Modern American Snipers: From The Legend to The Reaper—on the Battlefield with Special Operations Snipers Kindle Edition
An inside look at today's special operations sniper and an in depth look at the career of Chris Kyle from those who knew him and fought alongside him.
Most people think of snipers as shooters perched in urban hides, dealing out death unseen from a considerable distance. But this description barely scratches the surface. Special operations snipers are men with stacked skill sets who have the ability to turn the tide of battles, even when they aren't pulling the trigger. Snipers have played an outsized role in the War on Terror that has earned them the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, and countless other honors. These are the most experienced warriors on the battlefield, oftentimes the units' best assaulters with years of door-kicking under their belt. These are the men who run ops in small teams across borders, or dress like locals and pull off high-risk vehicle reconnaissance and singleton missions in non-permissive environments.
Chris Martin's Modern American Snipers tells the inside story of some of the most heroic patriots in recent American history by the friends and colleagues who knew them best, including:
* The Legend - Chris Kyle, SEAL Team 3 Chief and the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history
* The Reaper - Nick Irving, the first African American to serve as a sniper in the 3rd Ranger Battalion, and its deadliest, with 33 confirmed kills
* Robert Horrigan, Delta sniper who played a critical role in Operation Anaconda
* Don Hollenbaugh, Delta Operator who earned the Distinguished Service Cross while embedded with a Marine platoon in the First Battle of Fallujah
* And many more

Review
“Readers…will want to check out this book. It goes beyond typical notions about snipers ― lethal combatants concealed far from their targets ― to show them as experienced, often-decorated combat leaders conducting high-risk missions.” ―Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
“An intriguing look into a necessarily secretive part of the U.S. military.” ―The Gazette
“A fascinating look at the contemporary training and warfare challenges faced by today's military sharpshooters.” ―New York Daily News
“Written in a fast-paced rat-a-tat-tat style that makes it a snappy read, but also highly informative, with enough technological information to interest aficionados, and enough story to keep a novice reading and following along with all the jargon. A fascinating exploration into the world of elite military operatives.” ―San Francisco Book Review
“Special-operations snipers are responsible for "the most outrageously disproportionate contributions of any troops throughout the Global War on Terror," and the SOFREP.com writer tries to make his case in this compendium of special-forces stars.” ―Military Times
“A 'must' for any who would understand the history, individual sniper actions, and the overall presence and effects of sniper forces on the field.” ―Midwest Book Review

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2015There are a few single words in the English language you could use to describe this book, the stories of heroism, and insights into the murky world of special operations...I'll just choose one:
FANTASTIC!
Just like his other open source "guides" to DEVGRU and Delta Force, Martin's Modern American Snipers delivers the goods...continually.
This book paints a little more graphic picture of Delta's recce squads of Advanced Assaulters and DEVGRU's black team snipers...not to mention the Ranger Regiment's incredible contributions to GWOT (even snippets regarding the Ranger Reconnaissance Regiment), MARSOC, and the ODA's among a HOST of others.
Not to be overlooked, Webb, Murphy, Davis, Irving and the others at SOFREP should be commended as well for their matter-of-fact candor regarding the units, the missions and the men.
As far as recommendations, saying "read this" is simply not enough.
If there is only one fact based wartime novel you read this year - or in your lifetime - MAKE IT THIS ONE!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2015Very good read. Though the title is a bit misleading as it discusses the politics and efforts of ST6, Delta, and 3/75 Rangers more than actual stories of snipers. Not really a bad thing, just unexpected. I would not recommend this as the first military book for people to read as it contains a lot of military jargon the neophyte may not understand making for a difficult read. It's very well written, with great stories and interviews from well known SEALs and Delta team members. If you're a military enthusiast this is a must read and addition to your library.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2015With the recent bright-light media attention on the personalities and exploits of snipers and sniping in general, there has been confusion and disagreement about the ethics and value of this instrument in our militaries bag of tools. The author gives the reader a unique and valuable "behind the scope" perspective into the lives of those men who repeatedly go into harms way to protect their brothers and sisters in arms. You will read riveting accounts of battles won and lost, and more importantly lives saved because of the skill and dedication of having the right man in the right place at the right time.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2015For those readers that like military history and special operations this book will get into an area that has had very little written about and that's the sniper. What many people do not realize is that Snipers are a necessary position on the battlefield from ancient times of knights and kings Archers to the modern sniper. They are not blood thirsty assassins like Mr Moore would have you believe. They in fact keep the foot soldiers safe from a distance where they can see the area that the soldiers are operating in and can eliminate any threats to friendly soldiers that they might not be able to see from there positions.
If you have never read about snipers this is a good place to start. Or if you have read other books about snipers this book is still a great read since it goes into more detail than some other books.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2015I think the only word that I can correctly describe this book is OUT*******STANDING!!!!! I have read about every book that has been both recently published and ones that have been around a while on force recon, the navy seals and the green berets, including ST6 and "the UNIT". This book covers everything concerning these groups and more. It isn't just about snipers and their trade(s), it also informs the reader about the rivalry between the special operators, including interviews with former operators. The book covers missions that never made the news and informs the readers on decisions made by higher ups that put these guys in harms way and tells how certain leaders made sure that their "BOYS" were the first to be called on "Tier 1" missions, excluding the other guys who were 'chomping at the bit" hoping to get chosen.
The book offers rare insight to the world of sniping, but doesn't get so technical that the average person would get lost and confused .
The author , Chris Martin, definitely qualifies to write this book. Lets just say that it's "in his blood"... He also has great help from Brandon Webb and other former operators like Jack Murphy, Howard Wasdin, the infamous "Drago", etc......
You won't want to put this book down once you start reading it and it is so current in todays events that it mentions ISIS and the trouble that group has caused.
Buy the book, you will see what I mean.....
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2016Modern American Snipers is worth the read, this book covers all the well know snipers plus some not to well know snipers, just because they have not written a book on themselves. Over all good that covers the different types of training that each services goes through for their own sniper courses and the actual deployments is also covered in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many operations are covered from the different services and very detailed training course and unit organization is covered as well. Great book on this subject
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2015This book is a very well written book that puts a light on the high stress world of our special operations forces and in particular, it's snipers. It is a very honest assessment of each service's strengths and weaknesses as well as what has been done to make them all better in a world where the enemy is no longer a State but rather, at times, a dirty and ragged bunch of well trained fighters sponsored not by a country but rather religious and personal ideologies.
I recommend this to anyone interested in the world of a sniper. As a former sniper I found it a solid read.
