Statistics Topics Kindle Edition
This pedagogical book is more sophisticated then the web log, and colorfully weaves statistics topics into stories concerning everyday life issues. This topic is of greater importance with the growing demand for big data and an information revolution pushing their way into relevancy, by pouring over large heaps of data, but still wanting accurate and reliable insights as a positive objective. The topic is also of greater importance as nations seek to gain on their population's mathematical literacy in order to compete in this current century. The stories cover the nascent development of the field going back many hundreds of years from Asia, to the Middle East. Shows the later development in Europe of the most major theoretical constructs. And then continues all the way to these current applied topics: fickleness of modern U.S. elections, hot hand streaks in the markets, Flight MH370's disappearance. There are also tools to think about diverse things such as civil unrest in emerging countries, and Federal Reserve Chair Yellen's current rate strategy.
Statistics Topics' chapter topics are: probability theory, parameters, moments and correlations, stochastics, samples and errors, advanced confidence intervals, visual solutions, regressions, distribution fits, other topics and summary, and reference formulas with solutions.
Note that the Kindle version of this book has limitations in its ability to show mathematical symbols, which partially challenges that product. However I have gone through the Kindle version as well and mapped alternate letters as substitutes for symbols, and I also enhanced some of the graphics and tools (e.g., formula look-ups) to make both versions as pleasurable, as possible. While the full-capability paperback book has been ranked Top 1 to Top 4 in important science, and business research/reference categories and enjoyed in classrooms (graduate biostatistics, mathematical and business statistics, and analytics), depending on your needs, the ebook version (similar ranked in similar mathematics and statistics categories) offers readers a strong alternative and additional accessibility - at a low price. Also read by celebrity business CEOs, government leaders, and at least one Nobel laureate
Most of this book's income is being donated to philanthropic efforts. If the book price (print and ebook combined is nearly at cost) is unaffordable and you live in the U.S., then please e-mail me your city zipcode; if there are multiple needs from specific locations, then I will work with the local library there for you to get a copy onto their shelves.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2016I read this book as a refresher for the stats topics i had learnt as part of my engineering and high school education and the book did not disappoint. I was able to follow the concepts right away as the writing style is clear and lucid, coupled with the fact that most of the concepts are explained with real life examples which makes it very easy to relate whatever you are reading to practical real world problems rather than just being limited to equations and theory.
It would be very nice to have an appendix or a chapter at the end which explains the use of python (modules such as statsmodels, scikit-learn) for some commonly used concepts. This would be very useful because then the reader can implement some of the examples presented and explore them further. I understand this could be a separate book in itself but an introduction would certainly be a huge value add.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2019This isn't a critique of the author, who has all sorts of intriguing examples and concept in the book - it's a critique that anything that's not simple text gets horribly mangled in kindle form.
I think the author did try to make it work, but having to use roman characters in lieu of greek, and trying to read the formulas when separated from the text.... paper books are still the best for math, ironically. Amazon - look into making kindle better beyond novels!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2019There is an old adage: Lies, damn lies, then there are statistics. Salil clarifies this subject in simple english. Statistics books can be heavy in mathematics. Salil has written a book that is easy to read but doesn't lose any rigor of statistics. For someone to write a very technical book and not lather it with math formulas is not easy. It shows me that Salil has a true command of the subject. For someone like myself who is interested in statistics, I found many enlightening elements of statistics in Statistic Topics.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2017Anyone who's command of English is as poor as this guy's should have the humility to get a good editor. I get sick of sentences that don't make any sense. They don't belong in a book on a subject like this where each explanatory word counts. I mean, a person has enough of a challenge penetrating the subject itself without the added challenge and annoyance of stupidly nonsensical sentences. Besides that, his explanations are opaque and the whole thing is poorly written. The take-away for me is not to buy books by foreigners, or only with great care. This guy must have been affirmative-actioned into the lofty academic and govt. positions that he brags about--playing the non-white card--is the only thing I can figure.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2017The author's passion for statistical topics shines in this right-sized walk through of foundational domain notions. Given how accomplished Salil Mehta is in his field, it's worthwhile to read how his brain thinks through and communicates these ideas.
Unfortunately, many of the graphics aren't compatible with the Kindle app on mobile.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2014I am trying to read this since I wanted to refresh or re-understand some relevant topics covered in this book, but the author really made it very dense going (though I'm a layman I do have some background in these topics), even for topics where I thought I was reasonably conversant with, & the bad editing & formatting doesn't help either. I haven't finished the book, & will update this here if the book gets better, but I doubt it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2015The book is well written and explains all important statistical topics well. In my experience, statistics is a challenging discipline to pick up, and requires many hours of studying and practice to nail it down as an art. It always helps to have a guide that can take you through statistical topics step by step in order to make the learning process easier, and this is that guide.
Also what I appreciated is that the book further expands on each topic by providing comprehensive real-life examples. It always helps to have an example, because simply learning the topic will only give you a general idea of the lesson at hand.
All in all this is an excellent textbook taught by an experienced professional in the field, so you can't go wrong purchasing it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2019On one hand, the book contains some useful (albeit very basic) information on probability. On the other, it's very painful to read due to the author's style and inability to communicate effectively in English. It takes away from the flow of the prose as well as the accuracy of the information presented. Additionally, the author adopts an over-confident, snide tone from time to time, as if scolding the rest of the world for not being as talented as he is. Unfortunately, there are enough logical and typographical errors in this text that I have to call his level of practical intelligence into question.
Overall, I cannot recommend slogging through 150 pages of material that can be found elsewhere in a much more enjoyable and useful format.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
It presents some important concepts in a real-world fashion. Great for anyone that wants to do some serious statistics in any application.
