The Washingtons. Volume 3: Royal Descents of the Presidential Branch (The Washingtons: A Family History) Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

This Royal Descents supplement is an outgrowth of the author’s multi-volume family history of the “Presidential Branch” of the Washingtons. That work collects the descendants of the immigrant John Washington who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and became the great-grandfather of President George Washington. The Royal Descents traces the ancestry of the early Virginia members of this “Presidential Branch” back in time to the aristocracy and nobility of England and continental Europe, including the Plantagenet dynasty, William the Conqueror, Alfred the Great, Charles Martel, and Charlemagne. ADVANCE PRAISE for The Washingtons: A Family History “I am convinced that your work will be of wide interest to historians and academics as well as members of the Washington family itself. Although the surname Washington is perhaps the best known in American history and much has been written about the Washington family for well over a century, it is surprising that no comprehensive family history has been published. Justin M. Glenn’s The Washingtons: A Family History finally fills this void for the branch to which General and President George Washington belonged, identifying some 63,000 descendants. This is truly a family history, not a mere tabulation of names and dates, providing biographical accounts of many of the descendants of John Washington who settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in 1657. . . . Each individual section is followed by extensive listings of published and manuscript sources supporting the information presented and errors of identification in previous publications are commented upon as appropriate.” John Frederick Dorman, editor of The Virginia Genealogist (1957-2006) and author of Adventurers of Purse and Person “Decades of reviewing Civil War books have left me surprised and delighted when someone applies exhaustive diligence to a topic not readily accessible. Dr. Glenn surely meets that standard with the meticulous research that unveils the Washington family in gratifying detail—many of them Confederates of interest and importance.” Robert K. Krick, author of The Smoothbore Volley that Doomed the Confederacy and Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain

Justin Matthews Glenn was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and raised in Glendale and Phoenix, Arizona. He graduated from Stanford University [B.A., Classics, 1967; magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa] and was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Princeton University [M.A., Classics, 1969; Ph.D., Classics, 1970]. He was a professor of Classics at the University of Georgia and Florida State University for 35 years, and he has published 70 articles, notes, and reviews in his field. His fascination with American history was kindled as a young boy when he first held a treasured family heirloom, the pistol his great-grandfather had carried as a Confederate captain.

In 1974 he discovered his genealogical connection to the Washington family. About that same time, without realizing it at first, he began researching his book "The Washingtons: A Family History." Initially he set out to collect as many cousins as he could—descendants of his ancestor Nathaniel Pope, whose daughter Anne married the immigrant John Washington and became the great-grandmother of President George Washington. In 1992 Glenn made contact with John Augustine Washington, the leading authority on the Washington family and later Genealogist of The National Society of the Washington Family Descendants. John generously provided invaluable help and guidance, along with exclusive publishing rights to draw freely from his voluminous unpublished files on the Washingtons.

Eventually Glenn collected over 63,000 direct descendants of the immigrant John Washington. A true family history and not simply a bare bones genealogy, his book incorporates over 1,200 detailed biographical sketches. This comprehensive history is being published initially in a nine-volume Kindle edition by Savas Beatie. A hardcover edition eventually will appear in nine volumes plus a one volume General Index, with four of the volumes being published in two parts. Volumes one and two form a set, with a cumulative bibliography at the end of volume two. The other volumes have individual bibliographies. "The Washingtons" includes the time-honored but now controversial John Wright line, which recently has been challenged largely on the basis of DNA evidence.

Now retired, Glenn resides with his wife Jody in Tallahassee, Florida. Since 2002 he has served as Registrar General of The National Society of the Washington Family Descendants.

Justin Glenn, PhD (2014). Washington: A family history. Savas Publishing: El Dorado Hills, CA [Kindle ebook]

For anyone interested in the family of George Washington, I highly recommend this series. To be published in eight volumes, Dr. Glenn's research covers the genealogy of George Washington from the first ancestor (the immigrant John Washington) to set foot in the colonies, down through fifteen generations, covering some 63,000 descendants. More than just a genealogy, the volumes include numerous family member biographies. It is well researched and sourced. While individuals are listed in descendent order (some volumes are in ascending order because of the content), the volumes are interspersed with numerous biographies of individuals and often their spouses. I have found Dr. Glenn's writing style engaging and easy to read.

