The Polish Underground, 1939–1947 (Campaign Chronicles) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

This study of the Polish resistance movement chronicles the operations of various factions from WWII through the postwar battle for power.

The Polish partisan army famously fought with tenacity against the Wehrmacht during World War II. Yet the wider story of the Polish underground movement, which opposed both the Nazi and Soviet occupying powers, has rarely been told. In this concise and authoritative study, historian David Williamson presents a major reassessment of the actions, impact and legacy of Polish resistance.

The Polish resistance movement sprang up after the German invasion of 1939. As the war progressed, it took many forms, including propaganda, spying, assassination, disruption, sabotage and guerrilla warfare. Many groups were involved, including isolated partisan bands, the Jewish resistance, and the Home Army which confronted the Germans in the disastrous Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

Going beyond the Second World War, Williamson's graphic account chronicles the clandestine civil war between the Communists and former members of the Home Army that continued until the Communist regime took power in 1947.

Had Poland not been subsumed behind the Iron Curtain then its incredibly large and fierce resistance movement would have been far more widely known about. Sadly, it is now when most of the heroes who participated in the greatest resistance movement in occupied Europe have passed on that the story is coming to light in the English language. Williamson had already written 'Poland Betrayed: The Nazi-Soviet Invasions of 1939'. His knowledge of Poland and the Polish struggle is detailed.

Being of part Polish extraction I have for many years sought out those rare English language titles about Poland and its war effort, both about its resistance fighters (not just the Hollywood portrayed Jewish Resistance fighters) and its fighting forces serving alongside its Western Allies and the Soviet Forces. It was not only the Soviets who took Berlin - they had the Polish First Army there fighting along side of them. It was not only the British and Americans who bombed Germany. Polish bomber squadrons were there as well.

There have been far too many derogatory books written about the Poles, and most of these by Jewish authors. Some snide Germans are also dismissive and denigrating in their description of Poles. It is good to see another British historian join the likes of his compatriots like Norman Davies to engage in serious research and tell the Polish story. Poland also escaped the GFC and is growing into an economic success story. Many more people are becoming interested in its past, and that is a good thing. As they say, you can't keep good people down. Poland lives forever, and I am proud, as are many other Polish Australians, of having a Polish heritage.

Excellent account of a lesser known subject of World War Two. Highly recommended.

I found out quite a few things that I hadn`t realized went on at that time. I thought the book was well written and held my interest. Sometimes when you get to many facts thrown at you it can get a little tough to read but I didn`t find that to be the case with this book.

Interested reading, we'll researched. Quite long, this type of reading takes more time to read than what I prefer.

Great book for facts. names, dates, lists and thumbnail sketches of biographies of important players and methods of guerrilla combat and carrying out that combat. It however was much more academic in feel than I wanted. Indexes, glossaries, and definitions of terms and multiple acronyms wasn't what I needed. I am writing a book and my hero was going to be a Nazi and Communist guerilla fighter. I was looking for the human touch of personal stories. Not helpful AT ALL there. I have it three stars because it was well done academically on an obscure subject that needs to be told. More recent Polish history seems star-crossed. This book certainly heightened that impression. Hope this review helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read

This very recently released book on the Polish Underground is concise but detailed, well written and organized, and thoroughly referenced. As any study of this topic, this work covers the brilliance of the unique Polish underground state, the triumphs and the painful end result of allied appeasement of Stalin; effectively betraying Poland a second time. The book is an excellent reference for any reader interested in this subject, both academic and armchair historians.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and detailed account, especially of the post-war period.

A fascinating and detailed account. The incredible organisation and daring of the Polish Underground was amazing when compared with other clandestine WW2 organisations. Of particular interest is the history of such movements after WW2: the Russians and the Communists were shown up for what they were as no better than the Germans.
However some of the Polish accents are inconsistent or missing and there are misspellings of some German words, probably due to a bad original typed copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fills a Gap in the History of WW2 Resistance

An interesting book on a subject little known outside Poland.
For some reason, the author ends his account in 1947 and does not mention that resistance to Russian occupation continued long after that date with the last of the "cursed soldiers" being hunted down in the late 1950s.
