US 9th Air Force Bases in Essex, 1943–44 (Bomber Bases of WW2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

As part of the AHT series, the airfields and interest in this book are concentrated in a particular area in this case Essex. It covers the American air bases used by the Martin B-29 Marauders, P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs of the 9th USAAF Air Force during 1943-44 prior to their move south to France after the D-Day invasion on 6 June 1944.The airfields included are Andrews Field, Birch, Boreham, Boxted, Chipping Ongar, Earls Colne, Gosfield, Great Dunmow, Little Walden, Matching, Roydon, Rivenhall, Stansted, Wethersfield and Wormingford. This book looks at the history and personalities associated with each base, what remains today and explores the favourite local wartime haunts where aircrew and ground crew would have sought well-deserved entertainment and relaxation. Other museums and places that are relevant will also be described and general directions on how to get them included.

Good book to add with the 8th air force

Part of Pen & Sword's AVIATION TRAIL HERITAGE series, Martin Bowman's US 9TH AIR FORCE BASES IN ESSEX 1943-44 describes 16 bases in Essex County that were the home of various 9th AF units up to mid-1944. Those bases housed some of the 9th's A-20, B-26, P-47 and P-51 units that made it such a fearsome weapon in the Allies' arsenal.

Bowman describes the bases in alphabetical order - Andrews Field, Birch, Boreham, Boxted, Chipping Ongar, Earls Colne, etc. Most of the 9th units based in this area were bomb groups hence Bowman covers the 322nd BG, 410th BG, 386th BG, 416th BG, 397th BG, etc. along with a lone fighter group, the 354th.

Write-ups range from two to 20 pages. After brief histories of the individual base's creation and development, Bowman devotes most of the remaining pages to a combat history of the Bomb Group or Fighter Group assigned to that base followed by the base's eventual fate. The 9th's A-20s and B-26s flew medium-altitude strikes throughout the war and US 9TH AIR FORCE BASES IN ESSEX 1943-44 is replete with exciting combat stories.

The book is illustrated with 180 photographs of aircrew, aircraft, nose art, base scenes, air combat shots, crash sites, postwar development, etc. Photo quality is generally good.

Bowman's book has two weak points: no maps showing base locations and no index.

If you're an air war enthusiast, US 9TH AIR FORCE BASES IN ESSEX 1943-44 should be of interest. It's a comprehensive, well-illustrated guide to some hard-fighting American air units of the ETO. Recommended.

This is an excellent little book , which deals very well withthe main 9th Air Force bases in Essex and also has lots of references to non airfield sites, such as the White Court Hospital near Braintree.Despite there being no index there was a full Contents and a good table of summary points on each airfield giving station number, aircraft, units and dates. It wasvery adequately illustrated and can be recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Father.

Have been trying to trace my American air force father with very limited information other than he was sergeant USAAF 9th airborne based within easy access to London and his name of course so your book on the positioning of these bases will help me eliminate those not suitable (with any luck which I've not had a lot of so far).
