The Man of Last Resort: Or, The Clients of Randolph Mason Kindle Edition

3.6 out of 5 stars 24 ratings

The second installment in this groundbreaking series reveals that crime does pay—if you’re a lawyer

In New York’s Plaza Hotel, a gambler, a Virginia gentleman, and a failed lawyer named Alfred Randal come together to form a three-man political machine. Rather than contend with Tammany Hall, they set out west to take control of the Arizona statehouse. Soon Randal is governor, the Virginian is auditor, and the gambler is secretary of state. Their reach absolute, their power unquestioned, the trio has only one problem: They have robbed the treasury blind.

To keep himself out of prison, Randal returns to New York to beg the help of Randolph Mason, a brilliant lawyer who never hesitates to help bad men escape justice. In these classic stories, America’s most dangerous legal mind assists all manner of liars, crooks, and scoundrels—proving once again that even a master criminal is only as smart as his attorney.

It is a delight to have the works of Melville Davisson Post available in affordable paperbacks. (Albeit in an oddly formatted independent printing.) In this second volume of Randolph Mason stories, Post uses an entirely immoral lawyer to expose defects in the law; each story includes references to, then, established case law precedents. (Post's and the then law's take on hedge investments is instructive.) Post was criticized for abetting "skillful rogues"; his defense, included in this volume, is alone worth the price. In fact, Post was an avant-garde 'white hat' hacker exposing flaws in the legal security system. Post was from the Virginias and his depictions of the people and culture are very interesting. He was wide travelled and his stories are wide ranging. His character portrayals are adept and his narratives nicely constructed, but his main concern is justice, morality, and the law - and the distinctions which make all the difference. He can be quite droll. Like Mark Twain, he was an unflinching man of his time and so some may find distress or offense in some of his language; i think he reveals the casual bigotry which cut across all segments of society at the time and helps explicate obstacles to our struggle for fairness and respect today. Here is my favorite quote: The unwritten records of business ventures and the reports of the courts are crowded with the record of huge schemes having for their ultimate purpose the robbery of the citizen...Enough have brought great fortunes to their daring perpetrators to appall that one who looks on with the welfare of human society at heart.

Please be advised that the contents of this volume minus the Preface are included in the first volume in this series, THE STRANGE SCHEMES OF RANDOLPH MASON, even though this is not mentioned in the information regarding the first volume. Since this volume was only 99 cents, and included the Preface missing in the other volume, I am going to keep it, but if all you are concerned about are the stories themselves, you have them all in the previous volume.

In an age where the criminal was the hero, Randolph Mason was the attorney of cunning. I especially appreciate the case cites at the beginning of each story.

Not one story but several about a lawyer used successfully as a last resort. The little book should be required reading for pre-law students as it is deadly serious but also quite tongue-in-cheek. Delightful read for anyone who enjoys good short mysteries.

Stories were very hard to follow. A lot of formal language that nobody ever uses. Couldn't even finish. Not what is was purported to be.
