Armoured Warfare and the Fall of France 1940 (Images of War) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 32 ratings

A visual account of the fall of France during World War II, featuring images of tanks and other armoured vehicles used by belligerents.

At 21:00 on 9 May 1940, Codeword Danzig was issued alerting Adolf Hitler’s airborne troops that they were about to spearhead an attack on Belgium and the Netherlands. The following day his blitzkrieg rolled forward striking the British Expeditionary Force and the French armies in Belgium and in northern France at Sedan.

The desperate attempts of the allied armies to stem the Nazi tide proved futile and, once their reserves had been exhausted and the remaining forces cut off, Paris lay open. By early June, it was all over—trapped British, Belgian and French troops were forced to evacuate Dunkirk, Calais and Boulogne and the defeated French army agreed to an armistice leaving the country divided in two.

This dramatic story is shown in a sequence of over 150 historic photographs that Anthony Tucker-Jones he has selected for this memorable book. The images he has chosen cover every aspect of this extraordinary campaign, but his main focus is on the vital role played by the armoured fighting vehicles of both sides. The book is a graphic record of the destruction wrought by the Wehrmacht’s lightning offensive through the Low Countries and France.

Armoured Warfare and the Fall of France is so-so. It would might an okay addition to a WWII library, but it’s by no means a must-have. There are two main issues with the book. First it tries to cover too much and doesn’t really focus on the Battle for France. The first 48% of the book (as measured by my Kindle Fire) is introductory stuff—mostly images and descriptions of different German and Allied equipment. If you’ve never studied WWII before, it might (and I stress might) be useful. If you are familiar with WWII equipment it's brief to the point of being useless. The second issue is that once we finally make it to the Battle of France, the images selected are of relatively poor quality. Overall, they are fine. Some are even very good. Most, however, are meh. This is unfortunate because there are lots and lots and lots of photos of wrecked Allied equipment from this period of the war. The book could have done a better job of getting better quality/more interesting shots and synthesizing them in a more comprehensive fashion. Other books in the Images of War series, including some by the same author, are much better. If you are specifically interested in the Battle for France and the Low Countries you should certainly pick this book up. Don’t expect too much from it, though.

With a vast library of books dedicated to World War Two, a picture book needs no compressed narrative text. Fall Gelb is a library on it's own!
Not all pictures are rare! If you make captions, let them be accurate. The S35 turret was NOT a one person turret, but a one and half; turret ring (APX 1CE) being wider than Char B1 bis (APX 1)! There was no Polish cavalry bluntly attacking panzers; they had Bofors 37mm AT guns! The dispersed deployment of France tanks was not tactically unsound; all myths!
If you can't see the difference between a 25mm Hotchkiss AT gun- and 47mm gun shield, don't guess, just keep your mouth shut. The Dutch army didn't capitulate on may 15; starting May 10, 5 day's fighting means May 14! They didn't rest on Sunday!
Apart from these errors, it's a nice collection, particularly France and British materiel, witch is more rare than German. The pictures of the Dutch army a for from rare. Editor advice would/should have been helpful.
Attractive cover, but I prefer gloss paper for photo's. All in all, it's acceptable documentation.

I did like this book, it was good insight into the start of the war in Europe and the French Campaign. This book provided pretty good detail about the armour used by the Germans, French and British forces early in the war. The equipment at the start of the war in Europe was certainly different from what would be used two to three years later. The pictures were great, many I had never seen before and alone made the book well worth the price. I would have liked accounts from the soldiers (or unit battle diaries) who used these tanks during the French Campaign to hear first hand how these tanks performed in battle conditions, what were the strengths, what weakness did they experience while serving with them. This book showcase the preparedness of the French, English, Dutch and Belgian forces, during those times the allies could think that everything was against them, whereas the Germans thought of complete victory at all levels!!!!, great photographic history of the one side conflict in Western Europe, it is a good read to transport the reader of the events that lead the Fall of France.

Mediocre publication typical of this fast food series. A waste of money. It deserves 0 stars. You can actually do better searching for photos on the web. They will be larger and clearer.

Following the excelent pattern set by the other books in the Images of War series, it is a shame that the quality of the paper used in the book is not up to standards. The interesting photos look dull and out of focus.
