4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 445 ratings

Mysterious beings appear on the shores of dystopian Brooklyn in a saga blending action, suspense, and romance, by the author of the Sisters Grimm series.

Sixteen-year-old Lyric Walker’s life is forever changed when she witnesses the arrival of 30,000 Alpha, a five-nation race of ocean-dwelling warriors, on her beach in Coney Island. The world’s initial wonder and awe over the Alpha quickly turns ugly and paranoid and violent, and Lyric’s small town transforms into a military zone with humans on one side and Alpha on the other.

When Lyric is recruited to help the crown prince, a boy named Fathom, assimilate, she begins to fall for him. But their love is a dangerous one, and there are forces on both sides working to keep them apart. Only, what if the Alpha are not actually the enemy? What if they are in fact humanity’s best chance for survival?

Because the real enemy is coming. And it’s more terrifying than anything the world has ever seen.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—In his first YA novel, Buckley delivers a solidly entertaining adventure with the perfect amount of romance and danger. Lyric Walker used to be a "wild thing." At 14, she and her friends ruled the dilapidated beach community of Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY. Then one night, Lyric witnesses the arrival of the Alpha, strange creatures from the depths of the ocean, and learns a terrible secret her family has been keeping from her. Three years later, Coney Island is a police state, with the Alpha living in a containment camp on the beach, and furious protestors roam the streets. When six Alpha teenagers are forcibly integrated into the public high school, Lyric's complicated web of hidden truths threatens to unravel. In Lyric, Buckley has created a phenomenal new heroine. Smart and snarky, with rough edges and killer fashion sense, Lyric is a girl to be celebrated. Sharp political commentary and strong parallels to the treatment of minorities in the U.S. ground the world in reality, while the well-rounded and ethnically diverse supporting cast will cause readers to root for them. The climax feels a bit rushed, as revelations and plot developments quickly pile up, but the breathtaking action and cliff-hanger conclusion will leave teens desperate for more. VERDICT Give this one to fans of Suzanne Collins's "The Hunger Games" trilogy (Scholastic) searching for the next big thing.—Elisabeth Gattullo Marrocolla, Darien Library, CT

Review

Undertow overflows with innovative, terrifying monsters — human, emotional and undersea. Landmark Coney Island becomes a dystopian state where two different species battle for dominance, and Lyric Walker is both a unique, quirky heroine and a fearless crusader. Allegorical and romantic, the book nevertheless reads like an action movie with especially awesome CGI.” — E. Lockhart, author of We Were Liars and The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-BanksUndertow crashes over you in waves of emotion, allowing glimpses of family and loyalty, before dragging you into the depths of human prejudice, cultural mistrust, and political corruption. Once you resurface, you'll view the world through different eyes.” —A.G. Howard, author of the critically acclaimed Splintered Series “Undertow will unexpectedly grab hold and pull you out into a world of epic romance and gritty suspense.  A must-read tale of how love can survive under the most dangerous circumstances.  It will leave you gasping for air, and for more.” —Tonya Hurley, NYT bestselling author of the ghostgirl series and The Blessed Trilogy “A gritty, turbulent novel as sweeping and deep as the ocean itself. UNDERTOW will pull you in and hold you down.” —Rebecca Serle, author of When You Were Mine, and The Edge of Falling “Lyric is a girl’s girl—as savvy as she is soulful, as sharp as she is tender. Lyric’s fierce, distinctive voice is the core magnetic force of UNDERTOW, and why we will all be stampeding for more.” —Adele Griffin, author of All You Never Wanted and The Unfinished Life of Addison Stone * "Sharp political commentary and strong parallels to the treatment of minorities in the U.S. ground the world in reality, while the well-rounded and ethnically diverse supporting cast will cause readers to root for them...the breathtaking action and cliff-hanger conclusion will leave teens desperate for more." School Library Journal, starred review "There are some nice parallels to the civil rights movement and school integration in this novel, but the real attraction for most readers will be the romance and action, both of which are in high supply...should please readers looking supernatural romance with a bit of a twist." —VOYA "Civilization’s end is fast and furious in Michael Buckley’s Undertow. Cut your nails before reading or you will find yourself biting them off." —Campus Circle "Readers will find themselves immersed in this semi-edgy, race-against-the-clock world that's waiting to implode." —Kirkus "Buckley packs this propulsive novel with one walloping scene after another, and there's enough action, romance, and high-stakes drama to keep a wide array of readers interested." —Booklist "Buckley draws clear parallels between the vicious anti-Alpha attitudes and existing racial and ethnic prejudices...A fascinating, engaging, and tense tale, and a strong start to the series." —Publishers Weekly "A gripping story that is convincingly told, and astute readers may spot what is almost certainly some sharp political commentary about the ways our own nation has addressed "otherness" throughout our tumultuous history." —Bulletin