Dr. Glenn has spent more than 40 years researching the Washington and allied families and, since 2002 has been the Registrar General of the National Society of the Washington Family Descendants. I have corresponded with Dr. Glenn over the last several years as he was finishing his research, both to clarify some inconsistencies that I had found and to provide updated information on my Windsor/Casey branch where his research had left off (I am a second cousin, eight times removed of President George Washington). I have at all times found him to be easily accessible, invaluably helpful (as these volumes will attest), and both honest and forthright where inconsistencies or lack of documentation left room for speculation. (An excellent example is his research and conclusions regarding which "John Wrights" were related to the presidential branch. This was particularly of interest to me because three John Wright individuals are my 5th, 6th, and 7th great grandfather, respectively.)

Over the last several months, three of the eight volumes have been published:

Volume 1: Seven generations of the presidential branch. This volume begins with Lawrence Washington in England and traces his son, John Washington's immigration to Virginia Colony, and family offspring down through seven generations. Of particular interest to me, this volume includes as a member of the seventh generation, Nancy Louisa Windsor, my 2nd great grandmother. She and two of her sisters would marry Casey brothers.

Volume 2: Notable members of the presidential branch. This volume is a presentation of a number of famous or influential people in the presidential branch that Dr. Glenn happened upon in his research. Individuals include people ranging from actor Lee Marvin, to blues great Johnny Winter, to Major General George S. Patton III.

Volume 3: Royal descents of the presidential branch. This volume traces a number of European royal and aristocratic lineages that link to the presidential branch. Since royal families tended to interbreed, the lineage is extensive beginning with the Saxon chieftain Cerdic in the mid-400s, and includes Alfred the Great; St. Margaret, Queen of Scots; and Henry I, II, and III; Pippin I, II, and III, and Charlemagne, to name a few.

If you like history and genealogy, or if you are researching families that may intersect with the Washington line, I highly recommend this series. I will review other volumes as they are published.

This informative and well-researched book documents the descent of the Washingtons in America from England's royalty, for example, Col. John Washington's descent from the Kings of Wessex. There are no unfounded claims here; everything is proven and evidenced. Readers will enjoy American and European history, and if they are descended from the Washington family, will learn fascinating things about their ancestry. This book, and indeed the entire Washington series by Dr. Justin Glenn, is a superbly written and researched masterpiece.

Having now read Vols. 1, 2 and 3 I am in awe of Dr. Glenn both for having the dedication to produce it and of the entire Washington family. It is fascinating to realize that the ancestry of our first President had its beginnings, as far as it is able to be documented, in the 5th century. Here, 1,600 years later, a very readable, interesting and, more importantly, accurate saga of the ancestry of our first and, by far, best President. We've all been bored in school hearing about Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, the Plantagenet family and other notables of the distant pass. You will not be bored raeding this book,

Any serious student of histroy should read Dr. Glenn's work.

Fantastic work presented in a easy and pleasant to read format with a complete set of references. Everything seems to check out for accuracy as the first two volumes did. My first experience with a Kindle presentation and I'm liking it more and more with each volume of this series. Excellent presentation of this material in a style that is easy to read yet is fully referenced as to sources to document the facts being presented . Glad that I didn't wait for the traditional paper versions. I'm really enjoying the first three volumes and am looking forward to the upcoming additions.

An informative and enjoyable read for genealogists and those interested in the forebears of George Washington and his family. Professor Glenn has collected the data, and then presented it in very readable form. Significant historical figures are profiled in excellent short biographies. The reader can draw his/her own conclusions on whether George Washington shares traits with his ancestors or whether it is ironical that they are connected at all! American colonists, including the Washingtons, literally distanced themselves from the homeland, ultimately breaking with a long monarchial tradition. This volume lays out clearly what that tradition was, on a personal level, through documented lines of descent.

Another amazing research chronicle from Dr. Justin Glenn! After purchasing Vol 7 which includes my husband's family descent from his Washington forbear, I bought Vol. 3 to establish the early Washington history. I find myself going back to this volume again and again as I view historical dramas or have geneaological questions. Such interesting stories from the past that truly inform the present! A clearly and beautifully constructed history which should be in every library!

Justin Glenn’s research and books have helped me delve into my ancestry. It is wonderful to see a scholar undertake such a complicated genealogical project, while utilizing and acknowledging the research of many. It is an inspiring effort and a service to the generations of families linked to this work. Brenda Durham Bushey

Finally all the bragging I have been doing has been shown to simply be the truth. This is a great addition to Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. I am sure that Vol. 4 will be equally as good. I do not believe that there has ever been a family history as well documented or as complete as Dr. Glenn's history of the Washington Family.
