The Great War Illustrated - 1914: Archive and Colour Photographs of WWI Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 36 ratings

“An excellent history . . . Over 1,000 black-and-white photos, and 100 color photos, tell the story of [WWI’s] first year in intimate and immediate detail.” —San Francisco Book Review

This is the first volume in a series of five books covering each year of the First World War graphically. Countless thousands of pictures were taken by photographers on all sides during the war. These pictures appeared in the magazines, journals, and newspapers of the time. Some illustrations went on to become part of postwar archives and have appeared, and continue to appear, in present-day publications and TV documentary programs.
The Great War Illustrated 1914 includes many rarely seen images with individual numbers allocated; subsequently they will be lodged with the Taylor Library Archive for use by editors and authors.

The 1914 volume covers the outbreak of hostilities, the early battles, the war at sea, and the forming of the great trench line stretching from the coast to the Swiss border, and ends with the Christmas truce. Some images will be familiar—and many will be seen for the first time by a new generation interested in the months that changed the world forever.

Most pictures were from behind the lines. There’s no real battle scenes but good pictures of weapons. It was worth buying.

This was the first of 5 WW1 photographic history 'tomes'
that I got. Very good. Good show!

I started out by just buying the 1914 book to see if these were worth the money before I invested in the whole collection. I was actually surprised that it was better than I expected. I now plan to buy the remaining volumes too.

I'm a fan of Pen and Sword's books, and this one doesn't disappoint. It's filled to the brim with a huge and terrific selection of photos, in both color and black & white. This is the first of five books about WWI (year-by-year) and it promises to be a great series.

I like looking at the faces of the soldiers now over 100 years old. Also the equipment and condition of the battlefield of 1914.

I think the paper book version may be worth a try. For me it seems the pictures are not too clear and I needed to enlarge them frequently. I’d be curious how the paper book form differs.

I read/viewed the book cover to cover, but I can suggest also using the book as a reference to get a sense of the areas, or action when one studies certain parts of the 1914 campaign.

They say "a picture a worth a thousand words" and this book certainly delivers on that score. The book is a great companion to support the enormous amount of books being released to mark the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the Great War; and additional volumes will be produced to mark each additional year of the war.
Possibly not for the casual reader and certainly does not attempt to provide much in the way of an overview of the War's progression. What it does very well is to put a human face to the conflict and will add much to any text heavy history of the conflict.
Recommended.

This the first book of a series that, I hope, will be a great visual record of the Great War. This Volume is an excellent start including many that I have not seen before.