I got the audiobook as part of a special and figured it would be something for background noise while working, but I was wrong.

THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC. The author had done an amazing job creating the characters and setting up a brilliant storyline and makes it all seem believable.

This book had me laughing, close to tears on some parts, and COMPLETELY LIVID in others. He really knows how to write a bad guy! It is not a joke to say that I was so angered at one particular bad guy, looking at you Governor Bachman, that I was shaking.

I ended up buying all three books and audiobook companions.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I loved “Undertow” by Michael Buckley. Parts of this book reminded me a lot of the tv show that played on CW “Starcrossed.” Instead of Aliens, we are faced with some sort of fish creatures called the Alpha. Everything has changed in Coney Island.

Lyric Walker is a 16-year-old girl who used to be a wild child. She used to get herself into all kind of trouble but for the last several years she has just been lying low. She shows up to school when she is supposed too and she keeps her head down low. The last thing Lyric walker wants to do is cause any trouble.

Now it is the first day of school that everyone has been waiting for. There are protesters lining the streets because today is the day that six Alpha will join the school with the human kids. No one likes this idea, but the government is wanting to try to see what happens. Lyric goes to school like she is supposed too and well a fight breaks out in one of her classes. Instead of letting the students keep on fighting each other Lyric steps in to try to stop the fight, resulting in everyone getting into trouble.

Then the principal, Doyle, tells Lyric that she is going to help him with a special project or he will put her in lock up. Come to find out this special project is for her to meet with Fathom, the prince of the Alpha, every day to help him learn the ways of humans. Of course Lyric objected but she ended up having to do it anyway. Lyric starts teaching Fathom an even though she is reluctant about it she starts to enjoy their little visits. Everything in Coney Island is about to change and humans aren’t ready for it.

I really liked Lyric Walker’s character. Lyric used to be this extremely selfish girl and now she is obeying her parents and lying low to protect her family. She also knows when to stick up for others because it isn’t fair for them to be treated badly. A lot of people call Lyric names and she still holds her head high. She still does her assignment and she still tries to find a way to protect her family including her friends. Life isn’t easy for Lyric but she is willing to do the best that she can do.

I really liked this story because it kept me engrossed the entire time. I listened to the audio-book and I think that Jennifer Grace did a fantastic job of narrating. I think she does a great job of telling the story because she puts so much heart into the story. I love that she does voices and she makes the reader feel like they are a part of the story not just listening to it. This is the first book that I have read by Michael Buckley and I really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to reading book two of the “Undertow” trilogy.

I'll be honest and say that what made me buy this book was the cover. Shallow, I know, but I'm so happy I picked up this book. The story was engaging, action-packed and even had a little romance. The book revolves around sixteen-year-old Lyric Walker. She's harboring a dangerous secret that could get her family killed. Blackmailed, she has to help teach the Alpha prince about humans. The Alpha are a different race of men and women from the sea, but they're not the worst ones. There is another race of sea creatures that have hunted the Alpha to almost extinction. However, there are the usual crackpots, human activist who wish to kill the Alpha as well. Like I said, it's very action-packed. I am anxiously waiting for the second book in the trilogy.

Amazing! Very suspenseful and exciting.Tons of twists and turns. First, you are trying to figure out what is the danger in the book. Then, you realize there's a connection with the main character and a Romeo and Juliet style romance. But the plots keeps thickening to where unexpected important events occur. I had bought this book because I won the second book, Raging sea, in a Goodreads giveaway. After reading the first book, I immediately bought the last book.

