Hitler's Spanish Legion: The Blue Division in Russia in WWII (Stackpole Military History Series) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 58 ratings

A history of the 47,000 Spanish soldiers who volunteered to fight for Hitler in Russia during World War II.

Although Spain claimed neutrality during World War II, 47,000 Spaniards volunteered to fight on behalf of the Third Reich. Known as the Blue Division, they battled the Soviets on the Eastern Front and played a key role in the pivotal siege of Leningrad. Set apart from the Wehrmacht by stark differences in culture, tactics, and command structure, these volunteers fought—many of them to the death—with courage and tenacity against strong opposition, extreme temperatures, and insufficient supplies for what they believed was their chance to secure Spain’s place in a new and changing Europe.

This book covers everything about the Spanish "volunteers" that fought in the Soviet Union, from the early political maneuverings, to the unit's formation and dispatch to Russia, it's combat while there, through to its eventual dissolution. The book is packed with details on the unit's trials and tribulations, and gives a good sense of how the Spanish soldier fought, and how he differed from his Wehrmacht counterparts. The only real ding, is that the book is rather longish, and a bit on the dry side. A good resource if you're interested in the Blue Division. Four stars.

Just got the book yesterday and just finished Chapter 5; its hard to put down! If you have a historical interest in Franco's Spanish volunteers fighting in Russia in WW2, you can't find a better source. The 2 authors' detail in names and places, complete with area maps, can't be beat. How they were respected by their German allies fighting to their flanks and their gallant reputation as close quarters fighters is consistently supported with specific facts, especially around the Leningrad front.

The WWII is plenty of unknown or little know events. The Blue Division is one of them. This book is about the blue division story and you can learn how these guys fought bravely against the red army and they got the respect of the german soldiers. Very interesting book.

This work by an academic historian blends documents of international relations with eye witness accounts of individual front line soldiers. A fascinating description of the high stakes diplomatic and political contest between Franco, Hitler, and the Allies seamlessly mixed with front line battle experiences of the soldiers of the Blue Division at war.

4.0 out of 5 stars Una lectura interesante
