Two unlikely allies must journey across a kingdom in the hopes of thwarting death itself.

All his life, Nels has wanted to be a knight of the kingdom of Avërand. Tall and strong, and with a knack for helping those in need, the people of his sleepy little village have even taken to calling him the Knight of Cobblestown.

But that was before Nels died, murdered outside his home by a mysterious figure.

Now the young hero has awoken as a ghost, invisible to all around him save one person -- his only hope for understanding what happened to him -- the kingdom's heir, Princess Tyra. At first the spoiled royal wants nothing to do with Nels, but as the mystery of his death unravels, the two find themselves linked by a secret, and an enemy who could be hiding behind any face.

Nels and Tyra have no choice but to abscond from the castle, charting a hidden world of tangled magic and forlorn phantoms. They must seek out an ancient needle with the power to mend what has been torn, and they have to move fast. Because soon Nels will disappear forever.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6–9—A quarrelsome princess and a handsome ghost connect with sorcerers, conjurors, and witches as they seek an enchanted Needle to stitch the world back together. Nels, a peasant lad seemingly dead at the hands of an evil Fabricator, must join forces with petulant Tyra, princess of Avërand, in order to restore himself to life. The mismatched pair stumble into danger, adventure, and love as they discover nothing is as it seems in their quest to preserve the kingdom. The premise behind this mythical world is creative: a great tapestry into which everything in all of the worlds is woven, supported and protected by weavers with magical skills to keep the threads from unraveling. The execution, however, is not always successful: characters with insufficient depth or backstory and dialogue that occasionally seems too modern for the world in which it is spoken. While many fantasy readers may prefer the works of Terry Pratchett and Diana Wynne Jones, there are those who will enjoy the world-building, magic, action, and trace of romance found in this novel, which leaves the door open for sequels. VERDICT An entertaining but slight fantasy for libraries with ample budgets.—Sharon Grover, Hedberg Public Library, Janesville, WI

This book has grabbed me from the beginning! It is not the ghost story I expected and I love it! In fact I think it is more fantasy than paranormal. There are ghosts/spirits, magic, witches, and sorcerers of sorts. I like the various characters ranging from the peasant and spoiled princess,to the pompous knight and the villain. The dialogue is also brilliant! Jensen and King do a fabulous job bringing the characters and this new world to life.

Woven is about Nels, a young peasant who finds himself neither dead nor alive, and the spoiled princess, Tyra, is the only person who can see him. They learn why this is and must go on a quest to find a magic needle to prevent Nels from becoming unwoven and dying. During their quest they meet up with the villain who is a Master Threader and wants Nels dead so he can have power. This story is set in a world with medieval themes like old castles, a princess, knights and kings, and a quest.

I recommend this book to those who enjoy fantasy. It is a middle grade read. I felt the plot moved along even though I wish I could have gotten to know the some of the characters better. I love Tyra, but she changed her mind and opinion a little too quickly. She is a more complex character and I would have liked to have seen her development from a spoiled and insecure princess to a confident and caring person through more challenging trials. However, for a middle grade read it worked to keep the plot moving.

The story concluded at the end, but it seems to leave room for a sequel, especially from another character's point of view. If there is a sequel I would definitely read it! I would so enjoy getting to know more of these characters! Overall a great read!

Woven is a type of book that can easily appeal to a large audience. While it may appear written for young adults, adults can casually enjoy it and the content is not so mature that kids can also pick it up. Think of the type of audience the Princess Bride would appeal to and you've likely found all the people that would like Woven.

Woven has a likable cast of characters all with distinct personality and development. The main story is light and entertaining. This is the type of book you read if you simply want to go on a fun adventure.

What I liked best about the book was the unique system of magic it uses. While some of the plot would appear predictable, the unique way in which magic was handled still inspired a sense of curiosity. In other words, you may know which direction the story is going but will still want to see how it gets there.

There's room for a sequel but not at the cost of providing a satisfactory ending. I feel the ending to Woven was nearly perfect.

I would've given this book 4.5 stars cause it's shy of 5 stars, but I'll round up because I'm hoping for its continued success and would love to read a sequel.