This book does a lot of things well: describing the prejudice and tensions in the community, the action scenes, and its pure creativeness of plot. I liked Lyric and her best friend Bex a lot, as well. While the protestors and other antagonists sometimes felt cliche, I thought the correlation between the Alpha/human conflict and racial and immigration conflicts in our world was well done.

Where I thought the book could have improved was the romance. I never really felt it. The relationship between Lyric and Fathom escalated really quickly, especially when they started off so rocky.

That being said, I tore through this one pretty quickly. It has a lot going for it, and I think a lot of people will like it. It has almost a post-apocalyptic feel with the "Zone" setting, but instead of zombies, there are mermaids.

I got the hardcover version and I love it! Finished the book in a day because I couldn’t put it down. The characters are great, the plot is interesting, and the book itself came in great condition.

One of the reasons that I enjoyed under to by Michael Buckley was because it has a very interesting premise about sea creatures: mermaids, sirens, and sea monsters that call themselves the Alpha. They appear in America and the story begins as the Alpha are assimilated into high school. Undertow has an excellent depth of character for each individual in the story. The characters are good, bad and wicked. They all combine into a wonderful story of Lyric Walker, who finds love with the Alpha prince Fathom. It Is interesting About the sunning is a Coney Island carnival because the story is definitely a rollercoaster ride . I enjoyed being pulled into the Undertow world.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Intoxicating Urban-Fantasy!
Reviewed in Canada on May 15, 2015
"Undertow" with its underlying theme of racism and resulting violence is a blend of urban-fantasy and romance with a high level of suspense and intrigue that takes place on Coney Island after the arrival of a race of ocean dwellers -Alphas - have made their home on the beach. The government tries to integrate the new species into human society with the assimilation of some of their young people into John F. Hylan High School but the plan fosters a dangerous atmosphere when the small town's rebellion creeps into the school infecting the students.

To try and assuage the problem sixteen year old Lyric Walker is recruited to help Fathom, the Titon prince assimilate into the school, only to become infatuated with the young warrior. But, with Lyric's background and the mounting violence and tension in the community any hope of having a relationship is undermined, especially when she discovers he already has a girlfriend.

The imaginative plot is set on Coney Island which has become a military zone when thirty thousand Alphas take up resident in a tent city on the beach. Their nonhuman appearance, strange abilities and warrior lifestyle breeds paranoia, prejudice and violence in the community creating a dangerous landscape that could ignite easily as the aggression of locals begins to ramp up.

The plot, reminiscent of the television program "Star-Crossed" is fast-paced and action-packed with each confrontation, and war looms with a vicious new enemy intent on destroying both societies. Emotionally-charged and exciting the story grips the reader as Lyric struggles not only to become the person she's destined to be, but to rationalize her feelings for a prince who's forbidden. Cleverly Michael Buckley escalates the intensity and suspense with not only military action, the heightened radicalism of Governor Bachman, but with a new enemy more lethal and threatening than anyone could have imagined. Even the explosive climax keeps the reader on the edge of their seat and begs for another chapter in this captivating tale.

The story is rich in unforgettable and complex characters that add passion, energy and realism to the drama. Lyric Walker born of Alpha blood, but without the speed and strength keeps a low profile hoping to escape the military zone with her mother, father and best friend Bex . She's reckless, impulsive at times but her commonsense and determination keep her grounded even when hanging out with bad-boy, mean-spirited and cocky Gabriel Bowen. In contrast Bex Conrad plagued by abuse at home is a broken teen who's saved only by Lyric's loyalty and Shadow's love. Tito (Shadow) Ramirez, Bex's loving protector is kind, amiable and talented unlike the Alpha crown prince who's moody, stubborn and defiant. Fathom is a skilled and dangerous warrior who's obedient to his prime until faced with killing the young woman he loves.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Undertow" which is imaginative and gritty; the conflict between races and the forbidden romance between Lyric and Fathom intoxicating. I look forward to the next book in this riveting series.
