. But when the Crush Killer learns that an FBI profiler has joined the Major Crimes Task Force, the newfound attention emboldens him, and he sets in motion a plan that wreaks havoc on the town—as well as the task force. Although a sudden break in the case helps Vail zero in on the identity of the killer, she senses that something isn’t right. If she doesn’t figure it out in time, the consequences will be dire.

In a rousing climax that leaves readers breathless, and which
Publishers Weekly termed a “shockeroo ending,” Vail must pick up the pieces—and clean up the carnage left behind by the Crush Killer.

Meticulously researched during years of work with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, this high-velocity thriller from national bestselling author Alan Jacobson features the kind of edge-of-your-seat ending that inspired Nelson DeMille to call Jacobson “a hell of a writer.”

Crush is the first installment of a two-part story that concludes with Velocity, book three in the Karen Vail Series.

My literary career has been marked by a number of events, but none more significant than an accidental meeting 25 years ago. While researching my debut novel, FALSE ACCUSATIONS, at the Department of Justice's crime lab, I met FBI agent Mark Safarik, who was awaiting promotion to the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit--the one popularized by TV's Criminal Minds. We hit it off, stayed in touch, and Agent Safarik invited me out to Quantico to tour the FBI Academy, profiling unit, and Behavioral Sciences Unit. Thus began my immersion in the world of serial killers, rapists, bombers, and arsonists.

Seven years and several trips to Quantico later, my education had reached critical mass: I had countless hours of conversations with Agent Safarik and his partner, Agent Mary Ellen O'Toole; I edited four published FBI research papers on serial offenders and attended numerous FBI training courses; I shot submachine guns with the head firearms instructor at the Academy; and I parsed serial killer interviews with Agent Safarik. I felt that I owned the material well enough to use this knowledge and experience in writing my third novel, the first featuring FBI Profiler Karen Vail. Agent O’Toole provided prescient insight into what Vail’s experience would be like as a woman going up against violent male killers.

Vail had an explosive debut, bursting onto the scene in the national bestseller THE 7TH VICTIM. Sporting a vibrant personality oozing sharp wit, Vail is a woman bucking the odds in a unit geared toward men, someone who always means well but, like you and me, makes mistakes. She has fears, loves, and vulnerabilities--and despite being very good at what she does--suffers perpetual unease about the decisions she makes. Because lives are on the line. Errors prove costly.

There's little doubt that Vail has resonated with hundreds of thousands of readers because she's real. But at the end of the day, Karen Vail is a cop you'd "go through a door with." That's how law enforcement officers of all stripes describe a colleague you'd entrust your life to when bullets are flying. Not coincidentally, that's how the head of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers association described Karen Vail.

Vail also plays a key role in my OPSIG Team Black series, which features a secret group of operatives charged with protecting America’s interests anywhere in the world. But—they’re carrying out these missions black, meaning they’re on their own diplomatically and militarily; the US government won’t acknowledge any connection to them. This gives me tremendous creative control in developing a story, turning up the suspense, conflict, and action. Navy SEALs have commented that my OPSIG series accurately depicts the reality of the missions they undertake--something I take great pride in. My two-plus decades of research and training with law enforcement and the military have helped shape the stories I tell and the diverse characters I create.

So sit back, crack the spine--or click that button--and immerse yourself in the gripping world of "Alan Jacobson thrillers."

Note--Agent Safarik and I coauthored a personal safety book, which we’re giving away free on my website, alanjacobson.com. It'll help keep your loved ones out of the crosshairs of violent criminals--and nothing could be more important than that.

Just finished Crush which I read right after I had finished The 7th Victim. What an exciting story written by a talented writer.

I really enjoy how Mr. Jacobson writes. His antagonists can be extremely evil but are believable unlike some authors in this genre who almost cause these characters to take on a deity status. I love how the bad guy can be horrific in his compulsions but appear no different than someone you might pass in the grocery store.

I also enjoy the female character Karen Vail. She is a perfectionist but not perfect and the most negative on herself when she messes up. A. J. does an exemplary job showing how her gifts and her drive to succeed at her career costs her in so many ways.

