Tune Up Your Teaching & Turn On Student Learning: Move From Common to Transformed Teaching & Learning in Your Classroom Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

Two teaching experts offer methods for maximizing student comprehension in all areas of education—with extensive research and practical examples.

All teachers want their students to think, learn, and understand. In this helpful guide, veteran educators Dr. JoAnn Jurchan and Dr. Chuck Downing examine what successful teachers are doing—and
not doing—to achieve those goals. Often without realizing it, many teachers provide students ways to complete their assignments with minimal effort or comprehension. The problem is how to avoid the “TMI” trap—because Too Much Information can stifle critical thinking.

Tune Up Your Teaching provides clear and detailed methods teachers can use to raise the level of both thinking and learning in their classrooms. Written in a conversational style, Jurchan and Downing use concrete examples in all core areas of education. To clarify critical points, the authors include “He Said She Said” dialogues providing insight into their thought process.

Neither a “cookbook” nor a “one size fits all” solution,
Tune Up Your Teaching instead describes a research-based process that can be personally tailored by any teacher to her or his situation.

Editorial Reviews

Review

What I'm impressed with is that this book has a lot to think about, but it's a light read. So many books get mired down in the technical language that the message gets lost, or they're so boring no one finishes reading them--not this book! -- Dr. Marilyn Marquand, Retired Teacher, Site Administrator, and Science Specialist for the San Diego County Office of Education.

From the Inside Flap

This book reminds me that, although it may be frustrating at times to not have the answer always in front of you, it is definitely more rewarding when you've struggled with a difficult problem by yourself or with a group of peers and finally reach that "Aha!" moment. Not only do you remember what you learned much better, but you also learn how to think critically for yourself, which is ultimately one of the best things you can hope to achieve from school. - Hannah Youngwirth-Senior, University of California, San Diego

When you read this book, you might find yourself constantly nodding in agreement or laughing in enjoyment! Dr. Jurchan and Dr. Downing truly understand what it means to be a professional, reflective educator, and they effectively share what they have learned in over seventy years (combined) in education. I hope that this book truly is, as they write, a catalyst for some trail blazing in education.
- Sara Chai - Science Educator, Montgomery Middle School, Sweetwater Union High School District

Tune Up your Teaching and Turn On Student Learning by Dr. Juchan and Dr. Downing provides innovative and creative teaching strategies that is sure to engage students. The forward was very interesting and entailed genuine feedback from the authors to express their vision and direction for this book. It also offered useful resources to educators http://www.engageinthinking.com. The real life classroom examples were very helpful to comprehend concepts and ideas. Both the teacher and the student walk through the journey to transform together to enhance learning. The common activities and task throughout each chapter makes the book come alive through kinesthetic and visual interactions. These activities provides the readers a break from reading and time to absorb the newly acquired information and apply what they have learned. I also love the constant "he said/ she said" throughout each chapter. You are able to connect to a deeper understanding and draw your own conclusions from realistic view points from the authors. From there one can weave the strategies into their own unique teaching style to develop effecective teaching skills and independent thinkers. What more could you ask for from a book? Thank you Dr. Juchan and Dr. Downing for a great read and strategies that I can and will implement into the classroom!

I was able to "get through" this entire book with ease and interest. I am not one to read entire text books all the way through, and I typically prefer the "skimming" method. However, with this book, I felt like if I did not read each line, I was missing something either enlightening or funny, so I could not allow that to happen! Being a new teacher I am often bombarded with papers, handouts, and books on ideas and tools. I do my best to sort through them and pick and choose what I would like to apply to my teaching style/classroom. This book will be one I keep, and reread. There is a lot of beneficial and witty banter, and straightforward advice to help get you started, or even just to improve your teaching in general.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this one!

I am so lucky to have read this book before I got my long term substitute job. I read it after my student teaching experience and wish I would have had it before I started. When I am teaching, and the student is not understanding, I am tempted to just do it for them so they can see how to do it. But this book taught me that the students actually WANT and NEED to struggle and have a challenge in order to appreciate what they have learned. This book creates a unique metaphor for teaching and students learning that allowed me to understand why the students would want to figure things out on their own and why we should let them. There are so many useful tips in the book that I can't wait to apply to my own classroom! It is a fun, easy read that leaves you with many ideas to try!

When I first started teaching Earth Science, I was told, “Students are ‘consumers.’ They don’t think and don’t want to think. Give them a worksheet, and they will be compliant and get their work done. Drs. Jurchan and Downing have reawakened my passion to bring out the best mysteries of the earth sciences and help students wonder, experience the awe in this field, and expand the galaxy of their life-long learning as they engage the majesty of how the Earth works, came to be, and fits into the universe. As a second-year high school teacher, I highly recommend this book. The strategies and insights explained by Jurchan and Downing are immediately applicable to any classroom and offer a refreshing take on HOW students learn. Too often we as teachers are more concerned with what WE are saying instead of what THEY, our students, are doing. Through practical examples supported by strong academic scholarship, this book emphasizes the importance of creating a learning environment in which students gradually take more ownership of their own education. This is a must-read for first and second-year teachers, as well as any teacher who wants to re-energize their classrooms.

I found this book to be an excellent tool that has helped me build on my understanding of education as a whole and my philosophy as a new teacher. The various concepts in this book have helped me in my instruction and in guiding students in becoming self-motivated and efficient learners so that they may take "the training wheels off" and take control of their learning. Along with being beneficial to my development it was also a fun read and something I will hold on to for future reference.
