The landing craft assault or LCA was one of the unsung heroes of the Second World War. It took part in practically every amphibious operation from Norway to Normandy and landed around 400,000 men in action conditions, plus many more in training. It was the only serviceable British landing craft at the beginning of the War, and it remained in service until the Suez operation of 1956. It landed the first waves of infantry on the British and Canadian beaches in Normandy in 1944, and Americans on the notorious Omaha Beach. Its far-sighted design of 1938 remains the basis for the landing craft of today. This is the first book devoted to this humble but essential craft. It examines its design history before the War, when amphibious operations were deeply unfashionable. It describes its design and construction with plans that will be useful to modellers and wargamers. It includes information on the role of the crew and the techniques and tactics used in landings. It gives an account of the larger ships which carried it and the life of the sailors and soldiers who travelled in it, with many vivid personal accounts. Finally, it describes its role in the many operations in which it took part, including withdrawals such as Dunkirk and the catastrophic Dieppe raid of 1942.

Interesting, learned more about amphibious landings from the past. Enjoyed seeing the different types of crafts used during the Second World War.

Lavery has written a short, concise for it's price, but informative and enjoyable book. The author traces the history and development of the Assault Landing Craft built and used by the British in WWII. (Not to be confused with the Higgins Landing Craft) and its use from 1938-1956.

Unlike their American cousins, once the British had decided on the design, few modifications were made. These boats gave good account of themselves and served in all theaters, primarily in Europe. This book has many very clear B&W photos, the line drawings, though small, are very clear and provide perspective on the boat's design. I especially enjoyed reading about the crew duties, training and experiences on these craft.

Recommended addition to your library if you have an interest in seaborne operations, landing craft, amphibious assault.

I have several of Mr. Lavery's books and he is a master of naval technology and history. These important little craft are covered in great detail in all areas but one. During their service lives these ALC/LCAs sported a wide range of colors and camouflage paint. While design, history and construction are covered in great detail it would have been nice to have some color profiles showing the various colors and markings sported during their careers. It is the only thing that keeps this and several other of his ship histories from being the best possible references.

Worth the read, as is just about anything on ships or small craft written by Brian Lavery. Since I worked for many years with an RCN veteran who crewed in LCAs and did five assault landings, this was a book that gives credit and shines a new light on this little known part of the war, and the praise for their contribution is much appreciated.

Lots of history, I'd have preferred more technical details and plans regarding the craft themselves.

Found it a very interesting only down side, was it only dealt with LCAs, was hoping it covered other versions of assault landing craft, i.e. LCM(1) and the American version, other wise a very detailed account of their build and actions. Excellent drawings throughout.
