Editorial Reviews

Review

For sewists who find themselves daydreaming about picnics and splashing through a creek this summer, Long’s book will scratch that yearning itch. Her first collection of 20 patterns are all presented in a cheerfully vintage, farm-girl style, for which her book title perfectly captures the mood. There are plenty of simple, approachable patterns, all aimed at women, focusing on bags, skirts, and a few home goods projects. Just a glance at the "It’s a Cinch" obi-style belt will have readers scrounging through their fabric for an Amy Butler print or two. A duo of two simple skirts, the Cakewalk and the Sunny Day Skirt, make use of bright, cheery prints and an elastic waistband. In general, everything should be achievable by sewists with basic skills and might provide a brief break for skilled sewists who want to whip out, say, a few kitchen towels for friends. The guidelines section, which serves as introduction, is very basic, and the diagrams and pattern pieces provided aren’t very detailed. But nothing requires much in the way of precise skills, making this a great summer sewing volume. Full-color photos, pattern pieces. (Publishers Weekly, June 2, 2014)

Written by a 20-something hands-on seamstress and crafter, the projects in this book are modern but with a nostalgic vibe. The projects are designed to develop technical skills; some have bonus details to further raise sewing skills. (
American Sewing Guild Notions Magazine, Fall 2014)

Oh, just look at the cover! We can feel the wildflower-scented breeze as we are frolicking with these happy-go-lucky ladies, strolling the gorgeous prairie. For us Little House on the Prairie fans, this book evokes a feeling of contentment and playfulness. (And the great news is we can get our hot little hands on this historic charm without foregoing our mod cons, such as central heating!)Abigail Long's book features a fine chapter on sewing basics and some of her secrets. Subsequent chapters are filled with bag, clothing, and home projects. The photos are lovely, but for those of us who are - ahem - challenged by written-only instructions, there are detailed full-color diagrams, too. There are seven (!) bag patterns we can't wait to try with sweet girly names like Belle and KittyJo. The Maggie bag is nice and roomy, and features a fun, floppy flower. Clothing projects range from skirts to shirts to belts, and are perfect for a new garment sewist (not to mention they're breezy and very country-chic.) The Leeway Apron is sweet and simple, too. Definitely a book we want to stash in our log cabin! (

Just received my book. I'm a little disappointed in the fact that there's a clearance sticker(actually 2) stuck to the book for $3 and I paid $9.71. Seems a bit odd.

This is such a lovely, inspirational book. The picture-packed layout makes for delightful, just-fun browsing while the clear instructions will help even the newest seamstress. One of the best things about this book? Abi's creations are useful AND pretty! Instead of cluttering your friends' shelves with your homemade knick-knacks, these projects will add a sweet punch of "happy" to daily activities--anywhere from dishes at the sink to shopping at the mall, there's a project for everyone.
Great job, Abi! Write another!

This book is perfect for those who enjoy sewing but wouldn't consider themselves experts. The instructions are easy to follow and there are wonderful pictures to guide you all along the way. The projects are simple but so adorable! I know what my friends and family will be getting for Christmas this year...gifts I make using the projects in this book. ;-)
