County Class Cruisers Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

“A detailed look at British 10,000-ton Treaty Cruisers. “A gem of research by the author, covering the design and progressive improvements to each ship.”—Malcolm Wright, author of British and Commonwealth Warship Camouflage of WWII

The ShipCraft series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeler through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sisterships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring color profiles and highly detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modeling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites.

This volume covers the British 10,000-ton Treaty Cruisers, thirteen of which were built to three slightly varying designs between the wars. With three funnels and a high freeboard, they were impressive ships, and all enjoyed very active wartime careers—three were involved in the
Bismarck action and another with the sinking of the Scharnhorst.

“This book by Les Brown is rather like the Sci-Fi ‘Tardis’ in that its outside belies the tremendous amount on the inside.”—Malcolm Wright, author of
British and Commonwealth Warship Camouflage of WWII

Great book, but can hardly be considered an in depth review in the traditional sense, but contains the most appropriate information. But this book is of great value for model builder and providing the more than just basic information about the class. Great color side views drawings of the cruisers. I would definitely recommend this book for those who don't have the need to know how many rivets were used etc :-)

Very useful treatment of this important class of RN and RAN cruisers. Indispensable to the modeler. I love these books.

Period photos, a fairly complete basic history of these 13 ships in 3 subclasses, a listing & pictures of most available models & accessories, color profiles, & more is what you get on 64 pages of stout glossy paper. Not being much of a ship modeler, I can still appreciate the work involved as well as the very nicely done finished products shown here.

    5.0 out of 5 stars 英国1万トン級重巡洋艦の参考書
Reviewed in Japan on February 10, 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent reference
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 29, 2012
Having used the excellent Shipcraft Special on Corvettes for my 6 month build of HMCS Snowberry I was keen to see what others in the series would offer re better references/alternatives for the Airfix Suffolk. Not at all disappointed as the overall style and content is excellent for a number of County cruisers, and not only fills a gap in my knowledge but gives good references for the different paint schemes used, mostly both port & starboard views. Particularly the China Station colour schemes helped work out what I always thought were errors in the Airfix instructions for the Suffolk. Very good text and excellent material to work from. I was particularly delighted to find info re the 1200 scale Eaglewall kits of the Dorsetshire and Norfolk as my brother had these in the dim and distant past, (1960's), and I had been trying to recall who the manufacturer was. Heartily recommend the book as informative and excellent for modelling reference purposes. Well written and superb drawings/photos throughout. Top notch and inspiring !

5.0 out of 5 stars Shipcraft 19 - County Class Cruisers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 9, 2013
Clear text and interesting history of the class with good selection of photographs of the actual ships, and modellers' representations of them. All in all, an invaluable resource for the active and armchair model-builder.