Quite a cheerful and wonderful adventure. I quite enjoy quests with objects mixed with magic and a touch of mystery. Not to mention the strained romance that's destined to be. An enjoyable read which had me read this one quite quickly, instead of weeks going by for me to continue a story, which has been my normal routine with books with such a busy schedule. This would be a delight for teens and young adults, though I'm not either in that age group, I still enjoyed the spirit of a good story.

Nels, known where he lives as the `Knight of Cobblestown', is always trying to lend a hand. His lifelong dream is to become a knight for the Kingdom of Avërand. After winning a wrestling match with the favored Knight of Avërand, Arek, the Princess refuses to hand over the `prize'-a kiss to the winner. When a mysterious stranger murders Nels later that evening, it turns out that Princess Tyra is the only one that can see him. Yes, young Nels comes back as a ghost. Clearly, there is unfinished business that needs to be taken care of, and that includes finding out what exactly bonds these two young people together.

I wasn't too fond of Princess Tyra at first. She was too much of a spoiled brat for my taste, compared to Nels and his chivalrous and courageous nature. He pleads with her to help him until he has no choice but to follow her around and prank her (think Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost) :D until she agrees. (Eventually she wins me over). They eventually join forces to find out exactly what happened to Nels and the evil force trying to unravel him. The quest includes searching for a magic needle that will help tie up loose ends from ties nearly severed years ago. There are many obstacles to overcome and battles they will fight.

The world building is phenomenal; there is even a map included to give the reader an idea of area locations. I love the idea that a `Tapestry' intertwines the world and everyone in it and that fate is sometimes changed by the choices made. Readers will notice many references to sewing in this book: thimbles, threads, weaving, seams, etc. The characters were well fleshed out and three-dimensional, with their own distinct personalities. The story flowed well, although it did lag slightly in the middle. I noticed no spelling or grammatical errors in this draft.

If you like stories with ghosts, sorcerers, knights, magic, witches, and spells mixed with a healthy dose of adventure, action, fantasy, and a touch of romance, then I highly recommend this novel.

I loved this book. For me it was a page-turner and a very good and smooth read! Congratulations to the authors for creating such an entertaining and thrilling world in which to tell their story. Woven is a beautiful and engaging story. The use of sewing magic was very well spun! —thank you for the beautiful moments that…sent a chill through me, for the humor that made me laugh, for the wisdom expressed and for writing a story that made me sad to turn to the final page! I hope this book is a launching point for more Woven books—there are so many stories within Woven that are bursting at the seams to be told and explained—truly a well-crafted and written story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, engaging read

Woven is an engaging, fun, and action-packed entry into the YA fantasy genre. Jensen and King have come up with an excellent premise, that we are all "woven" into the great tapestry of life - so what happens when a thread comes loose? Layers of backstory are threaded expertly throughout, and we come to see there is much more to the hero, Nels, than first meets the eye. There's a great dose of humour in this book, too. Nels becomes a ghost after being murdered by the villain of the piece, and the only one who can see him is Princess Tyra, the spoilt, entitled heir to the throne. While she isn't exactly a sympathetic character initially, I couldn't help feeling a bit sorry for her, as Nels torments her until she listens and agrees to help him get his life back.

What follows is a journey which takes many thrilling turns, as well as being a journey of growth for both characters. Nels finds he can do a lot more as a ghost than what he first thought, and Tyra sees beyond her self-interest to come to a point where she is willing to do what she can to save her unlikely friend, as well as the kingdom. There are larger forces at play than what we first thought, and the villain, Rasmus, is highly entertaining as well as being devious.

As a side note, while I wasn't familiar with either author's style beforehand, it doesn't feel like a co-authored book at all, unlike some others I have read where there was a noticeable jarring of styles. The story-telling was seamless (pardon the pun). I hope we will hear more from this team in the future!

This incredible story line – almost a fairy story, yet real and relative to life around us … an ethereal world. The characters hook us … and are brought to life, each in its unique way … and then the hidden mysteries and unravelling universes encountered … all needing to be woven together.

The threads weave personalities, landscapes, colours, thoughts from the characters, concepts to be considered … “the more Nels thought about his life, the more he wanted it back”: knowledge needs to be taken slowly. Life needs to be celebrated, appreciated encompassing all that forms it … never forgetting, taking time to appreciate it all.

A thoughtful read … deserving to be read by many.