I know there are many negative comments about the ending and I will certainly not give anything away. This is the age of serial writing plots/themes to carry through to the next "installment". I only really have bad feelings about this kind of writing when I finish and feel that I have lost minutes of my life that I cannot get back. Jacobson's writing does not cause me any of that "buyer's remorse".

I love the action and how he handles it. I love how I don't feel I have to rush and skim the action parts to satisfy my need to know what happens. He feeds this to the reader well. Dialog is perfection and I love how as a man he is able to demonstrate with professional credibility how a woman exists in a man's world.

Probably not necessary to say, but as soon as I hit publish your review, Velocity is being opened. I cannot wait....

The main character (Karen Vail) is somewhat obnoxious, but that works well as we also see that she doesn't like pissing off people--she just has trouble filtering what she is thinking before it comes out of her mouth. It's her New York attitude in full force. While she doesn't always finesse the situation, she usually earns respect for her talents over time. And she carries a Glock...which is most helpful during chases.

Yes, the plot has a few potholes, but the action and detail in the story smooths over those minor glitches. I appreciate an author who researches a story, and it's obvious that Jacobson understands profiling well enough that he even has a character who has only read the main books in profiling, which Jacobson names, and tries to act as an expert. (Yes, Jacobson created that annoying twerp that we have all had to work with.) Jacobson also provides detail about mobile wine bottling--that's the kind of detail that builds depth in a story as we learn along with the characters.

Some of the other reviewers are miffed as they don't think the story ended, giving it only one star and often tossing in a few choice words for the author. However, the main plot does end, but in the course of the book Jacobson develops new threads exemplifying how confusing investigations are, and a new situation develops that may not be related to anything that happened before. Yes, I'll have to read the next book. However, if I expected my plots to wrap up neatly, I'd have never moved on from The Berenstain Bears.

I read a lot of comments below that people were angry that the book just ended and you would have to get the next book to find out what happens. Who cares, when i was reading the book last night and i was on my last chapter i was so into what was gonna happen next. Then out of no where, the book ended and i'm stuck with this dumbfounded look on my face because i just couldn't believe it. But i loved the fact that it just ended and i would have to buy the next one. And I did it right away. The moment my book ended i went to the Kindle store and bought Velocity which i'm positive will be as good as any of the other novels he has written. The reason i love reading so much is because there is so much decription as to what is going on around you, and what people look like, and people's personalities, that i can create a scene by myself as if it were a movie playing in my head. And that is what i love about Alan Jacobson, is that he is very descriptive and i'm never left not knowing what is going on around me. Wonderful novel, very addicting and can't wait to finish Velocity.

Since I downloaded this book for free, I hate to say that it left me disappointed. However, that is just what happened. At first, I was intrigued by what was happening on Karen Vail's vacation in Napa Valley. I didn't realize that there was a previous book to this one and was confused about some references that were made to past experiences she had. I was able to get past those questions in my mind and continue on with the story. I found the formatting of the book to be very disconcerting with the double-spacing and quadruple-spacing, it was constant page turning on my Kindle with so little text on each page. So much time was spent on the wine making processes and then the computer technology sequences that I was bored out of my mind and skimmed through those pages quickly. I thought it was just a big amount of filler in the story. I hoped that it would all prove to be useful in the end. However, I came to find that there was no end to this story! I usually like recurring characters and will move on to the next book to another adventure. I have never had a book end in the middle of a story and want me to buy the next book to continue. I will not be doing that here. I also shook my head at the outcome of what happened at the gym. Wasn't the killer outside the gym last time watching them come out and then he turns out to be the person inside the gym as well? He can take down all of his victims with crushing blows of such powerful force but loses badly to a naked woman in a wet steamroom? Maybe it's just me. I started to feel that the story became more and more farfetched as it went along. Some parts were entertaining and thought provoking but the writing was like a roller coaster ride for me.

Would have been frustrating if I had not read Velocity first. But it would have been better if I had read #2 then #3 back-to-back. Good story though.
