Shepherd (The Metal Maiden Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 80 ratings

The second in a New York Times–bestselling author’s wildly imaginative series about the nature of consciousness, set on a planet of unusual animals.

When Shep participates in the student exchange program, he finds himself in the body of a man on a rustic colony planet. Then a native sheep comes to the door. It seems Shep must become a literal shepherd, to his dismay. These are very special sheep, deadly, telepathic, and precognitive, and their will governs.

They also recruit a Vulture, a Python, and a lovely Elf girl for a dangerous journey. Then things get interesting. Soon Shep is deep in adventure and love. But he can’t marry a native girl by proxy. Or can he? The most important thing he learns is to trust the sheep, no matter how wild it gets. Even when he returns to Earth . . .

This novella by a well known professional science fiction writer keeps you in suspense until the last page. It's a fast read, maybe that's why the price is so reasonable.

This is less a sequel to Piers Anthony's novella, "To Be a Woman," as it is a story set in the same time and world. This story involves a unique cultural exchange program wherein two people, one on Earth, the other on another world, settled by earthlings a long time ago, agree to swap their consciousnesses,so that each may learn something from the other's culture.
I'm not going to try to sum up the plot because it is quite improbable and requires more than a little suspension of disbelief. It involves the regular migration of the female sheep to the island of the rams for mating.
It is a fun and exciting journey with predictable results. This is a good story, not great, but a fun and quick read.

More than 40 years ago, Piers Anthony's works caught my imagination. While this novelette isn't a Macroscope in strength of content, it doesn't have to be. It entertained me and shared some ideas that strike a note. There are those among us, that do not value life, and would hunt Planet Jones' sheep, as they harvest elephants and whales. There is growing evidence pointing that whales and elephants are self-aware.

Definitely unexpected! Mr Anthony you have done it again! I picked up my copy and had the whole thing read in less than 24 hours, along with my 8 hours on the job, caring for our furry companions, and the house and myself.
